Can't seem to find a date on this one. Poured into a pint. Enjoying this one due to a good friend reminding me of it (I was quite the beer novice when I had it the first time)!

A - A dark brown that looks similar to a light stout. Tan head with small bubbles. Good retention.

S - Piney hops up front with some sweet chocolate malts rounding it out.

T - Starts with the piney hops but quickly begin dissipation as a smooth chocolate malts takes over. A surprisingly smooth transition that ends with a bit of warmth from the ABV, which is hidden masterfully otherwise.

M - A light-medium body that has a consistency near water, which I believe could be a tad better, perhaps more viscous. Carbonation is mild and again I believe a slight improvement would benefit the beer. This said, it is an incredibly drinkable black ale at this ABV.

O - A good showing from Stone. I would not have any issues with enjoying one another day.

Pours dark, dark brown. A bit of a tan head and good, sticky lacing. Smells of hops! lots of hops! The hops give off a citrus and pine aroma. Can also smell a bit of roasted barley. The taste is great. Extremely hoppy, but there is also some malty sweetness. It is roasty, yet the hops give it a light and refreshing character. It's like stone's IPA, but black and roasted! It's great! medium body and carbonation.

A - Pours almost black, just barely opaque, with a creamy, thick brown three fingered head. As it slowly dissipates, a very substantial cap and sticky lacing remains.

S - Heavy pine with a lighter chocolate background. A bit of sweetness in the aroma.

T - Chocolate and pine, light at first, increasing on the swallow. A little coffee in there as well. Sweetness and bitterness nicely intertwine, lasting steadily into the aftertaste.

M - Medium-Heavy body with a decent amount of carbonation. Perfect for the style.

O - This is a very good beer, I can understand why they decided to brew it again. Nice flavors and aroma, and heavy on the bitterness as always for their stuff. Scent needs more than just pine though, it is very overwhelming. Definitely a beer I would get again if I was looking for something dark and bitter.

I poured a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance- Black color with a fingers worth of tan head. Fair amount of lacing.

Smell- Strong aroma of piney hops with notes of roasted malt.

Taste- I am hit with a bitter pine flavor at first that fades into a roasted malt and chocolate taste. Well balanced.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied with a decent amount of prickly carbonation. Dry finish.

Overall- Interesting beer but a little too bitter for my tastes. I still prefer a good stout or porter but this would be my first choice for an IPA (black or otherwise).
