Notes / Commercial Description:
A California-style IPA with a Belgian twist
AKA Stone Cali-Belgiƫ IPA
First Release:
September 2008

Stone Cali-Belgique IPA features a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is the simply delicious Stone IPA. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds banana and spice notes to the hoppy brightness of our flagship IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

Bottled 22 oz bomber served in a pint glass

A - Clear light golden with off white 2 finger head with great lacing and poor head retention.

S - Banana esters, wheat, lemon, coriander spice

T - A full palate adventure that starts with a bit of malt sweetness and wheat then followed with spicy coriander and a little sour citrus and finish with a dry balanced bitterness.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation

O - I really enjoyed it, not my favorite of Stone, but their beers are so fricken good. This one just isn't a standout among the greats, but still a quality beer.

Had this both on-tap and in the bottle. The tap wins.

A - Clear orange-yellow, good carbonation. Just what I like in my belgian-style IPAs.

S - Orange and grapefruit steeds with hops at the reins.

T - Kinda like the smell, minus horse flavor. Citrus fruits, twangs of lemon with heavier hits from orange and grapefruit. Hops aren't so heavy, but duke rather duke it out with the fruits, and pulls away from the 3 vs 1 as victor. A nice struggle and great flavor profile. Me like. A lot.

M - Clean. Pure. Crisp. Drying, leaving your tongue begging for more.

O - Great stuff here, a fantasic american take on a belgian take on an IPA. Yeah, you read that right. Get a glass.

22oz bottle read best by 2/2/12. I just barely made it.

pours a clear gold with a metallic shine and a decent amount of rocky head. Sweet, rich caramel greet the nose first followed by a mild yeast spiciness - allspice and pepper. Green, tart hop aroma come as the beer warms. Sweet caramel leads to spicy lemon pepper. Turns tart and bitter as the yeast eases you into a hop bitterness. A smooth transition. This was less viscous than expected from the nose, but more on the heavy side for an IPA. Dry finish.

This was really interesting and very polarizing, I'd guess. The yeast was very americanized, in that it wasn't very robust in flavor. It was mildly spicy and funky, but I didn't get anything in the middle of the spectrum. This combined with the typical Stone "in your face" hop profile made it a beer of extremes. The malt was not the central point, although it complimented the beer when necessary. I like the aspects it showcased, but felt it was a bit thin in the flavor profile, leaning too much on the extremes of taste and smell.

On tap at Stone prior to enjoying a fantastic dinner. The beer arrives a yellowish golden color with a nice 2 finger creamy white head. Decent retention and some lacing. The nose is a mix of orange fruitiness together with a granny smith sweetness, together with the bubble gum yeast character. A faint hint of peppery spices. Nice aroma. The flavor follows suit: Citrus upfront, orange, grapefruit together with some apple and pear flavors. The spiciness found in the nose follows, though mellow. Medium bitterness. Very smooth. Finishes with a lingering bubble gum fruitiness. Nice. Lighter bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Dry. Overall, one of the better Belgian IPA's I've had. I'd recommend.

this one was just ok for me. im starting to get into the belgian ipa thing but lagunitas little sumpin wild is alot better. maybe this bottle little old the hops are not the usual stone in your face, the bubblegum flavor not as tasty here, too refined. pass on this one.

I had the Cali-Belgique in a tulip glass.

Appearance- This copper body has very attractive pineapple -meat highlights. The impressive foam is two-fingers in width with a white hue that dies slowly to a ring.

Smell- The Belgian qualities are certainly apparent: peppery, musty, and an herbal spiciness that reminds me of coriander. There is only a slight orange and passion fruit citrus quality to this nose. And, unfortunately, a little bit of skunk.

Taste- It starts to turn for the worse here. The skunk was handled on the nose because enough of the Belgian and citrus qualities were evident. Here, however, the skunk really pierces through and also imparts a band-aid, phenol character.

The earthy yeast is not as spicy, and there is only the softest impression of passion fruit. The bitterness certainly is not strong with this beer, but hits the palate just enough.

Mouth feel- It would be nice if this had a slightly bigger body, as it stands, it is a medium to light affair. Maybe a touch under carbonated with how slick it slides over the tongue.

Overall- This Belgian IPA could have stood to have flavors that meshed a little better in the end. The belgian yeast did not compliment the IPA flavors very well. And to top it off, the feel was just a little too light and under carbonated to help.

The off putting phenols and skunk in the nose really sealed this beers fate in the end, however, I do not know how much better this drink would have been with them taken out of the equation.

Builds two fingers of fluffy white head that leaves dense rings on the Unibroue tulip glass as it recedes to a blanket over a dark, honey amber beer. Lightly hazed with moderate carbonation.

Big, fresh hops of grapefruit and pine forest. Light scenting of mint follows. This offering from Stone may lack complexity, but is exquisite nonetheless.

The flavors are as expected from the nose, though less bold, with moderate bitterness. There are nuances of honey, yeast, soft fruit and light ginger. Overall, the bitterness is light and lingering well into the finish, with some coriander and pepper.

Very dry, with a medium body and carbonation. The texture is a bit oily, though not coating, and there is no trace of alcohol.

This is a great drinking beer with enough punch to be interesting, yet subdued enough to be easy flowing.
