Notes: The coffee notes in Stone Americano Stout are bold, rich and full of American swagger. For each 120-barrel batch, we incorporated over 250 lbs. of artisanal espresso-roast beans into the mash and added in Columbus, Chinook, Amarillo and Cascade hops to invigorate the coffee taste with a slight citrus and resin hop presence. When it came time to selecting our coffee, we chose the same local roasters who contributed to our sought-after 2013 Stone ESPRESSO Imperial Russian Stout. Their fantastic beans helped us achieve this dark, hoppy and wonderfully aromatic espresso stout.

Looks amazing with visible carbonation but it also looks coffee tinged in color, smells great too, taste is very good, a solid coffee stout.

12 ounce bottle - $2.99 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Bottled On: 01/16/16.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown, effectively black body underneath an inch of creamyish, yellow-biege foam. An almost prudent amount of lacing.

Smell: A strongly roasty, coffee-ish aroma blended with milky, darkish chocolate and given a bolt of citrus and fresh herbal pine, edging it a bit more as it warms.

Taste: Soundly roasty, fully coffee bean-beany with ample sweetness and given a coating of darkish chocolate. The blend of hops add some modest pine needle, some subtle lemony, oily citrus, but it doesn't really interfere with the espresso-grade roasted beans, and this coffee, roasty flavor carries through the finish with a little lingering citrus.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Quite pleasant and one of the better Stone releases I've had in a coon's age. A COONS AGE!

Pours a nice dark chocolate color. Aroma is big coffee and roasted malts. Flavor follows the nose. Big roasted malts and coffee all the way through. Has a solid mouthfeel and overall this has nice flavor and is a solid drink.

I’m still wondering when Stone will bring out their “Cold-Drip Steve Austin Stout”. Brewers seem to be enamoured to bad puns, dad jokes if you will, and that jest is hilarious and mighty in its craptacularity - it could even be as big and evil as the Chuck Norris meme... just saying. So Americano Stout - no doubt named after one of the worst coffee drink types ever devised [I mean why not just down an espresso instead - the mind boggles!]. Anyway, Americans can be strange in their ways, but Stone are strange in all the ways that are correct - I’m still dreaming about their amazing Xocoveza... if you ever see it: Buy immediately [and send to me]!

Poured from a 355ml bottle into a Duvel tulip.

A: Looks decadently rich in the glass from the off, like an opulent Wall street banker eating BBQ spare-ribs off a naked geisha at a yacht-based orgy. Body has the appearance of an inky black hole with a tasty rich tan head that slowly slips back onto itself like the dying star that it is. 9/10.

S: Dirty cacao nibs, roast espresso, hints of star anise, vanilla and wood fire - this is one American Double Stout you don’t mess with... if indeed you do normally mess with American Double Stouts, if so - you need to give your diabetes a break for a change. The aroma profile is borderline perfect bar one fact: I’m not getting much coffee on the nose here (kinda the opposite of FBS which was like pure-distilled coffee). 8/10.

T: This is a damn fine example of the style! Hits upfront with: Dirty cacao nibs and roast espresso bean, throws in some light citric hop notes (for good measure) then continues with hints of star anise, vanilla and a toasty wood fire char towards the finish. Tasty, toasty and roasty - all great things in a Stout. Aftertaste has a defined espresso coffee roast flavour. Much like the real-life Americano coffee it feels like it would benefit from a bit of full-cream milk - though adding this to a beer is not recommended. 9/10.

M: Medium bodied and oily, with a light but infinitesimally tight carbonation. 8/10.

D: If the brief is what’s written on the bottle label - this brew fulfils the brief. TBH the hop flavours weren’t that noticeable in the heady chaos of my enjoyment of this beer, nor do I care - I feel like this Stout, much like FBS, stands taller without the hops. Anything else? Well it’s no Xocoveza... sure wish they would release Xocoveza again already. 9/10.

Food match: I would drink this for breakfast if I was king, some drunken king.

Pours a dark brown color - it's light for a stout (bear in mind, I just drank Yeti earlier). The head is two fingers high and mocha in shade. Retention is average for the style, but the creamy texture leaves behind plenty of lacing on the sides of my glass.

At its heart, it smells just like I'd expect an archetypal west coast stout to. While I get plenty of dark chocolate, espresso (playing a supporting role instead of a dominant player), and brown sugar, I also get just as much in the way of bitter, piny, herbaceous hoppiness. Still, it succeeds mostly because the espresso works really well with the hoppy characteristics. Some gentle stone fruit notes also seem to come from the hops. A very intriguing nose, thanks to the aforementioned coffee/hop balance.

When this first hits my palate, I get the espresso almost immediately. Slowly but surely, the hop bite crescendos on the finish. In particular, I pick up plenty of pine, lemon (this works well when combined with the espresso notes), and grass. It's the lack of a significant stout presence that lets this beer down. I only get very subtle notes of caramel and brown sugar, much less the typical notes of chocolate and roast. I'd even suggest that the hops are the star - sometimes that can work quite well, but here (typical of many Stone beers) they come off slightly harsh and imbalanced.

Light on its feet for a stout, the hops make it quite dry and easy drinking. Note I said light on its feet, NOT dinky. It still has a medium-thick texture that leaves behind a lightly sweet residue. Carbonation is slightly high for a stout.

