Style: Belgian IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.60%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale is a Strong Golden Belgian style ale highly hopped with American hops (Ahtanum, Amarillo and Simcoe). The beer pours pale golden with a thick and creamy white head of foam. The aroma is full of depth: nuances of pepper, clove, and banana from the Belgian yeast strain, and the resiny citrus notes from the American hops blend together nicely to provide a complex aromatic character. The taste is spicy, hoppy and fruity, with a very dry and a pleasant bitter end. The bitterness lingers nicely, and provides a refreshing finish that leads you to want to drink more and more of this beer!

A - Pours a deep golden honey color. Very clear. Has a bright white, foamy, one finger head that dissipates fairly quickly.

S - Banana, cloves, spiciness, and booziness. Has some gin-like qualities as it warms.

T - Wow, very flavorful. Banana, clove, citrus, apple, flowers, bubble gum. Leaves you with a slight hop bittnerness and a peppery flavor. This beer is somewhere between a tripel, fruity cocktail, and champagne.

M - On the lighter end of medium in body. Fairly dry finish.

D - I'm not going to mind drinking the whole bomber but this certainly isn't a session beer or anything. Wish I had another bottle to age.

Poured from a bomber to a Tulip

A- golden reddish orange w/ zero head

S- spicey fruit cocktail, citrus, viny, bubblegum, grapes, wine, grapefruit, faint cat piss

T- follows the nose

M- medium body, crisp carbonation

O- so this is the last VE of my reverse order vertical, and i'm kinda pissed. It's seems Stone didn't do their homework and everyone i have had, besides 11.11.11, have turned into a fraction of it's former self. These were specifically made to age until 12.12.12, yet the abvs are low and they actually had the audacity to make this one an IPA and expect the hops to last for 4 years? I was planning on trying to get 2-7 but i know now they are just a novelty iten at this point. For the first time, i'm very disappointed with Stone

pours a pale gold with a creamy white head. slight haze. aroma is candied tropical fruit with some yeasty spiciness and biscuits. sweet pale malts in the entry with a nice smooth, medium hop bitterness. long complex finish. light in body for this abv, nice creamy/prickly carbonation. almost as drinkable as duvel.

09/02/08- Purchased at Whole Foods in San Mateo, CA.

Presentation- 22oz bottle, 2008 Anniversary release. Poured into mu Duvel tulip.

Appearance- Deep golden colored pour. Semi-creamy and frothy head about 3/4 inch in size. Leaves a nice slight foam layer during consumption. Lacing is about average with light streaks and spotting.

Smell- Smells like a typical Belgian Strong. Has lots of spices, some earth, som vanilla and some sugary notes.

Taste- Sugar hits very hard in this beer....about the only drawback I could find. A bit too sweet of a kick. Light alcohol notes, large vanilla aspect along with some tropical fruit notes as well. Overall a good flavor variance. Hops are here, but not as heavy as I thought after hearing how hoppy this years release was.

Mouthfeel- Brisk and crisp, but easy drinking with a sharp carbonation. Sticky mouthfeel.

Drinkability- Overall a very good beer per style, particularly by an American brewer. Just too sticky and too sweet. Something I don't think will really change with aging. Otherwise, pretty darn exceptional.
