Notes / Commercial Description:
A California-style IPA with a Belgian twist
AKA Stone Cali-België IPA
First Release:
September 2008

Stone Cali-Belgique IPA features a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is the simply delicious Stone IPA. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds banana and spice notes to the hoppy brightness of our flagship IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

I twice tasted this one, took notes for rating, and each time lost the notes. This is the third one and this time I did not lose the notes. Third times the charm! It got better each time!
Pours a golden light amber and is very clear. Big foam head soon disapates but leaves a swirly cap and bubbly lacing.
In the aroma there is a hint of citrus/orange peel, sweet pilsner malt, Belgian yeast tones, and, interestingly, to my nose at least, hints of cherry.
The taste is doughy and biscuity. There is lots of Belgian yeast character and rustic earthy qualities. Some citrus flavor adds zestiness. Resiny hops add a great twist and a delightful mild to moderate bitterness that is felt especially in the aftertaste. Great balance as there is a fantastic interplay between sweet and bitter in the back of throat. Easy to drink, medium bodied but drinks light. Supremely quaffable. A perfect marriage between IPA and Belgian Pale Ale, kind of like Stone IPA meets Orval.
This could definitely become a go to beer. Delicious and wonderful! A true find!

Serving: 1 pt 6 fl oz bottle ("bottled 05/03/16, enjoy by 09/06/16"), poured into a Spiegelau beer tulip.

Appearance: Bright, clear gold towards and orange hue. Frothy head of fine white foam; streaky lace.

Smell: Fresh citrus (lemon, orange), spicy Belgian yeast, subtle banana and fruity esters.

Taste: Stone IPA backbone with solid malt body and biting bitterness, livened up by Belgian yeast spice and fruit notes.

Mouthfeel: Medium body and lively carbonation.

Overall: Nice harmony of hop laden West Coast IPA with added complexity of fruity, spicy Belgian yeast.

Pour is a dark hazy yellow with a massive amount of head that has awesome lacing. Smells of sweet fruit, citrus, banana, and some orange in there. Taste is very nice, mouth full of fruity tastes & hops with that Belgium yeast backing it all up, just outstanding. The finish is smooth and leaving you wanting more. Stone has cranked this one out of the park, I am a big big fan of this beer, goes well in summer or winter, just a great beer.

This pours a light amber-tan color. Surprised that there's not more foam from my pour. There's a light lemony kick to this that's like a fresh squeezed shot of juice that took the place of whiskey in a broiler maker. Something like that. Then it tapered off and there's an estery note on it that's subtle. Tastes crisp, with a lemony hop profile that hints at a light estery character. I like the bitterness on this with the finish.

Keg, Brewdog, Bristol - Pours clear golden with a small white head. Medium carbonation. Nice lacing. Smell - Bready with a light citrus and spice notes. Taste - bready/yeasty up front, light citrus backdrops, strong bitter long lasting finish. Sits very well between the Belgian and US.

Love the gargoyle face caps. I use them as devil tokens in Magic The Gathering games.

Clear gold with a hang around head. Smells like dry basement must and Bubblelicious orange Bubble Yum. Tastes like it smells. Nice dry, moisture sucking finish.

I've had this several times and sometimes it's better than others. This time it's fresh and good.
