Notes / Commercial Description:
A California-style IPA with a Belgian twist
AKA Stone Cali-België IPA
First Release:
September 2008

Stone Cali-Belgique IPA features a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is the simply delicious Stone IPA. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds banana and spice notes to the hoppy brightness of our flagship IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

Pours a clear golden color with a nice one finger head. Enjoy By 9/2/13, enjoyed a month early. Aroma is unmistakeable Belgian yeast, dry, with a hint of fruity hops, mango, pear, apple. Flavor is dry yeast and light apple and pear flavors. Tiny bit of grass from the hops. This seems really more like a dry Tripel with nearly no influence from the IPA portion. High carbonation and light mouthfeel. Overall not bad but was hoping for more IPA influence.

Poured from a brown 22 oz. bottle. Has a deep golden color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of yeast, a bit fruity. Taste is citrus, yeast, hoppy but not bitter, more fruits, complex and tasty, well done. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall this beer is worth a try.

"There is of course the implicitly posed question of what exactly the Belgian/Belgique /België influence is. And 'yeast' is the answer. We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that illuminates a fascinating new aspect that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA. The result is both completely new and different, while still being recognizable as a Stone brew-and stone IPA in particular. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally." Brewed in the style of a Belgian IPA. This is a year-round release by Stone Brewing Company, a Belgian-yeast influenced version of their Stone IPA, if you didn't get that already. My bottle actually says Cali-België, but the name change has not been noted as of yet on the website, it is recognized as the same beer.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to my Stone pint glass. Served north of 56º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy pale-white head over a pale amber honey body with a mild haze and subtle carbonation. Retention is average, lacing is very light, spotty and doesn't stick. 3.5

(Smell) Aromas of grapefruit, citrus peel, a pale cracker malt base and a very forward yeast influence, tones of strong fruit notes including pear, apples and a fainter banana. Traces of spice are limited to a faint coriander. The change in yeast makes this beer a completely different aromatic experience. 4

(Taste) Pale cracker malts, faint citrus zest and a mellow earthy bitterness, accentuated by a moderately dry, peppery and clove-laden yeast profile. I found the flavor better rounded and balanced out over the aroma. 4.25

(Mouthfeel) Texture is smooth, with a mild slickness to it. Carbonation adds a touch of creaminess and crispness. Body is medium+ for the style, medium overall. Alcohol presence is mild. 4

(Overall) Stone's Cali-België IPA is an enjoyable take on their IPA recipe with a tasty Belgian influence. It took my palate a while to adjust but I found the drink thoroughly enjoyable. 4
