Loral hops were released in 2016 and quickly became one of our favorite new varieties. It was highlighted in our Stone Hop Revolver single IPA series, and was the featured hop in our hugely popular 2017 summer seasonal beer: Stone Ghost Hammer IPA.
Then there's Dr. Rudi , which has been around since 1976. Originally known as Super Alpha, this hop brings classic resin and piney notes, which pair it perfectly with the floral citrusy aroma of Loral. Traditionalist GenX meets adventurous Millennial. What do they talk about? Nothing, hops don't talk. Together however, they speak. It's apparent that a pairing like this was bound to happen. At Stone, we call it inevitable.

How to follow up one of the most delightful, interesting & pleasant beers to have graced my palate in a long while? Open a palate-wrecking DIPA from Stone, of course! I am ramping up to tomorrow's NBS, but in the meantime, I have bottles chillin' like the villains that they are. I was recently mocked for my laser-focus on CANs, but since those have slowed to a trickle, playing catch-up with the backlog is a finite proposition. I'll blow out these bottles, dump the empties in the recycling bin & never even glance back.

I Pop!ped the cap & gave it a heavy-handed C-line pour that caused the immediate formation of two fingers' worth of soapy, foamy, rocky, eggshell-white head with modest retention that left decent lacing in it wake. Color was Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) & The Gelt Gang of Mammon, Midas & Croesus agreed as they came barreling in from my living room where they were watching tonight's PGH Pirates game on the telly. Nose was odd - boozy with notes of vanilla, pine resin, coconut, a perfume-y floweriness, freshly cut grass/hay & overripe peaches. Wow! Mouthfeel was medium, kind of thin for the style. The taste opened with a bourbon-like coconut & vanilla pair, but quickly raised with a piney, woody resinousness & I was close to folding. Jeez-O, man! Phew. How do you counter that kind of an opening? Man, this was just making me sweat! Warming, the pine resinousness really began to take over & I was simply stunned by its magnificence. This was a masterful blending of hops to create the sort of thing that I used to outright crave as a self-described, self-avowed hophead. Now, I consider this "chipping", just skin popping to keep my hand in when my sponsor isn't looking. Finish was dry, minty, very boozy & a pleasant surprise.

i love the idea of this, mixing an old and a new hop in a big ipa, but the execution is stone brewing to a fault, excessively bitter at the expense of nuance, and in this case its oddly sweet, even for a big ipa that needs the gravity spike, its downright sugary. golden even brassy in color, clear and shiny from the tap, pretty beer under a full inch of airy white head, nice looking stuff! honey thick too, this has some density for not being a hazy brew, but its also not that malty in nose or taste, must have added some dextrose or something to get it up this strong. i like loral a lot, almost savory to me at times, i know the rudi less but seem to get like a super noble vibe from it, in combination they are excellent, and thats the real win here, but this doesnt need to be this bitter, it covers up some of the coolest parts of the hops, and it should have been lower alcohol or else fermented drier, the residual sweetness is a distraction, and it heavies up on some of the more delicate hop properties. it has a weird drinkability for its size and relative intensity though, like with spicy food i cant set my glass down, oily and west coasty, delicious and well made, but the kind of off balanced i am used to from stone by now, annoying because this could be amazing, but i like the project of an old and a new hop together, and these two are a nice match!

Appearance - The beer is served a lightly hazed golden color with a small white head. The head fades relatively quickly leaving a nice sum of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell - The aroma is stongest of some dank grapefruit along with some smells of pine and other aromas of light stone fruits of peach and apricot. Along with these smells comes some light smells of herb and citrus hop.
Taste - The taste begins with a slightly light sweet taste of light fruits and citrus as well as a little bit of grain and bread. As the taste advances some flavors of a big pine and more citrus hop come to the tongue. In the end one is left with a clean and nicely hoped taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel - The body of the beer is slightly lighter for a big brew with a carbonation level that is moderate. Overall the feel was pretty good.
Overall- A tasty brew oversll, with a crisp feel, some lighter fruit tastes, and a decent hop hit. A rather fun one to try

The resinous Dr. Rudi overpowers the citrusy Loral to create an IPA that leans significantly West Coast. Better as it warms. Solid, pleasant hop bite.
