A California-style IPA with a Belgian twist
AKA Stone Cali-België IPA
First Release:
September 2008
Stone Cali-Belgique IPA features a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is the simply delicious Stone IPA. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds banana and spice notes to the hoppy brightness of our flagship IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

Copenhagen 19/2 2017. 33 cl can from Meny, Østerfælled Torv, Kbh Ø. Happy lil’ devil gulping beer on the can together with information that this beer should be regarded as the Evil Twin to the normal Stone IPA where this off-shot was raised in Belgium.
Pours slightly hazy golden yellow with white head. Settles as fine thin layer of foam. No lacing.
Aroma of sweet caramel, fermented fruit, light fruity tartness reminding me of gooseberries and currant.
Soft carbonation and medium thick texture.
Flavor is medium sweet followed by medium to heavy bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter and lingering. Dry finish.
More a Belgian than IPA but certainly drinkable when you get around this fact.

Pours a deep gold like a Duvel with good head and lots of lacing, like a belgian. The smell is a little hot with funk and hops. The taste is very fascinating: funk, horseblanket, grass, bittering hops with some UFFs (Unidentified fruit flavors) present, maybe some lemon. It’s a a tongue bruiser, but the belgian influence is very there, also. I’m probably a one or the other guy but it’s fun to try and it’s very vibrant from the tap here at Stone Brewing, Liberty Station Bistro, cheers!

Stone Cali-Belgique IPA, 6.9%, poured from a bomber into glass
March 2015
L: Golden yellow, thick head, lots of lacing, few bubbles arising
S: Smells Belgian of course, loads of funky spices, strong yeast smell, sweet grapefruit.
T: Grapefruit foremost, citrus rind, and the yeast that was on the load. Bitterness and yeast then leads to sweet malty body and bread. Finishes with that citrus and yeast, with a little lingering banana.
F: Fresh, medium bodied, plenty of carbonation.
O: I liked this. An interesting Stone ale with Belgian yeast making a unique hybrid of sorts.
