Notes: Formerly known as Mixtape Ale Vol. 13

A tropical IPA that transports you... to a hop-induced state.

Imagine the tropical haze of a lazy afternoon-into-evening. Your official duties for the day have been to maybe take a hike to a secluded waterfall, perhaps grill something, definitely chill with plenty of sand between your toes... and ctack a phenomenal beer to complete the experience. Check, check, check again and... pfffft... check.

This ain't no just-add-juice approach. This one is for adults. We use bountiful whole tangerine purée, which brings pithy, crisp bitterness to thr citrus flavor. In addition to the complexities of the tangerine - the likes of which you can only get by using the whole fruit - we judiciously employ just a hint of whole pineapple for a backnote (you'd likely not even pick it out of the mix if we didn't tell you it was there). We're not looking for a sweet concoction to appease the "I want my beer to taste like fruit juice" crowd. This is Stone. We like our IPAs to taste like IPAs. Big, bold and not for kids.

Now that's what I'm talking about. A standard strength American IPA that celebrates high tropical and citrus flavor but without giving up on dryness or bitterness. Though I love "juicy" hop bombs, the crispness, cleanliness and dryness that leads to drinkability has largely become forgotten. With the west coast mentality leading away, Stone Brewing Company reestablishes the IPA in the current fruit forward market.

Pale gold and with amber and orange tints, the pineapple and orange infused IPA pours with bright clarity and growing eggshell foam. Radiant with perfumy orange peel, sharp red grapefruit and a kiss of graham cracker and light caramel, Tangerine Express carries the herbal nature of lemon verbena, fresh grassiness and citrus peels across a calm malty taste of honey, caramel and pecan.

As the malt sweetness fades fast its the hops that do the talking through the middle palate. Sensational citrus flavors of tangerine, peach, red grapefruit, mango and apricot round into a bitter taste that's soothed only with the aspects of pineapple and a glimpse of vanilla. Its soft and soothing flavor is only preceded by a gripping clean bitterness of resinous spruce, fresh cut grass and a bouquet of herbal botanicals.

Medium bodied yet trending dry, crisp and clean, the beer's finish is bitter, clean and sharp. Not for the faint of heart, this isn't a soft and creamy finish. It's a gullet gripping, citrus oil and peppery herb bite that brings us back to the west coast IPA that die hear hop heads have grown to love.

So I bought this beer on a whim just wanting to try it so I picked up a 22 oz for 4.99.
Look: Nice amber orange color, it is see through and has about 1 finger of head on the pour.

Smell: it smells it a nice citrus Hop bomb. Loads of citrus, Tangerine, pineapple, Grapefruit, hops, west coast style for sure. Smells awesome.

TASTE: the taste is simply Amazing. Picked up a bottle that was bottles on 8/27/17 tried to 10/1/17. The flavors are all there. Has a nice Tangerine, pineapple Grapefruit and a bit piney taste with tons of hops a nice almost vanilla like sweet finish.
Feel: not to heavy so drinkable that easily get you into trouble at 6.7% Apv. Just a perfect balance.

Overall: I rate this beer very high. This is like a flavor explosion on my palate. Just an absolute great IPA with tons of Citrus and hops with a slight sweet vanilla Finish. Absolutely in love with this west coast Style IPA. Definetely pick up if your into Hops and Citrus with a nice touch of perfect sweetness.

Beautiful bottling as always from Stone. How many ipa styles can this brewery nail? This is yet another finely crafted brew. Juicy tangerine shots through classic Stone hop headedness. This beautiful liquid has an orange tint to it with a nice head.

It's aroma is fruity and tropical. Hops blend well with its backbone delighting the nose. Flavors of this is brilliant. Solid rush of juicy tangerines and hop bitterness followed by the smallest hint of fresh pineapple. Finish is clean and tropical. Excellent feel as expected from a top shelf brewery. Texture is world class and it took no time for me to drink this entire bomber bottle.

This is why I Love Stone Brewing Co.
I always know they will have a slew of world class ipas when everything else is missing in that moment. Beautiful beer!

two finger head fading quickly, strong smell of citrus mainly orange. strong bittering and dry finish, thin mouth feel, tangerine taste disappears with pineapple as a complete no show overall beer is okay but lable writes a check that the beer can't cash.

STONE TANGERINE EXPRESS IPA 8/2/17

Poured from the 22 oz. bomber into a Tree House stemmed tulip pint. Bottled on date looks like 6/30/17, best by 10/13/17.

a: Translucent gold with a half finger thick white head which receded to uneven surface foam and dense lacing.

s: Strong citrus detectable from a foot away.

t: Follows the nose with grapefruit and slight tangerine notes over a medium biscuit malt base. Moderate hop bite lingers at the back sides of the mouth in the dry, bitter finish.

m: Medium, good body and carbonation tingle.

o: Pretty much as anticipated, although more bitter than one might expect a brew touting tangerines. If they called it "Grapefruit Express IPA" I would not have quibbled. Tasty and refreshing, a good value in the $5 range this was purchased for.

Pours a golden orange with some sediment. Aroma of tangerine, orange, pine, and tropical fruit. Flavors of tangerine and orange, light tropical fruit, light malt, and a pine backbone. Feel is solid. Overall, excellent fruited IPA. I really like this and it's a nice bargain. The fruit complements the hops well and never gets too sweet.

pours an orange-gold with a solid head, looks nice

the aroma pops out of the bottle. sweet and citrus-y. definitely get orange notes early and often. full of citrus (as was expected) and light on malt.

taste is surprisingly bitter, very good. kinda like their regular IPA with tangerine thrown in. not bad at all. too much citrus to drink a bunch but this is worth a try. would be nice after a long day of work during the summer

22oz bottle, tulip, bottled 10/27/17.

The color is, well, a tangerine hue of orange yellow. The head is a towering off-white affair that leaves an intricate patter on the glass.

Pine and hop resin are the primary aromas with tangerine and dry pineapple as secondaries.

In classic Stone style, this is a true American IPA, full of juicy, pungent hop flavors. It's a mixture of pine, tangerine oil, and pineapple with a very unobtrusive pale malt body. Tropical flavors are the focus, not the bitterness, even though Tangerine Express isn't lacking in that department.

While not a negative, this is a remarkably thin beer, like water. The carbonation is moderate and doesn't overwhelm or become fizzy.

Once again, Stone has produced a phenomenal hoppy beer. The juice additions blend harmoniously with the hops in a way not all fruit IPAs achieve.

Poured from 22oz into Spiegelau IPA glass. Bottled on January 25th 2017.

L: Light orange, lots of particulate. Great two finger off white head, lots of fluff, excellent retention and lacing.

S: Lots of tangerine and orange here, hints of pineapple, really inviting aroma!

T: Lots of citrus hops, tangerine, orange and just a hint of pineapple. Not much malt presence. Very tasty. Additionally some grapefruit, and even grassy notes as well. Good solid bitterness.

F: Light-medium body, good carbonation, bit oily on the tongue but not too much. Dry finish.

O: Another great IPA and another good beer from Stone.
