22 picked up today at the Coop for about $6.80... poured into my shaped Sam Adams glass.

The pour was beautiful with a pretty reverse cascade thing going on.. 2 finger head is very dark brown.. even for a big stout... brew is very very dark... no light escapes... nice lacing.. dries leaving crusty bubbles.

Aroma is deep.. coffee and chocolate... smell improves immensely as it warms.. melted dark chocolate and cocoa nibs... yummy... even smells smooth and creamy... somewhat more stout characteristics appear than the expected chocolate.

Flavor is huge... I honestly was not expecting something this rich... The bitterness is also huge.. but it's not a hop bitterness.. more of an astringent (not in a bad way) cocoa presence... like a strong espresso with a couple squares of Hershey's dark melted and mixed in. Yeasty fruitiness raises its head slightly above water as it warms up a bit.. a little bit of dried cherry but still subdued and buried by the roasty/chocolate characteristics... a little bit black licorice note is barely distinguishable... mouthfeel is fairly thick but not chewy.. I like it.. very very smooth and coating... Despite reservations, I am leaving the drinkability fairly high not because I want another glass, but because I want another sip and I want "this" glass to last.

I don't know how this will age.. but I am going to pick up my share for the cellar and then drink these often until they're gone... really a very very good brew.. that said, I really hope the hop shortage is gone by next spring/summer.... I hope Stone comes out swinging with a massive triple IPA.

Pours and looks like used 10-40W motor oil, promising.

Light proof black beer with a small brown head, oh yeah it's not a porter.

Bittersweet scent that you can smell from a distance. Getting up close this is a boozy bittersweet chocolate beer with a hint of vanilla, berries and wood. Strongly scented with chocolate almost a dark chocolate bar in beer form.

Taste starts out sweet and chocolate with a silky mouth feel a lot like melted chocolate. A little sweet and a little bitter with a trace of coffee and malt char in the flavor. Big vanilla flavor so I suspect white oak or Bourbon was involved somehow. British Ale fruity flavors show as the beer warms up quite a bit. Alcohol completely hidden.

Mouthfeel is silk.

Don't give many 5s but this beer deserves it for drinkability. At room temperature and this just keeps getting tastier! Smooth as sin, really close to drinking expensive chocolate instead of eating it. Think best chocolate beer ever.

22 oz. bomber picked up today,

A: Pours black, with a medium dark brown head, giving it an extra .5 since it's probably the darkest beer I have ever seen.

S: Chocolate of course, some espresso, malted milk balls.

T: Lots of bitter dark chocolate bombards the taste buds on the first sip, heavy cacao. No real coffee note, except for some light espresso note in the middle. Sweetness of the oatmeal comes afterwards and mellows the flavour. I might have expected a little more complexity, but it's still damn tasty brew.

M: Carbonation is very light and fluffy, body feels to light for a 9.2% brew, but quite drinkable for its heft.

D: This is a good big stout from Stone, probably the most drinkable of the anniversaries that I have had, though 9th would be close. Definitely will pick up some more bottles while it is out.

This is an updated review with a fresh bottle, the previous bottle was well past its prime.

A - Oil black color with light lacing.

S - Dark roasted chocolate malt with some hits of smokiness and light char.

T - Deep dark chocolate roast with some smokey char and a lingering bitter dark chocolate finish.

M - Oily slick mouth feel. Heavy and full bodied.

O - This is a solid stout and glad Stone brought this one back.

I got this bottle in a trade with russpowell. Thanks Russ!

This pours a pitch black with a 1 finger head of tan foam. Head retention is so-so and there's very little lacing.

The smell has a good bitter chocolate nose...surprise! Oh, I also get some notes of coffee, roasted malt, and a slight citrus hop smell and quite a bit of alcohol.

The taste has a big dark chocolate bitterness up front followed by some roasted malt, coffee, good dark fruit, and some hop bitterness. Some alcohol peeks its way through as well giving me some warming.

It has a fullish mouthfeel making it silky smooth, the carbonation is on the light side of medium, and it finishes with a nice oatmeal taste that brings some dryness...pretty drinkable and tasty but...I don't think I'd seek it out again. Like they said in the "old" days, it just doesn't turn my crank. Try some and see what you think,

22oz. bottle poured into a snifter. July 2008 release.

(A)- Pours incredibly thick and black as the darkest night. Produced a sienna, almost dark brown head that reduced down to bubbles.

(S)- Mountains of nutty roastedness with vanilla. Lots of brown sugar in this guy. Hints of creamy oatmeal & dark cocoa. Breakfast, yet dessert smells galore. Very much like burnt french toast(with cinnamon) with melted dark chocolate & sprinkled brown sugar on top with a cup of coffee on the side!

(T)- Velvet-like roasted malts of molasses, cocoa, coffee, & toast. Definitely more subtle yet more profound than the aroma led me to believe. Creamy oatmeal rolls off your tongue into dense roasted coffee with molasses & dark, almost bitter cocoa. I still taste it minutes after each sip.

