20th Anniversary Citracado IPA20th Anniversary Citracado IPA

Brewed by:
Stone Brewing
California, United States

Style: American Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
For 20 years our passion for brewing and our obsession with hops have challenged traditional styles and expectations for beer. So it’s only fitting we commemorate this momentous occasion by crafting a liquid ode to bold brewing that satisfies your hop thirst and pays homage to our flagship San Diego brewery, located on Citracado Parkway (which itself pays homage to the citrus and avocado agricultural history of the region).

“Citracado” also teases the two key ingredients of this beer. “Citra” refers both to the juicy gem of a hop and its citrusy (and tropical) aromas and flavors. “Cado” inspired us to utilize wonderful, native avocado flower honey. Combine the two and the result pours like silk and abounds with enough hops to match our excitement for reaching this 20-year milestone. We thank you sincerely for the years of support and pledge that we will, as always, strive to live up to the reasons for your loyalty!

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Always look forward to Stone's anniversary brews and this milestone one was a must have. Residing in the region this brew was inspired, you can't help but feel a connection.

This one pours smoothly; A very deep copper, almost garnet hue. Creamy, off-white head stands finger-width, receding to a ring of foam around the glass. Not much lace sticking around. Aroma is citra-hop forward, along with pine, citrus zest, honey, caramel, grass. Deep floral and herbal notes.

Pine resin, lemon peel, orange, grass, citra hop bitterness up front on taste. I'm honestly not too familiar with the avocado flower honey aspect of this brew, but there is a definite floral and earthy touch to this one, reminiscent of hibiscus IPAs I've had. Hints of prickly pear and guava, even. Malt backbone is present and balances this brew out real well; bread dough, crackers, caramel, butterscotch and lemon candy. Touches of peppermint, honey and hops hops hops round things out.

Surprisingly light on its feet for an ABV of 9%; which, by the way, is masked quite nicely. Smooth and easy drinking. Bitter bite gives way to a clean, slightly sweet finish that leaves you wanting more. 22oz is not enough.

Cheers to Stone for reaching this landmark and cheers to all who enjoy what this brewery stands for: True Craft.

L: Poured between gently and mildly-aggressive. Very little head on top of the beer. The beer itself is a nice hazy amber color with a little bit of light coming through the glass.

S: I'm getting a strong malt presence in the nose. Some hoppiness, but I was hoping for more Citra to be honest. Some honey, maybe some grapefruit/mango. Mostly malt sweetness.

T: Tastes very much like it smells. More on the malty side than the hoppy side. I did notice this was bottled about 4 months ago, and I wonder if some of the hops have faded. Sweet and slightly bready.

F: It's got a decent body on it. I am getting a little bit of heat from the alcohol. Actually, there is a slight hint of hoppiness towards the backend.

O: I am thinking that this beer sat too long. It's not nearly as hoppy as I was anticipating. Regardless, it's still on par with some of the more sweet, malty IPA's that I have had.

22 oz bottle poured into a stemmed tulip.

Ruby tinted amber with 1+ fingers of creamy head. Good clarity with light carbonation.

Candied orange, mango, honey, passion fruit, grapefruit zest, and pine resin.

Candied orange and grapefruit pith. Light mango and passion fruit. Notes of aloe vera and eucalyptus. Firm honey and caramel maltiness. Finishes with grapefruit pith, pine resin, and some onion.

Full bodied, silky, oily, semi-dry, and moderately bitter.

Citra forward and bitter with a firm maltiness. Tastes and looks very "Red IPA-ish."

Oh my goodness. If you like IPAs, and if you really like Double IPAs, this is it. A BLAST of hops that smoothes out with a nice balance of malts and yeasts. The bitterness is perfect. Honey as it warms. Classic amber pour. Beautiful layering. STONE!! 9.0% ABV

Served in a Stone snifter glass.

Appearance: Semi-cloudy brown to Amber body with medium bubbles to it. Head is off-white maybe two fingers off the body and pretty thick at first. Disappears after two or three sips.

Smell: Malty scent is is very appetizing. Comes off sweet like honey.

Taste: Walnuts and pecans infused with malts and a smooth dose of hops. Brew is sweet, but more of the citrus side...straight pink grapefruit and more floral feel which is very satisfying.

