The coffee notes in Stone Americano Stout are bold, rich and full of American swagger. For each 120-barrel batch, we incorporated over 250 lbs. of artisanal espresso-roast beans into the mash and added in Columbus, Chinook, Amarillo and Cascade hops to invigorate the coffee taste with a slight citrus and resin hop presence. When it came time to selecting our coffee, we chose the same local roasters who contributed to our sought-after 2013 Stone ESPRESSO Imperial Russian Stout. Their fantastic beans helped us achieve this dark, hoppy and wonderfully aromatic espresso stout.

Bottle from Belmont Station.

A very dark brown with a dense, light brown head that falls off to a ring leaving little lacing, this looks solid. The nose is a delicious blend of dark roasted coffee and a nice citrus and pine hop character. The hops amplify the fruitiness of the espresso, which is dark, fruity and moderately cocoa like. The base stout is relatively simple - a little roast, medium dark chocolate - allowing the hops and coffee to shine. The palate opens moderately bitter and hoppy, a blend of citrus and pine with a noticeable espresso flavor and bitterness. Both the hops and the coffee add a pleasant oiliness, capturing and adhering the flavors to the palate. The mid palate has cocoa, fruity hops and a little bit of milk chocolate before a long, bitter finish with grain, hops and coffee present. Medium in body with soft carbonation, this feels great on the palate. This is excellent - think baby Speedway. Recommended.

Notes from 02.14.16
12oz bottle with Stone IRS snifter

This is a really great stout with a deep rich roastiness to it and pronounced hop bill. Tons of earthy coffee roast and chocolate espresso notes with a floral and citrusy component. Works well for me like a Victory Storm King. Pours semi-thick and dark as night with a dark tan bubbly foam head. Very smooth with some light char and black licorice/chicory noted on the backend. Alcohol is incredible well masked as this is pretty much a double Stout with some nice pop on the palate from the hop bitterness.

Bottle poured into a Stone Brewing Co snifter

A: Pours dark brown nearly black with a frothy cocoa brown head that settles to a light layer and leaves some nice lacing.

S: Roasty, earthy, espresso, dark chocolate, faint smoke and licorice, pine, herbal notes, a hint of citrus, and just a little dark sugar sweetness.

T: Roasty, plenty of espresso, dark chocolate, slightly nutty, a little spicy pine, herbal notes, subtle underlying citrus, orange, lemon, and grapefruit, rounded out with a hint of licorice, and some dark sugar sweetness.

M: Medium to full body, moderate carbonation, slightly creamy.

O: Don't ask me how I never managed to review this when it was fresh. It's aged very nicely, though. I imagine the coffee has mellowed a bit, but it's still plenty present. All around very enjoyable coffee stout.

This 10/16/2014 bottle was a gift from a friend who relocated and had to empty her beer fridge; lucky me! Since I'm not aware of what this tastes like fresh, I'm guessing that it was hoppier fresh but that's the extent of my assumptions.

Poured into a DFH tulip, it's a black body with a finger sized tan head. Even straight from a 50 degree fridge the coffee smell dominates everything. As it warms you get chocolate and vanilla and even a boozy aroma. The taste is flat out coffee with some stout malt char. Mouthfeel is very creamy and pleasant. For a not big alc stout this was a very positive experience. Even though I don't know what this tasted like fresh there's no sign that four years has had any obvious negative impact. Based on my grade compared to the average, maybe aging has been positive.