This really bites the way a good espresso bites - in that aspect, this one is a rip-roaring success. As a big coffee stout, though, it's only a middling effort. Personally, though, I'd only crave something like this every once in a while. It's a pricey six pack, so I don't think I'd buy it again.

Making nice with the coffee bean, Stone brewers coddle the taste that their premiere stouts reach to emulate. Their Americano stout showcases this local San Francisco bean in all its java glory.

And pouring like coffee, its deep and dark brown hues trick the eye into suggestions of black as a creamy mocha-stained froth builds. Spilling over with robust aromatics of cocoa, espresso and burnt toast, the nose if awash with all things roast. Burnt toffee and caramel lay on the early palate with a malty-sweet but seared in succulence that's charming and awaken with a caramelized delight.

Much of the same embarks on the middle palate as the flavors continue to develop those deep french roast flavors and its soiled, rootish character. Bright with cocoa powder and lightly smoldering embers, its roasty, toasty and gently smoked character outlasts the java and vanilla creaminess for a dry finish that's hoppily bitter, seemingly from coffee roast.

Creamy and boisterous with carbonation, the beer is creamy and off-full despite its imperialized strength; the beer's texture is smooth, creamy, roasty and playfully burnt. An after tow of coffee and burnt caramel play on the afterpalte like coffeehouse latte at eight percent strength.

Deep black with a dense, cream-like head. Excellent lacing.

Aroma of earth, peat, charcoal, espresso, and chili peppers.

Aggressive espresso beans upfront but in exceptional balance with a subtle burnt sugar sweetness. Charcoal and black licorice. Lively earthy, green, spinach-like hop character compliments the roastiness. Finishes dry with tons of savory coffee in the aftertaste.

Medium to full bodied. Somewhat sticky with a super dry finish. Very well carbonated.

This may very well be the best non-aged coffee beer I have every tried. Super complex and tasty. Alcohol is completely undetected. If not for its strength, I would drink this all day!

Black as night in the glass with a thick, light tan colored head, this one might pass for an espresso in the right cup. Espresso is the first thing out of the glass as well, showing off its dark flavors with a strong nose. Up front it is straight, dark, mostly bitter roast, but as the scent goes on a light fruitiness kicks in, as well as the slightest bit of nuttiness. The hops are just barely detectable behind the coffee on the nose.

Big, giant, bitter espresso explodes on the tongue first in a blast of dirty, black coffee. The espresso is the exact same flavor as it was in the scent, except about 5 times stronger. Bitter roasts coat the tongue and dominate the entire drink, almost, but not quite, drowning out the touch of citrus hops bitterness towards the end of the drink. The drink itself is just a touch on the thicker side of beers, but just a bit. It is surprisingly easy to drink for its ABV, but its bitter espresso roast makes it a little more of a sipper.

Overall, if you are a fan of the blackest, dirtiest, darkest cup of coffee you can find, this is the coffee stout for you. The espresso reminds me of the authentic Italian roasts I had this past fall in Italy; huge, dark, and bitter. I'm honestly surprised that I don't have some sort of a caffeine buzz yet.

Brewed on 2/28/16 so drinking about 5-6 weeks fresh. Look is average for a stout. Small tan head, shoudl be bigger. However I revisited my rating on look and bumped it up because the lacing is incredible. Leave lacing rings on the glass with each sip like rings of Saturn. Incredible. Smell is a wonderful coffee roast. That's pretty much all I pick up, but its great. Taste is fantastic. Excellent espresso coffee flavor, some chocolate, extremely smooth and clean crisp finish. Absolutely nothing ashy or bitter from the coffee or hops like some other coffee stouts I've had by other brewers. Mouthfeel is very big and creamy, feels like a 12%+brew but its a modest 8.7% (which I realize is big for 99% of beer drinkers...but us nerd crowd...well you guys understand). I honestly don't notice the various hops that are mentioned on the bottle, but overall this is a fantastically brewed coffee variant stout (that was not thrown in a barrel). Highly recommend.

355ml bottle poured into an oversized wine glass.

Pitch black in color with thick bubbly tan head that stands with good retention, it slowly subsides to everlasting foamy film atop along with plenty of refined and intricate lacing. Carbonation seems to be high with a push of active effervescence to the surface.

Pack with very inviting aroma, predominated by fresh espresso coffee. Other scents in a nose are cocoa, roasted malt, some black bread, hint of citrus, and wee spiciness.

Still led by a very nice espresso coffee note together with some cocoa and roasted malt, significant malty sweetness reveals in the middle trying to balance those roasted and bitter traits. Hops exhibit their spicy and citrus character to add up the level of complexity. Finish is long-lasting with some astringency, bitter roasted coffee bean, and bready malt sweetness that delicately wrap up together.

Medium body with a bit syrupy touch, smooth mouthfeel with lively carbonation whelming through the palate, finish is dry.

Huge coffee in both aroma and flavor together with its impressive appearance and remarkable feel, I could treat this brew as morning coffee every day. Alcohol is concealed underneath its greatness, just some slightly warm feel at the end of the sip.

Almost of an inch of creamy foam on the initial pour. Definitely rich-looking.
Smell is coffee, roasted malt, and hops. Hints of chocolate. Fairly simple but well-balanced.
Nice balance of coffee and malt, and, typical of Stone, an aggressively hopped finish.
Medium density with the carbonation giving it a somewhat light feel.
Overall, it's not a bad coffee stout, but I think the hops of the finish are overly aggressive. The coffee already adds enough bitterness.
