Consumed Feb 19th, 2010.

Beer pours a hazy mahogany. Though few, tiny bubbles rise steadily for quite a while through the glass, repleneshing a pale tan head that's really more of a foamy skin. Good lacing.

Aroma is yeasty with resiny, sappy hop notes still apparent after many months in the bottle. Slight spicy note (cinnamon? ginger?) as well.

Flavor is different from fresh draft I consumed seven months ago! Bready malt up front, though relatively fleeting, is a mildly sweet launching point. Strong resiny hops form the middle, borrowing a page from the Arrogant Bastard playbook. The finish is slightly woody and significantly bitter. Some warming.

Mouthfeel is slightly thick and a little bit oily. The evaporative finish I noted on draft is not present here, though the end of each quaff is RELATIVELY clean and dry. Except for the lingering bitterness, of course.

Not as special as some of Stone's other anniversary ales and not especially drinkable due to the overwhelming, barleywine-like hop midtaste.

I respected this brew, I appreciated it, but I'm not sure how much I liked it.

A - Po' up is a very dark translucent mahogany, with good head that sticks around for a bit, but not much lacing.

S - The aroma is a large malt presence; it smells a bit like rye and grapefruity hops, as well.

T - The dark, rich, roasted malt flavor is strong. There is a strong grapefruit hop, a big black licorice flavor and again
a suggestion of rye. Long whiskey burn on the finish. Everything about this beer is noticeably strong.

M - The feel is quite akin to bourbon and soda, except dry.

D - It is quite a strong and flavorful brew, but a bit heavy-handed in some ways that I do not put great value on.

Not sure what the deal is here - I've had this on tap and loved it enough to cellar one, but it was terrible on Stone Winter Storm. I even had Bill pour it for christ sake!

A - Weridly thin look almost like someone had spilt coffee into the glass. Slightly hazy with a good head - but not the thick opaque drink I was expecting.

S - Not very hoppy with some of the specialty coming thru but not very much. Odd as its very heavily hopped.

T - Underwhelming. Hops are bitter in a bad way, like dull and stingy not bright and citrusy. Specialty is there but not very robust. Even after warming

M - Bad bad bad. Very thin despite the creamy head. Syrupy imperial type taste but in a bad way.

D - I thought this would be great, but quickly moved on. First time I've thought about returning a beer. Could be a bunk keg - but again it was at Stone ya know?

Had a fresh bottle over the summer but never took the time to review it. Luckily, I was given a 22 oz bomber as an unexpected Christmas gift.

A - Dark mahogany with tan head, 1 finger, recedes to a collar. Second pour gave large patches of sticky lacing.

S - Sweet malt and little if any hops present here. Possibly some herbal notes, maybe Willamette?

T - Big, BIG sweet malts. Toffee pudding and burnt caramel. Leafy/grassy hops up front, bitter grapefruit, hop resin, and herbal. Bitterness is a little stark for the sweet malts upfront.

M - Thinnish body, carbonation is nice and light. Bitter and herbal hops linger on the palate.

D - Alcohol is hidden extremely well behind those big flavors, little if any detectable heat. I remember this being much more bitter and hints of tropical fruits when it was fresh. After 6 months it's still drinking pretty well right now.

Served on-tap at Delaney's in New Haven, Conn.

A: Poured a deep, mahogany amber-red color with a thin cap or off-white foam which stuck around for a little while before fading to a thin ring of bubbles. Slightly hazy with bright garnet highlights.

S: Smells of a varied bouquet of hop flowers: grapefruit, pine and some smokiness come to the forefront. Very herbaceous.

T: Flavor is a sweet, boozy hop wallop from the get go. Some sweet, smoky caramel and toffee malts are deep roasted revealing a slight woody, earthy, tobacco flavor. This is soon stampeded by fruity, bittersweet hop flavors. The noticeable alcohol sting and moderate carbonation cut through the sweetness of the brew nicely and leaves the finish dry and grassy with a sticky sweetness to boot.

M: Mouthfeel is full bodied and slightly chewy, although the ABV and hop content cut through it a bit, adding some astringency as a trade-off.

D: Pusing the envelope around what I suspect is more like 10% ABV, the malt content is high as this strong ale has a strong set of legs. You wouldn't want to session it, but splitting a bomber after a beef or pork meal would be a mighty fine idea.

The kicker is the high alpha acid hop content which was strangely unexpected. Glad it's in there though, as it adds a DIPA dimension to the ale. Stone crafted a big, boozy strong ale to celebrate their 13th anniversary and I wouldn't have had it any other way.

