Notes / Commercial Description:
With a beer as bold and robust as Stone Totalitarian Imperial Russian Stout, it’s not easy to build another level of flavor. That’s why we use hundreds of pounds of espresso beans to give Stone Espresso Totalitarian Imperial Russian Stout an added layer of rich complexity. The coffee flavors meld beautifully with the roasty bitterness of the dark malts for an intense complement of flavors, while staying true to the essence of this classic, historical style.

Pitch black and absorbs light like a black hole. Topped with a finger of rusty tan head.

Smells of banana, chocolate, coffee and a sweetness, really dessert like.

Tastes of chocolate, cocoa, espresso coffee. Coffee forward, smooth and creamy but not overly sweet.

Thick oily body with a light, foamy carbonation. Very smooth.

Excellent brew. I got this in Redding where I am drinking it April 14th, 2019.

Appearance: Black glass struggles to hold a thin collar of tan that gives a spot or two of lace.

Aroma: Pretty one dimensional, the coffee dimension. A little burnt barley comes through for a mild Stout nose.

Taste: Big malt sweetness cut by a coffee bitter, a few mild citric notes, a hint of chili pepper and chocolate.

Mouthfeel Heavy body, low carbonation, oily finish.

Overall: Monster, coffee monster. I like it. Sweet Russian Impy, coffee is strong but lets other flavors come through. Very tasty.

Pours a dark black hole of a beer no light getting through this bad boy nice fluffy two finger coc head stays forever and leaves gobs of lace. Damn fine looking stout.

Aroma is roasted malts and espresso or coffee not sure its super strong as in an espresso shot or anything. Might be more coffee then one would get of a big stout in and of itself. Dark roasted malts some light vanilla little dry smelling actually, not bad but not anything to go crazy over.

Taste roasted malts, defiantly more espresso in the flavor then came out in the nose, hints of dark fruits some lingering bitterness form the hops. Strange but seems or tastes a little watered down for a big stout might be a mouthfeel issue but the lack of body seems to effect the flavor for me some what. Finish is lingering espresso some light chocolate and hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel is weird sure don't seem like a big 10% stout to me, medium with what feels like a water pre finish? carbonation level is about medium.

Overall looks great but not as great as other Stone stout offerings not sure if its just me so try it for yourself.

Poured from a can into a tulip.

Pours a fairly viscous, absolutely opaque black with a dark tan mottled two-fingered head that hangs in pretty well for a high ABV, and excellent lacing. A little thin but solid.

The aroma is rather sweet for the style and rather weak, particularly with the word "espresso" in the name. Coffee aromas are there, but not terribly strong. Dark fruits and toasted malts very forward, No booze detected on the nose. Pleasing, simple, but subdued aroma.

A little more bitterness is delivered on the palate. However, like the nose, the flavor is quite reserved. Chocolate cake batter and medium coffee flavors augmented by touches of dark fruit and some noticeable (but not offputting) booze. The char and toasted notes are there, but again, not remarkable. Overall, the flavor is "RIS" in the abstract, but lacks clarity or identity. There is a "hollowness" between the initial toasted bitterness on the tip of the tongue and the booze at the finish that begs to be filled with something.

The mouthfeel is excellent. Good carbonation, and a nice drying finish to offset what is otherwise a somewhat sweet RIS. Not sticky in the least.

This is one of my favorite styles, so I can sometimes be tough. That said, it's one of my favorite styles, so if it hits the right notes, it will hit the jackpot with me. This is yet another in a recent run of "ho-hum" Stone offerings from my perspective. Stone Totalitarian is a bold flavorful RIS. This feels like a "mailed in" variation on a good beer, and is a shrinking violet for the most part.

L: Poured from a growler to a pint glass. Had a dark brown / black color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was a two inch, creamy, tan-colored, long-lasting head. Excellent lacing.

S: A so-so aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, espresso, caramel, and hops.

T: Tasted of a bit of caramel (could've used more), a lot of roasted malt (present throughout - a big component), some dark chocolate, a hint of hops, and an average amount of espresso. Kind of an uneven flavor here. I expected more of a shot of espresso (and chocolate), but it wasn't quite there. Still, it had a nice roasty quality to it.

F: A good amount of carbonation with a dry finish. Medium- to full-bodied.

O: A wildly uneven beer with some good qualities. Worth a try.
