Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 13.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Formerly Fyodor's Classic

Stone Imperial Russian Stout is a thick, rich and sinful beer that’s heavy on the palate and massively aromatic with notes of anise, black currants, cof fee and roastiness.

This profoundly complexed beer will overwhelm all but the most stalwart beer fanatics with its level of intensity. Rich coffee, bitter and milk chocolate characteristics abound, while dark charred oak, rich vanilla and caramel from the bourbon barrels synergistically elevate and further enhance the ultra-intense taste of the original beer. The name we chose for this heady creation, “Fyodor”, is a tip of the hat to Fyodor Dostoyevsky, one of the greatest, most influential novelists of Russia’s Golden Age.

L: pours black, medium thickness with not much of a head
S: bourbon and bitter sweet chocolate.
T: chocolate and bourbon. Not rich and fudgy, but sweet and thinner sharper chocolate and bourbon flavors
F: medium thickness, lots of carbonated bubbles, smooth other than all those bubbles.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a jet black color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was a thin, tan-colored, creamy head that quickly dissipated. Below average lacing.

S: A big, powerful aroma of bourbon, dark chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruit, and coffee.

T: Tasted of a hint of coffee (not much), lots of dark chocolate (very nice), some roasted malt, ton of dark fruit (raisins, in particular), cherries, bourbon, and light hops in the finish. Like the aroma, the flavor was big and powerful. It's complex warming, and very yummy. Not overly boozy considering the high ABV %.

F: An average amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Very much full-bodied.

O: A well made RIS that benefits greatly from the bourbon barrel aging. Quite drinkable.

Deep and dark with minimal tan head. Aroma of bourbon, malt and a deep dark sweetness. Taste is roast with dark fruits. Lots of bourbon and a good balance of malts. Finish is with a search of alcohol and a roasted sweet malt finish.

That was a bitch to open...

Pours an effervescent mahogany with a sliver of caramel colored head. Viscious, zero lacing & head retention

S: Bourbon , dark fruit, raw booze, some figs late

T: Follows the nose, woody dryness, some booze warmth up front, plus dark chocolate. A touch of raisin & dark cherry mixes with Bourbon & warming booze, plus more dryness as this warms. Finishes boozey, with oaky dryness &, figs

MF: Fairly chewy, slight carbonation, warming

Pretty good, the barrel aspect is still a little too strong for perfection; maybe give this a year + ???

Long time want that is letting me down. Looks good on the pour and a great nose, but there in an astringent flavor that goes on for days lingering long after the malt, heat, and sweet aspects have faded away.

Serving: 500mL bottle poured into a Founder's Backwood's Bastard snifter. Bottled October 2017, making this about 2 months old. It's the 2017 series, Batch 2.

A: Pours pitch black, no head or carbonation whatsoever. Looks like motor oil in the glass.

S: Woo-boy, did someone slip BCBS into my glass? This thing smells straight-up like Reg. Very sweet bourbon aroma, tons of vanilla, oak, faint chocolate. Beautiful smelling beer.

T: Again, what the heck? Is this Bourbon County? Huge bourbon up front, very smooth, sweet, rich. Followed by some vanilla, oak, tobacco, and some sweet chocolate.

M: A touch thinner than BCBS, but still pretty full, smooth. Alcohol noticeable, but balanced well.

O: Well I haven't been this impressed by a beer in a long time. I know this beer ain't no chump, it's BA Stone RIS after all. But several years after it's first bottling and not really being a huge annual release like some other famous BA stouts, this thing kind of flew under the radar and was an easy pickup off the shelf. But wow is this amazing. It literally looks, smells, and tastes like BCBS. I'm gonna knock it a bit for being a copy-cat, and it's a tad more thin and not AS sweet or rich, but this thing is still world-class and should be praised. You could easily fool me into thinking this was 2017 Reg in a blind tasting, it's that good.

Recommendation: Holy hell, if you see this, buy it. World class beer, up there with BCBS. No joke.
