Notes / Commercial Description:
Stone Imperial Russian Stout is a thick, rich and sinful beer that’s heavy on the palate and massively aromatic with notes of anise, black currants, cof fee and roastiness.

This profoundly complexed beer will overwhelm all but the most stalwart beer fanatics with its level of intensity. Rich coffee, bitter and milk chocolate characteristics abound, while dark charred oak, rich vanilla and caramel from the bourbon barrels synergistically elevate and further enhance the ultra-intense taste of the original beer. The name we chose for this heady creation, “Fyodor”, is a tip of the hat to Fyodor Dostoyevsky, one of the greatest, most influential novelists of Russia’s Golden Age.

500mL bottle. 2017 series Batch No. 2. Pours a viscous black color with a thin layer of head that fades quickly. Boozey aroma with a good deal of oak, tobacco, earth, dark fruits, molasses and black coffee. The taste is Bourbon upfront with good deal of oak and vanilla. Bitter dark chocolate, black coffee, dark fruits and leather. Some char and roasted malts as well. Woody Bourbon finish with some more coffee. Thick, heavy mouthfeel with very little carbonation. Lots of alcohol heat, as expected. It’s a bit on the pricey side but absolutely worth buying.

2017 batch, 500mL bottle. Bitter dark chocolate, bourbon heat, earthy nuttiness, and maybe just a hint of dark-roasted coffee. Unusual for me in that it's a big BBA stout, but I prefer the flavors when served fresh out of the fridge, before it warms to a more traditional temperature. When warmer, it acquires more bitterness that detracts from the overall complexity and balance when chilled.

I have to admit this is the blackest beer I’ve ever seen. Many stouts are black but this one was completely opaque charcoal black. The Fyodor I just drank is the new batch #2. I think it was amazing.

Look: jet black with a half inch mocca head.

Aroma: roasted malts, chocolate, some coffee, some bourbon.

Taste: It's roasted malts, dark chocolate, some coffee, vanilla, distinct bourbon, and honey sweetness. It is not just the bourbon but the honey sweetness that make it stand out. The flavor is wonderful.

Feel: full bodied, syrupy.

16.9oz bottle, batch #2, bottled on October 2017, 13.5% ABV. Pours jet black with a small sized dark khaki head which vanishes over time. Smells of barrel, earthy hops, roasted malt, cocoa, caramel, vanilla, and some coffee. The taste follows closely with roasted malt, barrel, cocoa, caramel, and coffee. Some noticeable alcohol comes though. Fairly high sweetness, bitterness, and dryness. Average body and low carbonation for the style. Overall, it has a barrel presence throughout with a mellow RIS profile. Pretty good stout, but I prefer this year's Mikhail.

Poured from 500 ml bottle. 2017 vintage

A: Very dark brown tending towards black. Smallish one finger mocha head that settles quickly with little to no lacing.

S: Bourbon, chocolate fudge, tobacco, charred oak, and vanilla.

T: Rich dark chocolate, bourbon, and vanilla with nice barrel notes. A subtle sweetness that comes off like honey or molasses.

M: Full bodied with a syrup like quality. Finish is very dry with prominent alcohol heat.

O: Excellent stout. My only complaint is the price. At 500 ml, this should be $10 not $19.

The look and smell is unreal. Dark as night with smells of Hershey syrup with tastes of fudgey bourbon. Delicious!

This is the one without coffee right? That was Mikhail's Odd I believe. This one pours black, thin brown head, 1/4". Aroma was a predictable mixture of roasted malt, bourbon and wood.

Taste, I can call it predictable, but that is a good thing when you're talking about a Stone RIS bourbon barrel aged. Hits the familiar bourbon and mild roasted malt notes, not fudgy, but there is a dry chocolate malt presence to it that hides the alcohol nicely. Caramel and sweetened toffee continue to push the mouth feel in a pleasant direction. The barrel does a good job at hiding any dark fruit bitterness from the base beer (that was never huge on those notes anyways).

A little bit of tobacco and leather on the back end with a dallop of vanilla to further smooth it all out are nice touches as well.

2014 Vintage
500ml bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours jet black in color with a one-finger dark brown creamy head that reduces to just a ring around the edge of the glass

S- sufficient but mellow bourbon barrel on the nose up front, complimented by notes of tobacco, caramel, toffee, sweet cherry, fig, raisin, molasses, leather and chocolate. The aging seems to have melded all of the aromas harmoniously

T- lots of bourbon up front with plenty of oak & vanilla. Mid-palate brings out bold roasted malt that gives notes of chocolate, molasses, coffee, fig, prune and caramel. The finish gives some earthy tobacco notes, as well as more bourbon

M- medium-heavy body with moderate carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that continues into a velvety, warming finish

O- a few years of aging seems to have meshed all of the flavors well, still plenty of bourbon and just enough alcohol warmth
