This version of Stone RuinTen Triple IPA imagines orange peel and vanilla bean being caught moshing with this hardcore hop legend. Its original inspiration starts back with our decision to take the 2002 release of Stone Ruination IPA and make it into a much bigger and even hoppier monstrosity in 2012 for its 10th anniversary. With this change, our mega-hopped double went triple IPA. Soon after its release, the nickname "RuinTen" began to circulate and stuck. No sooner did we sell out of the special release that you guys began to loudly clamor for more of this veritable hop behemoth, and from that noise the annual RuinTen release was born. Totally being ones to mess with a good thing, we decided to introduce two new ingredients to produce this modern-day, frenzied mosh pit of hops: orange peel and vanilla bean. The result is a melee of flavor. Dive in, or watch from the seats. Your Call. You'll find us in the pit.

July 1st, 2016 - Like a boozy, alcoholic and vegetable rich smoothie, this special flavored triple IPA smells of sweet carrot and orange, though without any of that nutritive benefit one gets with a $12 Jamba Juice. Good spiciness on the flavor too, with a mirror image of the nose on the tongue, but adding some zing with ginger. Delicious, if strong, and worth small sips.

This whole quarantine/lockdown/fast cruise business has done wonders for me in terms of clearing out massive swaths of the backlog here at Chez Woody! This latest renewal of a long-standing love affair with Stone Brewing began with me simply pulling out a couple of CANs, but then it became like tugging on a pesky loose thread on a knit sweater. Soon, I was left facing a bundle of unraveled string in the form of a massive mess of Bottles (gasp!) & CANs! OMFG.

From the Bottle (!): "This version of Stone RuinTen Triple IPA imagines orange peel and vanilla bean being caught moshing with this hardcore hop legend. Its original inspiration starts back with our decision to take the 2002 release of Stone Ruination IPA and make it into a much bigger and even hoppier monstrosity in 2012 for its 10th anniversary. I Pop!ped the cap & started a slow, gentle C-Line pour into the awaiting glass. It was heartening to watch it foam up to form just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head before I had to back down & off. Color was a gorgeous Amber to Deep-Amber/Light-Copper (SRM = > 9, < 13) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was redolent with orange, vanilla & a massive dose of fusel alcohol! 8=O This one was making no secret of what it was bringing. It was like a boozy liquefied Creamsicle/Dreamsicle from when I was a kid. Vanilla ice-cream enrobed with orange sherbet! Plus the booze. 8=O Mouthfeel was appropriately big, thick & full, like a dollop had been scooped into my mouth & onto my tongue. The taste was full-on boozy Creamsicle/Dreamsicle! 8=O The moderate bitterness was more citrusy than hoppy & even then, it was tempered with the vanilla. That was okay since I was pretty well satiated for the moment in terms of hoppy bitterness.

22 ounce bottle into a tulip snifter. Bottled 5/26/17, had 7/10/17.

Pours a mostly clear, bright orange, with a one inch foamy head and a good amount of soapy lacing. Aromas of vanilla- it definitely smells like beans, orange peel, citrus hops, light malt and yeast, a little burnt wood. The taste is vanilla beans, citrus hops, some resin, malt, caramel, orange peel. A strong hop bitterness from the middle through the finish. A little sweet overall. Smooth, a little creamy, well carbonated, a solid medium body.

Love the vanilla, especially in the flavor. Still hoppy and bitter and as good as the original, just in a different way.

This was strange int he best way. Loved the subtle vanilla bean to go along with the citrus. A few of my friends aren't into it, but I thought it was delicious!

Poured from one pint six fluid ounce bottle into glass. Bottled On Date is stamped as '05/26/17'.
Clear, pale amber colored body (final pour introduces some cloudiness). Eggshell white head starts out as three finger high, and settles to a thick cap. Major coverage of lacing.
Get lots of vanilla bean in the smell, also orange, and spicy hops.
Taste includes the vanilla, but has much more of the citrus and piney hops, with the orange peel as an added emphasis. Also has some biscuit malt backbone. Definitely has a higher level of bitterness.
Medium, somewhat creamy mouth feel.
Certainly a higher ABV IPA, but the vanilla and orange additions allow the beer to stand out as something different in aroma and taste.