Mouth: Medium to heavy carbonation and very sticky.

Overall: Great brew, hopefully Stone keeps it around for a while. I love their anniversary beers and this one delivers like the mailman. Salud!

Appearance: Clear dark amber, big head.

Smell: Tropical fruit, pine.

Taste: Sweet, tropical fruit flavors with a sweet caramel-like flavor (which after reading the bottle is almost definitely the avacado honey). Moderate bitterness, very nice comibination of fruit and caramel.

Overall: Man, I really liked this beer! I like my DIPA's a bit on the sweet side, so the mysterious caramel/honey flavor of this beer made it stand out big time. Citra hops are also a favorite, so the combination is pretty awesome. Highly recommended!

Pours in to a goblet a deep auburn hued amber with a creamy off white head atop, wow really nice color kind of hard to describe it really.Bright citrus fruits jump out in the nose with sweetish honeyed undertones,a bit of alcohol detected as well.A full but mellow feel, not alot of carbonation to get in the way.A decent amount of sharpness on the palate, much more grapefruit than expected but in saying that it's not really a bad thing....The sharpness mellows into a tangerine-like fruitiness in the finish along with a surprising spicy note. This is a pretty complex beer and worthy of a 20th Anniversary from Stone.

In a snifter the beer was a dark amber color with a small tan head.
Tropical fruit and citrus aroma. Honey. Some pine.
Pineapple and honey taste up front, with some late grapefruit.
Smooth, medium-bodied. On the sweet side.

22 oz bottle. Pours light copper amber with a big pillowy off white head that retains well and leaves little lacing.

The aroma is bready malt, piney peppery hops and a little fruit with some metallic notes.

The flavor is sweet bready malt and some sugary fruit with a big piney peppery hop bitterness and some alcohol in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, just OK.

This thing is a changeling. The taste is constantly shifting from citrus, to melon, to tropical fruit and over again with a subtle honey in the background. Incredibly beer.

"Cheers to 20 Years!"

Bomber bottle, bottled on 8-6-16 - etched onto the bottle

Pours a nice rich darker shade of amber then most DIPAs, long lasting frothy cap, leaving a thicker film and worthy sheeting and strands of thicker lace.

Bold nose of whole wheat bread and resiny as well as citric hops

No surprises here, this is a delicious creation, well hoped, malty under carraige...well crafted and so worth a try. Congrats STONE on two decades of great, bold, interesting, and of course arrogant brews

Snifter on tap at WOB-USF in Tampa. Smell is heavy on distinct citra with a hint of floral honey. Taste is less citra than the aroma with more sweet malt and a boozy bite. Mouthfeel is light bodied with slight bitterness but high alcohol flavor. Overall a better smelling beer than drinking. Surprisingly boozy.

Deep copper colored with an inch of creamy beige head. I smell bitter citrus hops and they are rounded out by the sweetness of the honey. The mouth is pretty unusual for a double IPA due to the addition of the honey. The taste is initially quite subdued on the front of the palate, but then as you get to the back there's a burst of citrus hops. Those hops are rounded out by the sweet honey which appears at the finish. This is fairly unique! It comes off as creamy, very dry, and a touch chalky.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Stone can glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of off white head that slowly settles into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: A juicy and dank hop driven aroma with a scent of citrus, pine, and subtle honey. Upfront citrus hop scent of orange peel, grapefruit, mango, lemon, tangerine, passion fruit, melon, and pineapple. Earthy and floral hops with some hints of pine resin and cannabis. Hints of the honey sweetness comes through. Malt hints of caramel, grains, and cracker with yeast. A really good aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a juicy and piney hop dominated taste with notes of citrus fruit, pine, and honey. Big citrus hop presence with juicy notes of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, tangerine, lemon, passion fruit, melon, and pineapple. Earthy hop notes of pine resin and grass. Light honey sweetness. Background malt notes of caramel, cracker, and grains along with some yeast. A really nice juicy taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Very juicy and oily with a drying finish.

Overall: Another great IPA from the masters at Stone. Good mix of citrus and piney hop flavor with a nice light touch of honey.
