stone 10th bomber in a stone 10th pint glass. how "official".
second bottle of three as i thought the first was a bit young. not that a few months would do much to alter the taste of this bad boy. i just thought my taste buds needed the time to recover.
pours almost a syrup like consistency into the glass. glowing orange with little carbonation. the few bubbles that are there struggle to the surface causing a delayed reaction in forming any head. said head is a lightly tanned and pillowy in texture. several minutes pass to allow it to settle to a thin lace which leaves ample amounts of lacing.
aroma huh? for complexity its a 5 easy. seems like three different beers from the smell alone. double ipa, barleywine, and...you know...something else to make the review sound better.
first impression is alcohol. i seem to pick that up pretty easily in most beers though. concentrated citrusy hops. they seemed a bit stronger four months ago when i first tried it. overall much less hop aroma now. i remember picking up some pine as well, but not so much now.
taste still blows me away. just about the most powerful flavor of any beer ive tried. however...
strong bready malt to the point of, well being too strong and bready. not one of those double ipas with a lack of malt presence. this one has plenty there to balance most any other beer. yes...most any other.
stone beers normally dont lack for hops and this is no exception. serious bitterness to accompany the bready malt on the journey past the palate. hop flavor is right there as well coming in thick.
trouble is, alcohol is ever present playing stow away on this 747 of hops and malt. and thats one passenger this beer certainly doesnt need. the added baggage makes it cumbersome and awkward where it really needed a bit less weight.
and how thick is this beer?? not only does it pour slowly, mouthfeel is thick and slow (if that makes sense), and taste comes across heavy, as well as that other stuff above.
my first impression of this beer was one that was trying to be a barleywine and double ipa, but just couldnt decide. bitter and hoppy, but super strong too. and on the negative side way too sweet which i feel is its biggest infringement. im in no position to tell stone how to make beer, but this is my review and my soapbox so here goes:
cut back the abv, which seems like a gimmick, and drop the final gravity. its just a beer done to excess for the the sake of it. stone is better than that, and the competition is better than this.
thanks to my cousin and his wife for bringing a few of these down.

Pretty awesome ipa. Served in a tulip glass at The Porch in key west. Golden amber color, light foam, loads of lacing. Can definitely perceive the strong abv on the nose. But thats mixed with mangos and cherries. The taste from start to finish is perfected. Nothing harsh, and it drinks like a beer thats half the abv. I've always shyed away from high abv dipa's...but this changes my mind

Aroma is floral, citrus/fruit and creeping dank hops. The flavor is citrus, fruit, grapefruit, malts, hops/mild hop resin and a mix of bitter and warming alcohol in the finish.
