Collaboration with Marble Brewery & Odell Brewing Co.

Kick back and crank it up as we’ve done all the brewing…the we being us and the special guest appearances of two heavy hitters in the indie craft beer industry: New Mexico’s Marble and Colorado’s Odell. Credited with 58 years of brewing chops, our trio built their wheat ale foundation on the classic “C” hops. Then, we rocked a pure hop triad of “M” hops to achieve a supercharged succession of orange, tangerine, lemon, lime, spice and dankness. The undulating riffs of Motueka, Mosaic and Mandarina Bavaria hops slash through the wheat haze with equal footing, never playing over one another. The cacophony of flavor is what fans would expect with a name like Megawheat. So join us as we forge ahead on a path that directly leads to the main stage…and then off the front of it, into the crowd!

If you feel the urge to smash the bottle afterward, don’t. That’s what guitars are for.

Grunt fill from Albertsons. Orange golden body, instant fluffy head, fades to clumpy skin. Big citrusy aroma, tons of hops. Floral notes. Beautiful and welcoming. Taste kicks in, oranges and tangerines, hoppy bitterness sneaks in at the end, Smooth, gently warming. All-around superb.

This whole quarantine/lockdown/fast cruise business has done wonders for me in terms of clearing out massive swaths of the backlog here at Chez Woody! This latest renewal of a long-standing love affair with Stone Brewing began with me simply pulling out a couple of CANs, but then it became like tugging on a pesky loose thread on a knit sweater. Soon, I was left facing a bundle of unraveled string in the form of a massive mess of Bottles (gasp!) & CANs! OMFG. Additionally, I am looking to clear out sister site Untappd's "Better Together" badge for drinking collaboration beers. This one will mark #490/500!

From the Bottle (!): "2017 Stone Collaborations"; "A thrashing of Motueka, Mosaic and Mandarina Bavaria hops"; "Rock Hard and Carry a Big Glass!"; "Independently brewed & produced by Stone, Marble & Odell"; "Kick back and crank it up - we’ve done all the brewing…the we being us and the special guest appearances of two heavy hitters in the indie craft beer industry: New Mexico’s Marble and Colorado’s Odell. I Pop!ped the cap & started a slow, gentle C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. I saw no reason to roil a bottle that they had admonished me NOT to sit on. I still got just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with very good retention for my troubles. Color was a gorgeous solid-Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was very fruity, mostly tropical with a hint of orange/tangerine citrusiness. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full with a pronounced slickness on the tongue. The taste had an unexpected spiciness to it, almost like black pepper, but that would be imprecise. It was definitely something more than simply tropical fruitiness, though. I could not put my finger directly on it, but think tropical fruits with a slight pepperiness and you'll be in the ballpark. Was this what they intended? Doubtful, but it goes to show that by not abusing a beer, it has a longer staying power than envisioned. Finish was nicely dry, more spicy than fruity. A really pleasant surprise! YMMV.

From the 22oz bottle
Firestone Walker Nonic glass

The pour is a semi-clear golden orange body with a frothy, sticky white head. Healthy lacing that gobs up in the glass. Smells of citrus hops and fruity wheat berry with some boozy spice. Getting lesser notes of pine with some tropical fruit and more citrus. This one is actually quite wheat-y in flavor with lots of spice hop notes. Some lesser notes of citrus, and topicals. More fruity malt esters to finish out with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel.
Its a nice brew but I would say drinks big and the spice dominates over the more nuanced citrus and tropical hop flavors.
Decent sipper but no thrasher as advertised. Actually has a tamed bitterness to it with some spicy booze.
Worth a go but I had higher hopes with Odell and Stone working together.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a mug glass.

A: The beer is a bright amber color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick but spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains piney hops, wheat, citrus and caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out with a strong burst of piney hops bitterness that is quickly followed by sweetness from flavors of citrus and caramel. The malt character is heavy and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly hoppy.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is a solid 2IPA to drink for a long time.

eyes...
2 fingers of craggy white head, the head shrinks back within minutes and remains as an O-ring on the edges of the glass, slightly cloudy orange hue, active bubble-ation (yeah I made that up), decent enough looking thing but not half as cool as the bottle

nose...
citrus-y effervescence, banana bread notes, other tropical tones float on by, like a hefe with more of a back end bite of hops

taste etc...
strangely the carbonation is rather absent from this in the mouth... I really think that would help here if it had that 'fluff' of a good hefe.. but what do I know?
medium mouthfeel, kind of subdued notes all around, this drinks like it sounds in theory, kind of an over hopped wheat with lots of trops hops notes, so like a wheat you get that 'soft' finish but then you get bitterness kind of mixed with that... hmmm ?

verdict?
not for me, I don't like the combinations here, the beer is well executed and has its merits but I am not sure this was a match made in heaven, or california for that matter. the lack of carbonation on the mouth really brought this down for me.
