Notes / Commercial Description:
A California-style IPA with a Belgian twist
AKA Stone Cali-Belgiƫ IPA
First Release:
September 2008

Stone Cali-Belgique IPA features a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is the simply delicious Stone IPA. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds banana and spice notes to the hoppy brightness of our flagship IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

The beer poured a golden color with a fluffy white head. The Belgian yeast made its presence known in the aroma with hints of clove and bubblegum. The taste was very dynamic. You could taste the Stone IPA base with its hoppy profile and bitterness. The Belgian Yeast gave it a subtle tang that boosted the flavor without being overwhelming. The Cali-Belgique was a nice twist on the Stone IPA and one of the best Belgian Style IPAs I have tried as the yeast was a nice compliment to the beer rather than overpowering it. This was another well crafted brew from the brewers at Stone.

Pours cloudy and orange with hues of gold. Had a finger of pearly white foam that fell slowly and left a film and ring on top and some nice sticky lace.

Nose is a big blast of citrus fruits. Orange, tangerine, lemon and grapefruit. Then it develops tropical notes with a little kiwi fruit. Has a combination of fruits scent that is like a nice sweet punch. Lightly bready malt with a little honey on it. There is no alcohol on the nose. The belgian yeast is lightly underneath soft and quiet. The malt sweetens deeply as it warms and starts to lean toward caramel. Grassy.

Taste is wonderful. Nice sweet bread. Soft and yielding to all the fruit. Plenty of sweet fruits roll through and it has a nice little yeasty twang. Nothing much in the way of spice. No clove and that's a good thing because that would have been too dark for all the light tropical taste. Alcohol stays hidden on the palate. Has the taste of crushed aspirin. Many beers have it and in most it is sharp and very astringent. But in this beer that quality is laid into the body of the beer and it's not terribly sharp. The hop bitter bites a little and then accumulates so that together with the aspirin quality it finishes dry. That mouth coating aspirin like dryness accentuates the sweetness of the bread and is a perfect contrast to all the delectable fruits so that it finishes whole and spectacularly.

This is a tremendous IPA from Stone. it's not feather light but the malt is soft and graceful. The fruits are just so many and so splendid int he drink. It's complex and it's complex in the finish. Not too many beers can say that. Smooth, creamy and completely delicious. You could drink this one every day.
