Pours black in a snifter with off-white to very light tan head. Looks like a glass of coca-cola.

Smell is very bold hoppiness. Nice citrus smell (grapefruit). Little bit of chocolate presence in the smell as well.

Taste follows the smell pretty well. There is some toasted malt, caramel, chocolate and lots of citrus and hoppy bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. Medium bodied.

Overall this was very drinkable. I thought it had lots of character.

22oz bottle

A: Nice thick and frothy, khaki colored head that starts to fade over time, but leaves a thin head for the whole beer, very dark brown to black color, lots of nice lacing

S: Bit of hops up front, roasted malts, chocolates, good balance of smells, very pleasing

T: Very tasty, people who do not enjoy this beer style should not be reviewing this beer, tasty from start to finish, I can't say anything bad about the taste, almost a 4.75 if available

M: Maybe I just got a good batch? This is very good, good carbonation for over 8%, smooth and silky, very good mouthfeel

O: Great stuff, I'm kicking myself for not purchasing more bottles while having the opportunity when out of state

This is a peculiar Stone drink. Looking at it initially, it definitely lives up to its "Black Ale" by being as dark as any stout. I tilted it up to the light and got a dark amberish brown color. Smell is initially hops and something underneath, but I also got a lot of piney grapefruit in the background.

The taste is where I don't really agree with it. The hops don't quite mix well, because citrus-y sweet into a stouty-toast doesn't sit well to me. The initial taste is alright though, the hops are quite good...almost too much of the grapefruit comes up though, and when the bitterness comes up it doesn't quite balance it out.

The beer changes when it sits though. What was hops into bitter...actually became more malty as I drank it. After polishing off half the beer I poured in the rest of the bottle to top it off, and it didn't really go back to hop-sweet. I'm not sure why.

Overall, its not bad. Its not the best I've had from Stone, but its still a solid ale.

Served on tap at Idle Hands in New York, NY

A: Pours a very dark black with some garnet hints when held up to the light. There is a finger tall beige head that last throughout the entire beer - great head retention on this one. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Not as strong a nose as I expected after some of the other Stone beers, this beer had a decent amount of pine hops with subtler notes of roasted malts and caramel.

T: Dark roasted malts with a lot of pine hops in the flavor. Huge bitterness in the finish that is really enjoyable.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: I really like this one and I will have to get it again. Very sessionable and I enjoyed the flavors and the aroma.