Poured from a bomber into a snifter.

A-Deep ruby, in body. A nice full 2 fingers of head white head. Lacing is ridiculously sticky here, even though the beer is fairly cold.

S-A LOT going on here. Mixed aromas of dark fruit, molasses, piney and floral hops, and malts. Scents of grapefruit also present.

T-The taste delivers, no doubt about it. Nice sweet taste with the malts, citrus, caramel. Very slight hints of chocolate as well. Big hop finish typical of stone beers.

M-Medium body, medium carb. Warms the upper body with the alcohol on the way down. Nice aftertaste left in the mouth.

D-I wouldn't say the alcohol is exactly well hidden. One of these bombers is all that is drinkable in an evening.

22 oz. bottle served in a snifter glass. Pours a clear mahogany color with a decent frothy tan head, good lacing throughout. Aromas is caramel malts, pine, citrus, grapefruit and spicy hops, bread, and a hint of alcohol. Flavor is caramel malts, pine and citrus hops, a nice fruitiness, a touch of alcohol, and a hint of wood. Mouthfeel is smooth, a little creamy, finishes dry and fairly bitter. Good beer, nice and hoppy.

Pours a rich brownwith a reddish tint. Clear as crystal with a creamy looking tan head. Nice retention with good lace.
Smell is malt, floral, pine, hops.
Taste is hops, malt, floral and pine.
Medium/full body, smooth with some alcohol in aftertaste. Slightly warming in throat. Very good but only want one a night.

Live Review. Poured from the 22 oz. bomber that I bought about 6 months ago for $6.99 at Heinen's in Willoughby Hills, Ohio into my Stone Levitation Ale silver rimmed goblet. No oberved "best by" date.

A Light brown meringue like head that leaves spottty lacing on the inside of the glass after repeated sips. Body is a nice, pleasing mahogany that is dark but lets some light through. 4.0

S Earthy/leafy/organic hops over a light to medium roast malt with the sense of some rock candy or light caramel in the background. Intriguing smell. 4.0

T The earthy/leafy/organic hops are there but surprisingly there is also a tart/grapefruit/harsh hops taste that I did not pick up in the smell. Any sweet malt is eclipsed by the many layers of hops which really dominate the taste. In fact, the hops bitterness stays with me well into the aftertaste. There is also a pungeant soapy taste (a consipracy of the hops and malt?) that I do not very well like. 3.0

M This is a big beer with all of that hops taste and the warmth of the 9.5 ABV to make the feel rather "rough." I do like this type of feel, even if I was not enamored with the taste. 4.0

D Only fair with that bitter hops well into the aftertaste. 3.0

Notes: Hops lovers will appreciate this beer more than I did.

Pours into my glass a deep brooding dark garnet with a solid inch of creamy, bubbling khaki foam on top. Quite picturesque really. Aromas of strong caramel and toasted malts upfront with an underlying spiciness. Herbal / piney resinous hops are still holding on but I can tell they have faded a bit. A bit nutty as well.

First sip brings a good mix of caramel and toasted malts that quickly moves into a flow of herbal, pine resin hops. The hops cut through nicely as it flows down with a kick of spiciness and some fruit tones as well. Bitter finish and pretty darn tasty.

Mouthfeel is smooth and medium bodied with good carbonation. A tad bit dry. Overall, goes down pretty darn tasty and I wish I would've drank this one fresh, but still glad to have had the opportunity. Thanks kmpitz2.

A - Dark caramel/red color with a strong two finger head and decent retention. Head never fully dissipates. Little lacing.

S - Stone's website says this is the first beer they bottled that's been double dry-hopped, and the aroma shows it. Strong piney scent, but it doesn't overpower the malts, especially as the beer warms.

T - Piney hops. I get a hint of caramel as the beer starts to warm. The bitterness from the hops linger in the aftertaste, but they're still not too overpowering.

M - Lingering bitterness, almost sticks to the inside of your mouth. Decent carbonation, not too heavy.

D - I think one 22 oz. bottle is enough, because any more would overwhelm my palate.

The bottle said to drink it in 2009 so I don't know how much different it would have been fresh, but overall it's a very good beer. Comparable to Arrogant Bastard.

M: pretty smooth for something that seems heavy, with more carbonation later

Good-bye, Stone 13. Had to share my last bottle of this case. I have no more, and the bottle says to drink it fresh, so this is probably my last dance with this beer.

