Collaboration with Beavertown & Garage Project

Glorious-crank-it-to-‘11’-cacophony is what happens when intense tropical fruit gets a flashpot addition of pyrotechnic heat from habanero. The result is a literal world tour, as three globe-trotting breweries collaborated on this immensely thunderous soundstorm of a beer.

Masters of brewing Beavertown (UK) and Garage Project (New Zealand) worked with us in San Diego to brew this double IPA with a power trio of kiwi, yuzu and habanero. Yuzu and habanero, sure, but who knew kiwi fruit could be so metal. Add in a colossal hop character to ride the lightning of the subtle but fiery heat. Hops, fruit, heat…And Juiciness For All.

Call up your mosh mates, crank up the tunes, throw this beer in the fridge and chill ‘em all.

This whole quarantine/lockdown/fast cruise business has done wonders for me in terms of clearing out massive swaths of the backlog here at Chez Woody! This latest renewal of a long-standing love affair with Stone Brewing began with me simply pulling out a couple of CANs, but then it became like tugging on a pesky loose thread on a knit sweater. Soon, I was left facing a bundle of unraveled string in the form of a massive mess of Bottles (gasp!) & CANs! OMFG. Additionally, I am looking to close out sister site Untappd's "Better Together" badge for drinking collaboration beers. This one will mark #493/500! This is also my second of three spiced beers, the previous one being a CAN of Stone's 2018 Xocoveza.

From the Bottle (!): "2017 Stone Collaborations"; "Beavertown/Stone/Garage Project"; "Double India Pale Ale"; "A monster Double India Pale Ale with Yuzu, Kiwi & Habanero"; "A Tropical Double IPA with a death metal kick to the codpiece"; "A global collab from Stone, Beavertown & Garage Project"; "Careful now, you're holding liquid metal in your hands. I was getting more & more anxious to finally Pop! the cap on this one after a couple of fits & starts. Now, all was in readiness & I followed this with a slow, gentle C-Line pour into the awaiting glass. It responded in kind by forming just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, eggshell-white head with decent retention, hampered by its spices. Color was a gorgeous Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) with NE-quality clarity, prompting an impromptu visit from The Gelt Gang of Midas, Mammon & Croesus, all clamoring for a taste. Nose was spicy, but less so than that 2018 Xocoveza from earlier. Here, it was more subtle, tempered (at least) by the fruit, although the hops & malt may have also contributed to its subtlety. Mouthfeel was medium, but kind of light for an AIIPA. The taste was odd, spicy, but not in a hot way. The habaneros had definitely overtaken the fruits, but they were still working to keep things in check. Warming, I got a light sweetness that was undoubtedly the fruit, but I would not have been able to tell you which fruits had been utilized in the beer's production. Also, I am not even sure that I would have recognized them as tropical in origin. It was not that kind of fruity sweetness. Perhaps it was the hops … Finish was dry, spicy & pleasant without the burning that I experienced earlier. YMMV.

Grunt fill from Albertsons. Hazy orange amber pour with thick, fluffy head. Fruity, juicy aroma with a hint of hop resin. Taste continues with the juice, grapefruit and pineapple, with some nice mild dankness that pairs nicely with the citrusy notes. Sweet and smooth...and potent.

22 ounce bottle into a tulip snifter. Bottled 8/16/17, had 9/14/17.

Pours a somewhat cloudy yellow/orange, with a half inch head and soapy lacing. Aromas of grapefruit, orange, probably yuzu but wouldn’t really know for sure, apricot, some malt, light habaneros- more as it warms, light toffee. The taste starts with a different kind of citrus taste which I guess would be the yuzu, then grapefruit, orange, malt, caramel, some habaneros and kiwi, a decent hop bitterness throughout. Smooth, a solid medium body, well carbonated.

The flavors blend well, although I may not be the best at picking out kiwi, and the habaneros add flavor and aroma without adding heat. Well balanced between the hops and malt. Very enjoyable.
