Notes / Commercial Description:
In 2006, Chris Carroll, a longtime member of Team Stone, took that adage literally, proposing that we produce a one-off version of our venerable Stone Smoked Porter made spicy from the addition of chipotle peppers. We gave it a shot and found that those smoked jalapeños melded quite naturally with the smoldery peat-smoked malt that gives the beer its flavor and moniker, creating a deep, roasty quaff with a carefully restrained tingle of tasteful capsaicin heat in the finish. The marriage of ingredients was so nice that it has become an annual summertime staple, released each May in honor of Carroll’s initial idea that Stone Smoked Porter w/Chipotle Peppers serve as an artisanal alternative to the industrialized adjunct-laden cerveza billed as the perfect fluid accompaniment to the sunny season. Cheers to variety and a quality alternative to mediocrity.

Poured from a 22 oz bomber bottle into a goblet.

L - Appears to be mahogany brown and opaque, but holding it up to light reveals it is a crystal clear dark brown with strong shades of red. Head is off-white. It piles high initially, then fades to a thin layer and scattering of large bubbles. Nice lacing on glass.

S - Strong grain and chocolate notes. Faint smoke in the nose. Very faint hops in the background. I don't detect the peppers.

T - Malt and smoke are almost instantly overcome by vegetal pepper flavor and strong heat. Later in the palate the flavor of roasted chipotle pepper is strong. The finish is dry and the smoke comes back at the end, with a final pepper burning at the back of the throat after the swallow.

F - Medium body. Medium carbonation. Strong hops bitterness that blends into significant heat from the hot peppers. Low alcohol presence.

O - I find this to be too one-dimensional, dominated by the pepper heat. I'd prefer more smoked porter and less chipotle pepper, but that is only my opinion.

Poured into a Stone balloon glass.

Look: As black as coffee with ruby coming through in the light. A cream colored head remains as a thick film after head recession. Light patches of foam remain for lacing.

Aroma: A rich fudge aroma blended with spicy, smokey dried out chipotle peppers.

Taste: Much like the aroma, there is a perfect mesh of roasted malts that bring out really nice chocolate-fudge flavors coated in a dried out chipotle spiciness. The finish has dark bitter coffee notes. As the beer warms, some smokiness emerges but it's subtle, and a nice touch.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, just about right for a porter, not too thick.

Overall: I really like this. The heat lingers. I appreciate a spicy beer.

Brewed in the style of an American Porter with chipotle peppers added. Available in 22 oz. bottles and on limited release draft as part of an annual release rotating series on Stone's Smoked Porter base recipe. Reviewed alongside Stone Smoked Porter for comparison.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a Stone Brewing Pint glass. Served above 56 degrees Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy cream head of a light tan complexion over a light cola brown body. Retention is good and lacing is light and spotty. 4

(Smell) The Smoked Porter base has aromas of chocolate, caramel bread and some delicate roast and a touch of smoked malt. The Chipotle variation adds to the base with soft roasted pepper character, somewhat robust, very faintly spicy in the aroma, a touch heavier than the smoked porter base's aroma. Potency is moderate. 3.5

(Taste) Chocolate malts, medium roast, soft caramel grains, moderately sweet. The chipotle peppers adds some moderate heat and compliments the subtle smokiness of this beer with smoky chile pepper flesh, culminating in an enjoyable, yet discernibly different variation of the popular Stone Brewing ale. Aside from the standard Smoked Porter recipe, I find I prefer this version as it is somewhat heavier bodied and more flavorful on the smoke and peat malt front; whether this is an illusion generated from the chile peppers or fact will vary based on your experience. The Chilies generate more flavor for this beer than heat, which is a move I greatly applaud. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) The texture is slick, silky smooth, moderately clean, medium dry. Carbonation is medium, generating a soft frothiness and a modestly crisp finish. The body is medium/heavy for the style, medium/heavy overall. Balance is very slightly roasty and earthy bitter over sweet. Alcohol presence is very low and there are no off characters. 3.75

(Overall) Stone's Chipotle Smoked Porter is an excellent variation on the standard Smoked Porter recipe and one I look forward to trying in the summers. If the price point for the Chipotle Pepper Smoked Porter variant was set as generously as the standard Smoked Porter recipe, then I would nearly have a beer that comes off as superior in nearly every way. It's not for everybody, but for me it does a great job with the Chipotle Pepper character. 3.75

A: Dark coppery-burgundy exit from the bottle sits a flat black in the vessel with golden micro-beads of carbonation steadily rising along the walls. Meaty, golden tan head is rigid and sturdy, 1+ inches high, while leaving thick stratified rings of lacing downward.

S: Softly roasted chipotle peppers, some sweetened toasted malt and fresh grapefruit hopping.

T: Fresh, juicy grapefruit and citrus juice first greets the tongue followed by a gentle warmth of chipotle peppers. Fresh cold coffee, floral hops, spicy corriander and smoky cypress. Sweet malt wtih a peppery flair when held.

M: Spicy, creamy medium bodied maltiness, good amount of carbonation with a mineral feel.

O: Like the balance here, freshness and hopping with the light dry nature of toasted chipotle peppers against a sweetly roasted porter malting that is light in character allowing the chipotle peppers to be better exposed and balanced. Nice lingering peppery spicing lasts awhile, is easy drinking, very enjoyable with a good smoked nature, hopping and balance.

Had this beer once on tap when it was chilled, tasted ok.

Had the same beer from a bottle at room temperature and it was phenomenal! The peppers come through much clearer when the beer is at room temperature. The pepper taste is nice, but not sinus clearing.