Pours dark reddish brown with a tan head. The aroma is hop forward, with a lot of piney, resinous hops as well as some alcohol. The flavor follows the aroma with piney hops and alcohol. as well as some darker malts. There is some spiciness in the flavor and it is somewhat boozy. Medium mouthfeel and carbonation. Very good beer, although I think I preferred it when it was fresh as opposed to drinking it with six months age on it.

On-tap at Delaney's into a footed pilsner glass.

A: Clear ruby-amber body topped by a finger of moderately creamy tan head. Decent retention and solid lace. Attractive.

S: Huge wave of piney, resinous hops; moderate spice, and just a bit of malt sweetness. Straightforward and excellent.

T: Follows the nose quite closely, with a constant, delicious, complex assault of rich, juicy hops. THe malt is only present in the slightest bit of background balance. Dry spicy, slightly boozy finish. Very tasty.

M: Medium, slightly sticky body; maybe a bit under-carbonated.

D: Pretty standard for its strength. Hops help keep any potential cloying at bay.

Notes: I ordered this without remembering what style it even was (not that "American Strong" means all that much, though - it tasted far more like a DIPA), as I trusted Stone to deliver again. They did. This awesome, hugely hoppy red ale puts even AB to shame, as far as I'm concerned.

Looks like this is about 6 months old...picked up a bomber in WI, never seen it before. Silkscreened bottle interested me enough, but not the tl;dr story on the back.

Pours a reddish tawny brown, some sticky lace. A cluster of tan bubbles clings to one side. Retention is ok, a skim maintains across the surface.

Sort of generic hoppy aroma, sweet specialty malts, rich and full bodied, lingering bitter aftertaste. Bready, bitter, almost a strong rye component. Too oppressive. This is pretty typical Stone, too full with one-dimensional bitterness to really drink much of. Eh, pass...

Pours a nice reddish dark copper with some good lacing. The nose has a beautiful piney hoppiness and a bit of amber sweet malt. The taste is much the same--there is a nice malt backbone, but the dominant component is piney hops, with a bit of floral and citrus going as well. Mouthfeel is medium with nice carbonation. Overall, I liked this one quite a bit better than the 12th Anniversary, and was happy to get to try this year's release.

A- Deep deep amber, almost brown. Poured with a fat head, that quickly halved itself, but lingered through the end.

S- Intense floral and citrus, with a malty afternote.

T- Initially a little sweet, with prominent notes of etoh, intensely bitter and dry in the finish. Deeper still there are hints of roasted coffee beans, toffee, and even apples.

M - The carbonation lets this beer dance on your tongue and deceive you into thinking it is a much lighter beer. As I mentioned before, this beer finishes dry...REALLY dry. I almost needed a glass of water to go along with this baby.

D - Absolutely drinkable, for about one serving. Then I would need to venture into lighter, less etoh heat/dryness and something with a more prominent malt backbone.

22 oz. bomber poured into a stemmed glass for tasting purposes.

A- Dark brown liquid. Big off white/cream colored head. Lots of white foam floating all over the beer- spider web lacing. Very nice appearance.

S- To me, the smell really stuck out on this beer. Big raisons and dark candied fruits. Fruit roll ups, grapes, booze. Malts and cocoa.

T- This is why I love Stone. The hops are the shining star of this beer. Grassy and resiny hops right up front smacking you in the face followed up with a huge malt backbone (prune- caramel- dried fruits). Very flavorful beer.

M- Creamy and big bodied. Thick and lucious.

D- Nice sipping ale here. I enjoyed this beer. The flavors were all over the map but you still had a consistent hop bite.

If you liked the Arrogant Bastard and Double Bastard Ales, you will love this beer.

A: Pours a dark, dark brown, much like the Double Bastard Ale. Really impressive color, but the head was unimpressive and did not lace for some reason.

S: Really strong malt smell here. The predominant smell might be considered to be a "molasses-like" smell. The hops are nearly buried by the malt presence, to be honest, but they're there.

T: The way I would describe this beer would be that it has the offensiveness of the arrogant bastard ale at the double bastard strength level. This beer is simply between those two in flavor but very strong overall. Frankly, most people would not like this beer and I've been disappointed to read reviews on here of people complaining about the strength of this beer when that's simply Stone's style, that is, a bombardment of roasted malt and hops...which I happen to love.

M: A little overcarbonated but still really great.

D: Not the most drinkable on the block, this beer comes out behind the Double Bastard in drinkability.

Final statement: If you don't like the Arrogant Bastard Ale, you will not like this Ale, so leave it on the shelf for people like me to enjoy instead.

A- Copper with a very dark beige head. Colossal, eruptive head. Big set of lace draperies hang from inside of the glass.

