Pours a deep, dark black with copious tan head and plentiful lacing. Visible, milky thickness. Smells strongly of cocoa, leather, alcohol, roasted malts. Tastes is unsweetened cocoa, molasses, burnt marshmallow – a bit of funky barnyard , bittersweet chocolate and the barest hint of hops – the oat influence seems to smooth the transition between the sweet – bitter and provides a characteristic mouthfeel.. Mouthfeel is medium to thick, the carbonation and the high ABV make it rather astringent – helps clean the palate despite the malty sweetness.
Though Stone is well known for its hop forward beers – their stouts are rather good – well balanced and reasonably priced. I rather enjoyed it and wouldn’t hesitate to pick it up again.

Poured into my favorite long stim tulip glass bottled on 1/15/16. Poured slowly down the center of the glass and got a massive 3 finger mocha head with excellent retention taking 5 minutes to settle into a thick film of brown bubbles and covering the sides of the glass with lace. As attractive as a stout gets.

Smell is roasty dark chocolate and expresso, toffee, oats, vanilla beans, oak, Bailey's Irish Cream, and a little hint of booze.

Taste follows a wallop of roasted dark chocolate expresso, vanilla beans, toffee, oak, oats, and a Bailey's Irish Cream flavor that gives it the hint of alcohol.

Mouthfeel is on the large side, yet creamy, moderate carbonation which works perfectly I am not complaining, as expected a little dry, and insane drinkability! Wow special.

Overall I can't think of anything I would change, the only Stout that I have had the reminds me of this is Great Divide ExpressO Yeti. Perfect for my tastes.

Look: Pitch black with a creamy, mocha-brown head that leaves sheets of lacing.

Smell: Tons of dark chocolate, roasted malts, espresso, and a savory umami/soy sauce note. So inviting.

Taste: Deeply dark chocolaty. Blackened cacao bitterness, roastiness of espresso, burnt sugar, and burnt toast. Nicely balanced between roasty bitterness and some milk chocolate sweetness. Hints of soy sauce, vanilla, and smoke add complexity and savoriness. The finish is long and the aftertaste lingers of dark chocolate and black coffee. Superb.

Feel: This is the only area where this disappointed me a little bit. This drinks medium, but I would prefer a bit fuller mouthfeel. Drinks very easily, though.

Overall: This is a real treat, like a gourmet dessert in a glass. Recommended for any fan of dark beer or quality chocolate.

22 ounce bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled on 1/10/2016. Pours pitch black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky dark brown head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, vanilla, molasses, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, wood, light pepper/pine, light licorice/dark fruit, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, cocoa, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, vanilla, molasses, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, wood, light pepper/pine, light licorice/dark fruit, and roast/toasted earthiness. Moderate herbal/pine/spicy and roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, vanilla, molasses, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, wood, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, cocoa, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from roast/hop bitterness that increases through the glass. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an excellent imperial stout. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, cocoa, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

I can see why they brought this one back. This beer is very smooth, belying its somewhat elevated ABV, with pronounced bitter chocolate on the nose and in the taste, and a silky feel thanks to the oats. If this was an annual offering in 6-packs, it would be a staple during these darker months. I'm glad, at least, that Stone sent it out for an encore. It deserved one.

Really glad that Stone is doing some releases in the Encore Sreies for their 20th Anniversary, getting to taste some brews from the past.

This one pours an opaque black with a nice finger-width mocha coloured head. Smell is definitely of bitter chocolate, with notes of vanilla, hazelnut, roast, malt, oat and faint hops.Taste delves deeper into the darkness. Bitter chocolate comes through strong, blending with the dark malt and grain profile, some faint hop bitterness but this definitely leans heavy on the bitter baking cacao end of the spectrum. There is even some woody, oaky flavour; deep coffee roast, charred vanilla bean, charcoal, tobacco, nutmeg. The oat presence is a little subdued but does leave a nice creamy mouthfeel that evens out the cacao bitterness. Glad that this wasnt an overly sweet brew. Good soft carbonation with a dry finish, but pleasantly smooth.

I didn't get the chance to try the original, but I definitely enjoyed this Encore release. Would definitely do well with some aging, as I will probably do with another bottle. Lives up to the name of being a bitter chocolate stout. Bring on the next!

Reddish tan head. Dead black in the middle. Razor thin reddish glisten on the edges. Coffee and coco nose. Nice dark chocolate flavor. Coffee in the back of the pallet going back up to the nose. A bit of cola. Full body but carbonation evens it out. gets silkier as it warms.

Overall a very good stout but I don't really detect the oatmeal. Really pulls off the bitter chocolate portion of the name

Black color with brown head. Aroma has some sweet malt and chocolate. Taste is bittersweet with chocolate and cacao and roasted malt finish. Medium body and carbonation. Quite good overall, a solid chocolate stout.

Nice chocolate aroma. Taste has plenty of chocolate and sweetness. Rich, earthy, smoky, good. Chocolate and cream. The mouthfeel is appropriately thick. Remains very drinkable.
