Rich and long black IPA, a delight.

Presentation: 22 oz brown capped bottle. Screen printed label with the gargoyle depicted in profile pushing out chest and blending the wings with the background of the brew name. Back offers a relatively typical tongue-in-cheek overblown narrative with the occasion of the brew, intent, and main characteristics. Shows 8.7% Alc. by Vol. Served in a tulip glass.

A - Black pour with a rich brown creamy head, fair retention, surface memory and good lacing.

S - Nice nose with a rich resinous hoppy sense throughout over roasted malty notes.

T - Nice roasted flavors, dashes of chocolate and coffee, flowing under a long range of resin and a pine hoppiness. Slight herbal touch….

M - Medium-full body, with medium carbonation, nice smooth flow with a lingering bitter touch in the finish.

O - Rich offering in the form of a black IPA, well worth the try.

Notes: I´m simplifying and probably need to do a side by side taste, It reminds me quite a bit of their anniversary ale with a softer edge, not meaning that this one is short of character, quite the contrary. Regretting the times I overlooked it, that is for sure. This is a really nice brew.

This is sort of a lesser cousin to the Stone 15th Black Ale. That said, it can't be faulted at all; it offers more drinkability than the 15th, and somewhat less of a medicinal aspect. What can I say, I love both. Stone has defined Black IPA, in all its contradiction as a term, they bring the intense hop and roasted malt together perfectly in both cases. I had the 15th when it was just a week or so old, and I have never experienced such a fresh hop blast. Again, this is similar, but less hi-test and in your face. But not much, at all. I'm glad this is becoming a regular offering. Herbal hops with a touch of a medicinal aspect, which is rare and appreciated. Kick ass brew from a kick ass brewer. Get it if you can handle it.

Picked up a bottle at Bottle Shop on Lower Greenville.

A: Dark black with a tinge of red around the edges when held to the light. Mocha brown head. Head retention was pretty amazing. More on that later.

S: chocolate malt, dark roasted malt, grapefruit, big grassy hops, citrusy hops, spicy hops, all kinds of hops. malt on malt on malt.

T: Thick mouthcoating waves of malt yet very dry. Malt flavors tempered by citrusy bitter hops all over the tongue. Very hoppy, but not very spicy like the nose would lead you to believe.
This is one of the cleanest tasting beers I've ever tried. I let it open up for a while and the initial onslaught of hops and rich malt was blinding, once this breathed a little bit, it was greatly subdued and balanced.

M: Smooth, but with a good deal of snappy carbonation.

O: I let this beer rest for about three hours and when i came back, there was still head floating on top of it, and lacing all the way down the glass.

Another great offering from Stone. This might become a standard in my collection.

Great looking Black Ale, one of the best Black IPA's I have ever had. Stone had a tap takeover at one of the local bars and this was my favorite of the 6 featured beers. It has fantastic hoppy notes with a bitter/malty finish. High alcohol content does not pull through in the flavor. I would love to enjoy this every day!

Poured into a Shiner Bohemian Black Lager pint and this brew poured up a midnight brown color with a 1 finger light tan head with nice heavy lacing clinging to the glass.

The aroma is of dark malts and heavy American hops.

The taste is heavy of the roasted malts, with a nice dose of bittering hops that are not overpowering, but cut through the malt sweetness perfectly. A nice balance of malt and hops, neither one dominating the other.

At 8.7% abv., the alcohol is well hidden both in the mouth and in the throat by this well balanced ale.

This is a great cold weather sipper to me. It might be a great brew any other time of the year, but for me, now; it is the 1st week of December.

I'll give this left coast brew a hard fought but well deserved A !