S- Fresh-squeezed, bright grapefruit juice and zest aromas race up from the glass. The problem? The hop aromas so dominate the aromatic profile of the beer that one has little chance of savoring the malt aroma or any other complexities.

M, D- A big beer from a great house, but I am bound to opine that the shrill hops are oppressively overbearing! I must respectfully beg the pardon of drinkers who love this overly astringent style, but it doen't appeal to me at all.

A: Dark Redish brown with a medium tan head

S: Has a piney hop smell that turns into a sweet raisony scent. Smells a bit boozy.

T: Has a nice piney bitterness but a clashing sweet maltiness that I can't say I like.

M: It's a little thick and nice and bitter.

D: The heavy hops make it more of a slow drinker and the strange maltiness makes it even slower.

Overall it feels like a nice heavy IPA mixed with your average malty brew. I can't say that this combo is my favorite. It's drinkable but not my favorite. I will say I didn't drink it in 2009 like the bottle suggests.

The pour unveils a walnut body with copper and ruby hues lying beneath a massive, foamy, tan head that patiently subsides to leave big, sticky lacing clinging to the glass.

Big aromas consist of sweet malt and rich, herbal or piney hops. Malt likely consists of sweet caramel or toffee.

The palate has some nice character with immediate malt sweetness reflective of the nose followed by the assertive hearty, herbal hop bitterness.

The mouthfeel is medium to full in body with medium carbonation and a velvety start to a slightly drying finish.

This is a very well structured brew with nice balance in flavor and very pleasing overall. Seems like a new twist on a traditional Stone Brew.

22ox bottle in a snifter glass

Appearance: dark amber with a firm head head

Nose: strong hops, chemical, very slight dark fruit

Taste: aggressive hops, slight malty sweetness, flowery but not in the traditional IPA way, almost like a Belgium double as it warms up, the complexity deepens as the temp went up

I normally like Stone's product but this one struck me as way too aggressive and difficult to drink. It was very hard to get past the intense bitterness of the hops. I think I'll stick with their Arrogant Bastard and Double Arrogant Bastard Ales.

22oz bomber into Duvel tulip. Bottled June 2009.

Appearance: Pours dark, opaque reddish brown with a 3/4 inch off-white head that dissipates at a moderate pace and sticks to the glass. Splotchy lacing throughout.

Smell: Pine, candied sugar, caramel. Some alcohol as it warms. Nice mix of piney hop aroma with the deep candy malt smell of a good American barley wine.

Taste: Toffee and caramel malt up front, then big piney and citrus hops in the finish. 90 IBU sounds about right; very hoppy. This tastes like a hoppier Arrogant Bastard with a deeper malt profile (sounds good to me). About 1/4 of the way into the bottle, the ABV comes out and seems to subdue the sweetness of the malt and bring out a note of dark chocolate. The hop bitterness builds up, eventually being the dominant note from start to finish (though the malt flavors are still present). Very aggressive beer.

Mouthfeel: Starts out creamy, with a carbonation tingle coming out only at the end along with the hop bitterness. Full bodied and, at first, well-balanced. Once the bitterness and the booze set in, the balance is thrown off and the creaminess is more or less gone. By the end, it's a sharp, bitter mouthfeel ending with alcohol heat. To be honest, I like the aggressive place it ends up, though I'd have scored it higher if it stayed as beautifully creamy and balanced as it began.

Drinkability: While I love the hop/alcohol assault of this beer, it's a bit much. I can't see drinking more than a bottle at a time, nor can I see myself bringing this one out too often. Then again, I wouldn't refuse if offered more, and there's many beers such that I'd order this before I'd order them.

If you know what this beer is supposed to be and buy it anyway, I don't really see how you could be unsatisfied. It's a powerful hop assault, with the deep, adventurous malt flavors I expect from the makers of Arrogant Bastard. You have to love hops to love this beer, but if you do, you get a lot of other interesting things along with the bitterness. For me, a great beer.

I bought a few bottles of the 13th Anniversary in the summer, then I realized that these beers should not be cellared, so I decided to start drinking them.

As many reviews have stated, this beer has a beautiful appearance. Great color, great head retention.

The smell is a little stronger on the alcohol than I like, but it is a Strong Ale and is 9.5% ABV, so I guess that is to be expected.

The mouthfeel is more malty than hoppy, but different than the 11th or what is now the Sublimely Self Righteous (one of my favorites).

The finish is very bitter. Fine at first, but by the end of the bottle, you kind of tire of the bitterness.