(M)- Smooth as a baby's bottom! Has enough carbonation in it yet. Creamy & so damn smooth that it just rolls of the tongue & down the throat. Has just a tiny bit of heat from the 9.2%abv, but barely noticeable behind the silky malts & light sweetness. If I could give the mouthfeel a higher score I would. One of the smoothest stouts I have ever experienced, but I am sure the age helped in that regard.

(D)- An awesome beer that has obviously aged to near perfection in a glass. It has everything that makes a good stout. Awesome roasted malts with a light sweetness rolled into perhaps the smoothest drinking stout I have ever had. If you have this in your cellar, now is the time to open & enjoy it!

22oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

A- Pours a pitch black color with a nice tan colored head with good retention and lacing.

S- The aroma is dark roasted malts, bitter chocolate, hints of roasted coffee and alcohol. The smell lets me know this is going to be a big beer.

T- The taste is starts out very smooth and creamy from the mouthfeel with some of roasted malts quickly followed by a nice bitter finish.

M- The mouthfeel is silky smooth from the oatmeal with a moderate amount of carbonation. Oh so smooth and creamy, very nice!

D- Very good stuff, and not too boozy for a 9% beer even though you can feel the warmth.

Overall, the Stone 12th Anniversary brew is another kick ass beer from Stone that is recommended. It will be interesting to see how well this one ages. Give this some time to age a little and I think that it will be phenomenal in a few years.

Poured from a 22oz. bottle into a tulip glass.

A - Pours beautiful pitch black with low carbonation.

S - A molasses aroma dominants all other smells. There are subtle cocoa notes that arrive late during inhalation.

T - Very bold, almost invasive, alcohol during the initial phase of tasting. The middle of the taste has a funky, indistinguishable taste for my palate. The finish has a subtle, but nice, oatmeal favor.

M - Creamy and light for this style.

D - Great for an extremely, BITTERLY cold New England winter day. Drinkability only suffers because of the intense alcohol notes.

Pours pitch black and completely opaque with a 2 finger frothy chocolate/coffee-colored head that slowly settles into a lasting cap that leaves chunks of lacing behind.

Bitter dark chocolate aroma with lots of roasted/toasted malt notes, oatmeal, roasted coffee bean and candy sugar. There is a lot going on here and hopefully the flavor lives up to the aroma.

Deep roasted full body with lots of sweet bitter dark chocolate, roasted coffee bean, oatmeal, burnt toast and toffee. All of this dark roasty character is nicely balanced by the sweetness of the dark chocolate and a bit of candy sugar. There is also a slight dark fruit presence and a subtle nut character. Very well balanced with well masked alcohol make this complex beer pretty drinkable. Recommended!

Had on tap at JJ Brewskys along with my Old Viscosity, Saucerful of Merkin.
I previusly rated the bottle and now the tap. It came to me in a pint glass, ddep brown in the light as I sat outside, very small tan head to this brew. Nose was hot, cocoa and oats. Taste was a bit smoother than the bottle but this beer is still to hot and it masks the great flavor hiding in it. Mouthfeel was chocolatey and too boozy for me. Almost a pain more than a pleasure to drink.

Served in 16oz goblet. Poured black, no light shows through, with a thick, medium brown head that dissipated quickly and left lots of sticky lacing.

A pleasant blend of aromas on the nose, coffee, roasted malt and certain earthiness I couldn't quite place being most noticeable. The flavors followed the aromas closely, with the coffee being most upfront, then the rest of tastes rolling across the tongue. No noticeable chocolate flavors remain, and there is just a minimum of hoppiness.

The body and drinkability were average for a big stout. Full body that coats the tongue and lingers. Nicely drinkable for a big beer, I can't see having more than one at a sitting though, worth trying now that it's sat a year. If I remember correctly, I liked this beer better when it was fresh. Certainly worth trying again if you see it.

Purchased from a very good Britain-based beer shop, "Beers of Europe", through on-line order. Coming in a light brown, 1 Pt. 6Fl. Oz. bomber bottle, bottled in July 2008, served cool in Hapkin's branded bulb-shaped sniffer.

A: pours the darkest (blackest) colour I've seen for any stout, topped with a dark brown creamy froth that retains the body elegantly, with uneven lacing behind.
S: aromatic without being imposing, the nose is full of vanilla-scented chocolates, sweet black dates, "breezy" fragrant US hops, licorice, sweet ground nuts, and faint alc. In some ways tis not as complex as Stone IRS, and slightly sweeter as well due to the chocolates I'm sure, but overall still promising and pleasant.
T: the lubricating-ly smooth foretaste of semi-sweet chocolate-milk-like maltiness expands with a lovely aromatic undertone mixed of roasted walnuts, black dates, oily-flowery hops, then the impact of bitter chocolates and hops deepens with a lively bitter, semi-chewy and herbal mouthfeel in the end, as well as a residual vanilla scent, roastiness and a key tinge of sourness as of truly bitter chocolates (90%?) rather than coffee beans. Unlike one's usual American hoppy ales, the bitter finish here is attributed more to chocolates than to hops, and this has already been anticipated since I had a glance of the beer's name.
M&D: lubricating on the mouthfeel with only mild carbonation, the palate is absolutely spot'on for such a potent stout to be enjoyed. Full-bodied, richly-flavoured, showing a light hint of alc., while on the whole a delicate balance is still retained b/w the heavy maltiness and lighter hoppiness thanks to the intervention of chocolate aroma and its indispensable sour tinge. Using bitter chocolates is a good idea, I think, to render a different type of bitter and sour elements on top of the overall decent performance of a quality dark ale.

