Notes / Commercial Description:
A California-style IPA with a Belgian twist
AKA Stone Cali-Belgiƫ IPA
First Release:
September 2008

Stone Cali-Belgique IPA features a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is the simply delicious Stone IPA. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds banana and spice notes to the hoppy brightness of our flagship IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

Appearance is slightly golden colored body with a deccent half finger white foamy head; decent amount of lacing left in the wake; carbonation is seen rising at a somewhat fast pace (bubbly - maybe sort of); aroma has strong Belgian yeastiness up front that ends up getting somewhat balanced through the hops that are added; taste is a balancing act of Belgian yeast to the hops - wow, really like how that is done; somewhat of a sweet yeasty aftertaste and a dry yeasty finish; easy on the palate - maybe, somewhat; overall, wow, a very well done beer that I would have again.

Brewed in Berlin.

T: Dry. An immediate hit of Belgian medicinal phenolics. Otherwise incredibly earthy, but unlike pretty much every American IPA I've had there's no thwack of orange marmalade or mango. None at all, just some lemonade in the finish. Not complaining. In the aftertaste a fair bit of that medicinal quality. Very toasty and nicely bitter.
O: Bloody love the toasty/earthy character but overall it's no masterpiece.

Can, Tesco, Berlin brewed

Pours clear golden with a nice head

fairly muted aroma, slightly phenolic with some mandarins and citrus

Spicy belgian yeast flavour gives way to more tangerines and some pith. Light body, medium carb, medium bitter finish, drying.

Doesn't really hit the mark imo, it's neither one nor the other and the two parts jar

And at 6.9% it delivers too little for its strength

Good combination of Belgian yeasts and California hops. Taste is dominated by hop bitterness. An unique IPA. Floral, citrusy, fruity and yeasty. Medium bodied.