A: This poured a hazy copper with some light tan head.
S: It smelled like orange and ginger, with some cream and pine.
T: It tasted like orange and lemon zest and pine, with some cream and ginger. It had a clean bitter aftertaste.
M: It was thick with some carbonation. Great big body.
D: This was an odd drink. I wanted to like it as a NE style IPA, but the scent and taste didn't gel and ended up less than delicious. The body was awesome, but the finish was a little harsh, so it was better to sip. Interesting to try, but either the hop selection didn't work or the vanilla didn't add the right flavor to achieve a great creamy citrus profile.

Poured from a bomber into a Duvel tulip

L: Clear golden orange pour with 3 fingers of massive foamy white head. Crazy lacing.

S: Classic stone hop presence. Not picking up much in the way of vanilla. Orange and citrus are present and accounted for.

T/F: Light grains... sweet vanilla hits immediately (didn't smell it, definitely taste it). Almost like a mild orange cream sickle added atop citrusy Stone-style hops. Mild pine... sticky on the tongue. Medium bodied... zesty carbonation. Almost perfume-like towards the finish with more orange and vanilla. ABV not quite hidden... warming.

O: A pretty complex and interesting triple IPA. I'm picking up the flavors advertised and they play together better than I would have expected and the higher ABV works for this one. Not one I'd want a steady diet of but a cool brew.

It’s edging closer to #950, and the beers are getting bigger and better, this time it’s a heavyweight brew in the craft beerosphere: Stone RuinTen Triple IPA - Orange Peel & Vanilla Bean. This 10.8% ABV Triple IPA is a triple threat with orange peel, vanilla bean, and of course a blindingly great hop bill with Magnum, Centennial and Citra® hops. Best of three worlds, or the best of all? Usually with Stone it is the latter, however this one has a June 8 2017 bottle date and is way past the “best by” for any hops, so the *hop fade* alert must be sounded [which sounds a bit like a klaxon being drowned in beer]. That said even the beers that I’ve had from Stone that were sorely out of date “shelf turds” have been pretty bitchen, and the addition of orange peel should provide a citrus boost to where the hops once were *fingers crossed*.

Poured from a 650ml US Bomber sized bottle into a Duvel tulip.

A: Wow, nice hazed deep orange/amber body with a thin beige head that slowly descends leaving behind splotchy lace pockets. The colour of this brew is an ominous orange, like a warning for sailors to turn back or risk ending up in Davy Jones locker (which is apparently large and watery). 8/10.

S: A highly viscous aroma, it’s like some sort of orange honey, with a peppery background note and a touch of green hop cones rounding out an impressive and foreboding Triple IPA. This is Stone doing their thing - repeatedly punching you in the face with delicious beer. Stone... Stop that Stone. No noticeable vanilla bean in the aroma is a minor disappointment. 9/10.

T: Flavour comes on strong, and slightly hot (alcohol-wise), which is no doubt due to the date on this bottle. Flavours of oranges (peel and all) with a piney, almost bubble-gum character, peppery mid, dry cracker malt, hints of pineapple, and a sweet schnapps finish. The flavour is a little bit all over the shop - which is unusual for Stone who usually craft exceptionally well-balanced beers. Still this is a 10.8% Triple IPA I have to keep reminding myself as I chow down on 5.54 standard drinks. 7/10.

M: Mid to heavy, fairly viscous bodied, with an almost flat but dense carbonation. 8/10.

D: Didn’t get the vanilla bean at all, I think it kinda got drowned out in a cacophony of flavours, but aside from that, and the flavour balance, this was a brew that I would try again (if I could get it fresh). Stone still indeed rock. 8/10.

Food match: Tough match, this beer is a bit of a meal in itself - maybe Thai food.

I bought this by mistake. I had intended to buy two bombers of tangerine express and got one of these instead. The orange peel is spot on but I could do without the vanilla. It doesn't taste like a 10% beer. It is very good nonetheless.

Pours orange amber with a short-lived memory foam head. Aroma is orange peel, but not overly citrusy. This surprises me. Taste is quite complex, lots of orange up front, but plenty of swamp and malt. I don't get the vanilla, but I bet it is there smoothing out this crazy cross-section of flavors. Mouthfeel is smooth and thick, but with a crisp finish, very nice. Solid brew. I'm not sure it is $9 dollars good, but I don't feel like I wasted my money either.
