Notes: Just as Patrick Henry once stood addressing the city of Richmond in 1775 to spur resistance against the tyrannical British Empire, 20 years ago we were stirred to join the cry for resistance against the tyrannical oppression of industrial beer. And now, the opening of our Richmond brewery is yet another shot in the salvo that has been fired on behalf of American brewing independence. If we wish to brew free, if we mean to retain our identity and preserve the privilege of access to independent craft beer, we must recognize it is a group effort. We do not stand alone. And so, on our new brewing grounds, we gathered with fellow craft breweries and “His Excellency,” Governor McAuliffe, to join together in force. A group cry of freedom & independence! Consider this aggressively hopped imperial stout, jam-packed with Virginia raspberries and blackberries, a testament to our passion and unwillingness to settle or sell out! We think Patrick Henry would be proud, and hope you will be too.

Pours a thick black with a thin brown head of foam. Small amounts of lacing. Nutty, tart smell but with apparent notes of coffee and chocolate. Taste also has strong notes of coffee but very apparent tart berry notes initially. Definitely get those blackberry hints and even what sort of comes off like hints of cranberry as well.. thoughts? Finishes with a very porter-like bitterness but a pleasant aftertaste that finished really nicely. A great beer from a great state! Glad I could get a hold of one out here in SoCal as well.

Bomber, 11-17-06 bottling date

Pours dark and stoutlike, leaves great looking fine sheeting all up and down the glass.

Milk chocolate nose and suble sweet blueberries.

Tasty, tasty , tasty with more milk chocolate, cafe au lait, and again a back note of berries....doubt I would pick up the berry note if they were not mentioned on the label...but it adds to the complexity and interest here..densly flavorful, smooth and with the alcohol well in check....nice be savored and enjoyed.....well worth a try

Deep, dark brown color where light doesn't shine through, even on the edges. Large beige head which settles slowly but completely.

A bit chalky on the nose. Not much stout-like aromas. I only catch some mocha.

The taste is very stout-like. Lots of burnt notes. The body is richer than most stouts. This is enhanced by the lower carbonation. The finish and aftertaste is coffee with cream. It comes across like a dry stout, flavorful and dry.

Appearance: Pours with quite an impressive bubble show; the espresso colored liquid lingers under three fingers of mocha head; excellent retention and more than a few shards of lace

Smell: Roasty, with unsweetened chocolate, black licorice and blackberry tones; piney hops are prominent, as well

Taste: Very roasty, at the outset, with chocolate and blackberry flavors building; piney hops take over in the middle, casting a bitter pall over the finish; licorice, roasted malt and blackberry underneath

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation

Overall: A Revolutionary War on the palate, the flavors here battle with one another and the outcome provides victory for none; interesting, but I wouldn't re-visit

A - Pitch black pour with a creamy roasted toffee colored layer of foam. The foam is sticky like cotton candy on the sides of the glass.

S - Dark roasted chocolate, some char, blackberry, a hint of alcohol.

T - The berry sweetness hits up front and lingers for most of the sip with dark roasted chocolate underneath, some dark chocolate bitterness, and towards the end the berry presence subsides as it ends with a pronounced bitter piney chocolate bite with some alcohol poking through. The char has

M - Full bodied, chewy, thick, and very dry on the finish.

O - The flavors all play quite nicely together. Enjoyed this beer.

S-rich chocolate and roasted malt with a slight berry tartness

T-roasted malt, dark chocolate, slight char, and a bit of a pine hop bitterness. Slight raspberry taste in the finish.

M-medium to full body and moderate carbonation

Overall a nice roasted stout with a slight raspberry tartness, overall flavors come together well

Bottle from East Derry
Solid black color with a huge frothy mocha head that persists. Berry and roast on the nose with bits of earth and a touch of ethanol. The flavor is chocolate covered berries up front some earthy light alcohol notes midway through and a bit of earth hop licorice and roasty bitterness to finish. Somewhat bitter finish clashes a little with the fruit and chocolate up front. Pretty good beer.