22oz bottle from Capone's

A - Rich, dark as night and oily in appearance. Thin brown head disapears quickly and leaves a little bit of lacing.

S - Dark chcocolate, dark roasted malts and hops. A little astringent alcohol note. Maybe some dark fruits.

T - Bitter unsweetened cocoa. A little astringent alcohol bite at the end. The bitterness and the astringent taste get in the way of a very good initial sip. A little dark fruit perhaps.

M - Smooth, rich and creamy.

D - Between the bitterness and the booziness, this beer is a special occasion sipper. Maybe sitting a year didnt help this one, but the amazing initial taste keeps this still a beer worth trying.

A- This beer pours a jet black body with a few tiny bubbles stuck to the edge of the glass. There is a sticky chocolate mile colored head that last and last.

S- The deep coffee roasted malt aroma has a slight cream smell to it with a faint coco powder hint when it is pretty warm.

T- The big roasted black malt flavor is inky with a faint tartness that becomes more earthy like oatmeal as the beer warms. There is a slight vinous note at the finish with a black roasted grain bitterness that is smooth but lingers. As the beer warms the tartness grows and the chocolate notes start to fill the finish.

M- The medium-full mouthfeel is almost slippery in texture with a fusel alcohol heat that is soon overpowered by flavor as the beer warms.

D- This is a big black stout with nice flavor but the chocolate is note very distinct until the beer warms a good amount.

22 ounce bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch and a half frothy brown head. Head retention is good, lacing is excellent. The aroma is impressive, it smells like roasted malt, semi-sweet chocolate, coffee, oats, caramel and some dark fruit. The taste is similar to the aroma, it tastes like semi-sweet chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, oats, caramel and molasses. Mouthfeel/body is full, it's creamy, a bit oily and very, very smooth. Drinkability is very good too, it goes down very easy and the alcohol isn't very noticable at all. Overall I think this is a very good beer. I'll definitely have to pick up some more of this!

A 650 mL bottle purchased at Joseph's Beverage in Toledo, OH.

A: The stout is rather viscous, thick and oily as it pours into my snifter. A coffee-and-cream colored head, darkened a bit by milk chocolate brown, rises up on pour and quickly dissapates.

S: The nose is very chocolatey, thick with a strong burnt presence. A deep nutty aroma mixes with alcohol and syrupy chocolate to create a rich complexity.

T: At room temperature, the stout is a mouthfull. Dark roasted notes go head-to-head with dark chocolate. Cocoa powder and fuller baker's chocolate round out the flavor. Dark espresso, think Starbucks-level bitterness, coats the back of the mouth, full, dark and delicious. The oatmeal creates a smoothness just before the espresso turns bitter. Coffee and baker's chocolate are the finish.

M: The ale is complex, hot and boozy with a coffee/chocolate punch. The beer is a mouthfull, a challenge to get through.

D: One bomber at a time, the strength and intrigue of the beer won't allow any more.

22oz bottle poured into a mug

Appears just about pitch black with a brown two finger head that had good staying power and decent lacing.

Smell is of bittersweet dark chocolate, oats, roasted malts, and mild espresso.

Taste mimics the smell in almost a perfect balance. Bitter chocolate and burnt/roasted malts.

Full body, rich and velvety. Silky smooth.

Very easy to drink. This guy was great to hang out with and break in the college football season.

22oz bottle split with my roommate. It's his birthday and I'll be nice

A: Jet black with a dark brown head that recedes slowly to a disk and over 30 minutes, a ring. Almost black highlights

S: Bitter chocolate, mild sweetness that's creamy in nature, mild plum/raisin-like fruitiness. Not a whole lot but still very appealing

T: If there was a truth in advertising award for beer, this would be a definite contender. Bitter chocolate oatmeal stout, you say? Well, that's what you get. Starts off with a plenty of bitter chocolate and ton of oatmeal smoothness. I know that's a description of feel but when feel makes its presence felt this much, it's almost an apt flavor descriptor. Unfortunately, there's a good deal of alcohol heat in this, especially as it warms up. Fizzles out on the finish with a mildly bitter finish

M: Ridiculously smooth and the rather low carbonation enhances that but the alcohol heat is waaaay too noticeable.

D: No trouble drinking this but in a year, I won't be sharing this
