Notes / Commercial Description:
A California collaboration blend of dry-hopped IPA and barrel-aged IPA
FIRST RELEASE: December 7, 2015
For many, California is considered an epicenter for brewing innovation, particularly where hoppy IPAs are concerned. We teamed up with longtime craft compatriots and mutual hop admirers Sierra Nevada to create a truly one-of-a-kind IPA. This special-edition beer conveys the true character of collaboration with touches of inventiveness and creativity. Two batches of an IPA were brewed and expertly blended to craft this multilayered beer. The first batch was split down the middle, with 50% being aged in gin-infused bourbon barrels and the remaining half aged in rye whiskey barrels. These beers were blended with the fresh second batch of IPA, which was generously dry-hopped to impart rich aromas to accompany the citrusy, piney, woody, herbaceous flavors achieved from this truly one-of-a-kind collaboration.

Bought a case of 12/22-ounce bottles (sharing with friends).
Poured into my favorite wide tulip glass.

A: Crystal-clear, light copper color; short-lived, thin head. Minimal "smears" of lacing.

S: Tart, with floral and smoky notes. Not distinctly "hoppy", although I know this stuff is teeming with hops.
I can smell Bourbon, but I wouldn't necessarily have guessed it was Bourbon if I didn't already know. Not unpleasant, but hard to pinpoint what I'm smelling, exactly. Hints of caramel malt, but the tartness really prevails.

T: Smooth and a bit astringent. Tartness prevails once again; lemon rind, tangerine, ripe grapefruit.
Not much variance in flavor as the beer warms, but some booziness/Bourbon warmth and a bit of burnt-sugar sweetness do come through.

F: Not aggressively carbonated at all. Smooth mouthfeel...kind of like a fine whiskey. Aftertaste is slightly bitter, sticky. Very nice, but I would have preferred more crispness

O: Definitely one for IPA lovers; double that for fans of Stone and Sierra Nevada. Bourbon-Barrel fans might be slightly disappointed (the Bourbon is in the Back Seat).
Nonetheless, a fine offering--and an interesting experiment--from Stone and Sierra Nevada.

Bomber dated 11/22/15 into a tulip at fridge temp.

Look: yellow tinged with burnt-orange, little head.

Smell: not getting much, honestly; tropical fruit, maybe a hint of vanilla/oak.

Taste: very similar to Enjoy By, with hints of gin and bourbon that may just be power of suggestion.

Feel: medium, slick, a bit dry.

Overall: a good beer; I'd hoped for a bit more deviation from Enjoy By, and a bit more evidence of SN's involvement, so in that sense, it's a disappointment. Won't stop me from picking up another bottle or two.

Exactly what you would expect from two of the most revered and quality breweries out there. Not sure that I get any of the barrel character in the taste but it doesn't matter. Huge hop aroma and flavor dominate this beer.

Oak is prominent, hops at the end. Foam is super cool with nice lacing.
Overall, not bad, but I was expecting more. Other reviews here seem meh. I hope this doesn't discourage these two titans from co-opting again.

The beer was a gold color with a small white head. There was a tiny bit of lace.
Aroma of pine and citrus. There was a whiff of garlic.
It tasted better than the aroma implied. Strong pine, moderate grapefruit. Some gin.
A little bit too much pine for me, but still a nice beer.

Bomber bottle, bottled 11/22/15, procured at Bev World Peekskill, NY

Pours near clear, typical almond amber, under ann off white cap, and leaving nice looking fine and quite high sheeting.

Earthy and smoky, hopped up nose...yum

Big and bold, hops, smoke, wood, complex and delicious.

Go get some and enjoy this fine creation...

Pours a clear orange color with just under a fingers worth of head. The smell is all hops. You get floral, pine, and citrus all in the nose. The taste is all pine up front with very little floral or citrus flavors involved and that flavor lingers on the tongue for a while. There is a medium feel with carbonation being very present. This is a very good IPA by two of the best in the business. I can gather a little bit from the barrel aging but over all this is a huge hop bomb.

while I found the smell to be a bit lacking, the flavor is dead on. the mixture of barrel aged goodness and fresh hop brightness make this a very good beer. I almost wish the abv was a bit lower, so I could drink more in a single sitting.

Gold to copper in color with vibrant carbonation bubbles erupting from within. There's an inch of densely packed lightly tan head that did not hold up for too long. Heavy lacing. The aroma is of piney hops, spicy rye, and juniper. The taste is complex, which the multiple spirits barrel aging referenced on the bottle would imply. Piney hops dominate, but there's also that spicy, earthy rye note and a bit of a harsher, aggressive alcoholic note from the gin infused barrels. The mouth is resinous, sticky, and chewy.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a deep amber with a moderate amount of bubbles. Slight finger of off white head which settles into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: A very juicy and earthy hop forward aroma with a scent of citrus, grass, and barrel hints. Citrus hops with ripe hints of orange peel, grapefruit, pineapple, tangerine, and peach. Earthy hop hints of grass and pine resin. Solid barrel presence comes through with hints of rye whiskey, gin, oak, wood, and vanilla. Subtle malt hints of caramel, grains, and yeast. A very good aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a pretty juicy and earthy hop driven IPA taste with notes of citrus, grass, and barrel. Upfront citrus hop notes of grapefruit, orange peel, tangerine, pineapple, peach, and lemon. Earthy hop notes of grass and pine. Barrel presence isn't huge but there are some noticeable notes of rye, oak, gin, vanilla, and wood. Background malt notes of caramel, grains, and yeast. A pretty good complex taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Juicy, oily, and drying on the finish.

Overall: A pretty good twist on an Imperial West Coast IPA. The barrel flavors are quite noticeable but they blend in well with the juicy hops.
