Bottle shared by pghlee - thanks!
Pours a color one shade away from black with a one-finger off-white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.
Smells of black malts with citrus and pine hops and a hint of anise.
Tastes similar to how it smells. Dark malt flavors up front are joined shortly by piney flavors and light hints of citrus. Midway through the sip a hint of licorice/anise comes in before a crisp and slightly bitter ending.
Mouthfeel is good. It has a very nice thickness with solid carbonation.
Drinkability is good. I didn't have a problem finishing my glass and could have a few of these.
Overall I'm pretty sure this is the first black imperial pilsner I've had but it was certainly enjoyable. Worth a shot.

Wow, I don't even remember this beer existing, let alone buying a bottle for $6.49...but there it was, in the deep, dark recesses of my beer closet. It looks like I'm a good four years beyond the next most recent review here. Any more of these still out there?? I'll just say that this exceeded my expectations for an 11 year old "pilsner" and I'm glad I didn't have to break the glass case on my commemorative 2010 World Series Champion SF Giants Budweiser to enjoy a beer tonight. I'd much rather have that one poured over my grave than into my mouth, thank you very much.

Dark black pour, tan head 4/5". Aroma was plenty of hops and roast, there's just one of your juxtapositions.
The taste is smooth, yet bitter, roasty yet light mouthfeel, immense yet hides alcohol well. The name is so fitting. Its not all roast, the hops standout, grassy, bitter, citrusy.
Cost was a little much, but this is one of those hybrid double black ipa/porter/schwarzbier/pilsner type of things.

Bottle share thanks to Toby. Dark for a strong pils, lots of malt, roast grains present but subdued. Bittersweet. Not quite a schwarzbier, interesting take on several styles.

09/26/13 From bottle. At 10% this has an exaggerated burn in the taste. Unfortunately it is at the expense of anything nuanced in the brew. Sure there are roasted malts in the aroma, but when the rubber meets the road...all I'm getting is "The Burn". Could be a bottle beyond use by since it was a one-off in 2009, but at 10% I wouldn't think that should not be an issue.
