As if our seasonally released Stone Coffee Milk Stout wasn’t special enough, we decided to take our classic brewhouse blend and make our own riff by adding fresh chocolate mint and peppermint. The bright, intoxicating aromatics of the chocolate and mint emanating from this smooth-drinking, caffeinated libation are palpable. However, they are simply just a refreshing accent to this still predominately coffee brew. From the creamy, frothy head on top to the semisweet, slightly dry finish, we don’t think our brewing team could have whipped up a better recipe for this extra-special time of year.

November 8th, 2016 - I'm not too keen on mint (I don't even like it in ice cream! A crime, I am told...), but this beer does great justice to the layers a little mint can bring to a darker brew. The smell is laced with that fresh pepperment and chocomint note, but built on a sturdy base of malts and darker grains. There's no mistaking the mint here, but it's not gross or unpleasant or cloying. The mint in the flavor is also well moderated, though stronger in the aftertaste than elsewhere. And that might be just as well, since it feels fitting to end a meal - and each slow sip - with a minty and refreshing bite.

spring tease and now back to the cold... so plucking through my cellar I spotted this stout

eyes...
jet black with a nice finger of head, good lacing with nice consistent size bubbles, not much else, pretty much a stout looking stout...

nose...
minty coffee... I know, shocking... the mint hits upfront followed by a billow of chocolate, this is as close to an andes mint as a beer can be sans the lovely green wrapper (some brewer is going to steal that if they haven't already)

taste...
my first thought it the exceptional mouth feel, incredibly smooth stuff (a witty metaphor escapes me at the moment), The flavors are a touch subdued but there is a real balance here. Everything you want in a stout is here but with little nods here and there... like you are at a party and your buds are just giving you that little man nod as you raise drinks in a mock toast from across the way while their girl is not looking, just enough roast, just enough sweetness to remind you of milk stout.. and then a slightly bitter finish with that mint blanket accompanying it... the more I drink forward the more I am savoring this... and so damn light... you can breeze through this but man you will be missing out, savor this puppy.

verdict?
I imagine if this was a Keurig flavor we would break the coffee machine at work (again...), delicious, not a perfect beer but totally exemplary of what is on the label, and nice not to be hit in the head with ABV once in a while.. make it again sam! I mean stone....

Dark brown color, two fingers brown head, good retention and lacing. Smell and taste are mint, coffee, milk chocolate. Really mint aroma and mint taste. Light body. Nice.

- Duvel chalice. Laced with fresh peppermint and chocolate mint.

A: Dark khaki capping is milky froth sitting atop a shiny black colored pour. Head retention is outstanding, with tiny golden micro-beads building on the head.

S: Upon first uncapping a big burst of mint-chocolate can be had. The alcohol and lactose like scents gives off an almost bourbon like flair, despite not being barrel aged to my knowledge. Creamer and fresh whole mint leaves with a background of earthy roast malt and coffee. Final mention of minty-pine hops. Really love the fresh wet factor of the chocolate mint and creamer/lactose like flair. Solid strength.

T: Minty alcohol is the first impression. Dark roasty coffee quickly follows. Roasty bitterness shows big minty moments, while the chocolate is more restrained then was on the nose. Nice light campfire minerality, silty, with fine coffee grounds. Very nice minty leave on the swallow.

M: Silky coffee ground texture on the tongue, while the body is on the lighter side. Gentle massage of carbonation with a dry, chalky, irish stout like finish.

O: A strong, fresh wet aromatic start, full of mint and lactose. The flavor is bold, smooth, and silty roast with a finish of minty flair. Not as generally sweet as a milk stout, more bitter, roasty as a big stout. You can easily sense the mint-chocolate, with a finish similar to those little mint-chocolate candies. Good drink-ability, the full flavor and minty chocolate give this a much bigger impression.

Light proof black colored beer with a brown colored head. It sure as hell is dark colored.

Smells strongly of coffee and patent malt. Smells slightly metallic. Mint is in there but well hidden. Chocolate is even fainter than the mint.

Starts out Mildly sweet and tasting mostly of patent malt. Coffee is of the Charbucks variety. Not getting much coffee or mint. What I am tasting is a STRONGLY patent malt forward stout.

Mouthfeel is thick.

Overall this is OK, but I expected more mint and coffee.

Bottle poured into a Stone Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours very nearly black with a frothy cocoa brown head that settles to a firm layer and leaves a little nice lacing.

S: No mistaking the mint's presence, though not overbearing or unpleasant, roasted malt, dark chocolate and coffee, and a little lactose sweetness.

T: Roasted malt, coffee and super dark chocolate, slowly gives way to very pleasant mint flavor, some mild earthy herbal tones, a hint of vanilla, and a bit of lactose sweetness.

M: A bit on the fuller side of medium body, moderate carbonation, mildly creamy, not what you'd expect from a 5% beer.

O: I remember feeling that the original version of this beer needed a little something extra and it turns out that something is mint. Really nice balance with the coffee, mint, and lactose all keeping each other in check. I'll be on the lookout for another bottle.

Pours a pitch black color with a finger width foamy head. Head retention is minimal. Lacing is mild. Peppermint and coffee aroma with very mild chocolate in the background. A lot of coffee up front with some strong mint flavor. Ends with more of a medicinal taste. Medium bodied. Mildly silky. Medium to heavy carbonation.