Pours pitch black, no light gets through this beer! My monster pour yields a full 6 finger head that takes 10 minutes to recede becoming chunky and leaving thick, sticky tannish/raspberry colored lacing.

Aroma is a bit metallic straight from the fridge, but the big head gives it time to dissipate as the beer warms. Big smoke from the glass. More fruity from the bottle, though. The char moderates as the beer warms and the berries vie for attention.

Wow! This beer is burnt! Just the barest taste of fruit at first, becoming well balanced with tart berry upfront followed by dark chocolate with woody undertones.

Rich and silky in feel with the bite of alcohol. Syrupy, but astringent, giving a drying effect in the end.

From one dimension--char, to multidimensional, this beer develops well. Great appearance and body

Had this on 2018-08-09 in Columbia, PA from a 220z bottle

A - Opaque dark brown with a 2-finger light brown head that sticks around leave great lace

S - Medium roasted grain, mocha, blackberry and to a lesser extent, raspberry.

T - Dark roasted grain, semi-sweet chocolate, lactose, maybe a hint of the berries but it's a stretch, significant char and hop bitterness, which lingers too long.

M - Full body and light carbonation. Creamy and acerbic

O - It's an OK Imperial Stout. From the description and aroma, I was hoping for more berry flavors and sweetness instead of the strong bitterness.

Poured a black body with little head that quickly died. The aroma is rather bland as just mostly roasted malts with hints of coffee beans in there. Strong, sturdy, stout-ish body with touches of minor sweetness underneath the roasted malts and touches of coffee. Dry, biting finish makes this a slow sipper.

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear jet black in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and faint dark cola brown highlights. The beer has a three finger tall dense foamy dark mocha head that slowly reduces to medium to large sized half finger thick cap in the center of the glass surrounded by a large patch of medium thick film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slightly stronger than moderate aromas of roasted + charred malts with light to moderate aromas of dark chocolate and light aromas of blackberries + raspberries. Light aromas of pine +earthy hops towards the finish

T: Upfront there are slightly stronger than moderate flavors of roasted + charred malts with moderate flavors of dark chocolate. That is followed by light to moderate flavors of slightly sweet, slightly tart raspberries + blackberries. Finally there is a moderate flavor of pine + earthy hops. There is a slightly stronger than moderate flavor of roasty bitterness that lingers well through the finish.

M: Medium to full bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: This is a pretty successful beer in my opinion, capturing the roasty/charred malts, chocolate, berries, and hops well. Alcohol is well hidden and this beer drinks much easier than the 9.5% ABV. I would definitely be interested in having this one again.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a coal black color and an opaque consistency. There was a small amount of tan-colored, foamy head that quickly dissipated. Fair lacing.

S: A pretty good aroma of raspberries, roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee.

T: The flavor is definitely dominated by the raspberries and blackberries, but not obnoxiously so. It has some dark chocolate, hints of coffee (not quite enough), roasted malt, vanilla, and dark fruit. A much more subtle flavor than what I expected, but tasty nevertheless.

F: A good amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Medium- to full-bodied.

O: For the most part, this is a likable, easy to drink beer. Drinkable.

Pours a deep ebony color with a tight, mocha head that leave chunks of lacing.

Smells of deep roasted malts and berries.

Tastes of the berries layered with roasted notes. Berries lead off with the raspberries but mostly blackberries. Malts add next with a bit of brown sugar and chocolate. Some drying bitterness comes next along with some pine and a bit of citrus. Finishes with some coffee.

Mouthfeel is medium with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a solid stout, but the berries don't do it for me.

From the 650 ml. bottle with a bottling date of 11/17/16. Sampled on January 13, 2017.

The pour is a handsome, dep dark brown to black color with a tremendous, foamy tan head that lingers on top.

The smell seemed to have something off about it. I certainly picked up some roasted dark malts, caramel, maybe a little coffee, and maybe a little alcohol. But there was this annoying sour milk thing going on too.

The body is creamy and full.

The off smell did not carry over to the flavor, which was quite delightful. Dark bread, dark roast, coffee, slight fruit, and a bit of an alcohol burn.
