Xocoveza Tres LechesXocoveza Tres Leches
Notes: Stone Xocoveza Tres Leches combines the inspiration of Oaxacan Hot Chocolate and Tres Leches treats in an imperial stout that’s smooth, creamy and intensely indulgent. Made from all that’s good about the holidays, Stone Xocoveza is brewed with chocolate, coffee, Pasilla peppers, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. At the pop of the can, the aroma is intense – cinnamon and spice up front with lingering coffee, caramel and sweet vanilla. It is a lively blend of flavors. Sweet spices are balanced with rich and creamy chocolate. Mild roast coffee flavor shines through and vanilla enhances the intense combination. Pasilla peppers impart a light hint of heat in the finale. With all that complexity, the beer is surprisingly bright on the palate, with just a touch of the residual sweetness that all the decadent flavors imply. Like a slice of Grandma’s tres leches cake and a sip of Oaxacan Hot Chocolate, the result is creamy, intensely flavorful and silky smooth.

Appearance: Pours a fudge brown color with a one finger tan head; quality lacing

Smell: Chocolate, caramel, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and hot pepper

Taste: Chocolate forward, with the caramel, vanilla and cinnamon pushing in; nutmeg and hot pepper tones appear later; the finish is sweet but has an odd metallic tone

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation

Overall: Other than the finish, I enjoyed this but prefer the base version as it is less sweet.

De Labirratorium. En copa Mahou Barrica. Jugando a Fortnite (primera victoria temp 2 cap 3) y Larry Wet Dreams (terminado).

I love the base Xocoveza - though not as good as that, it’s still pretty damn solid.

Full of dark chocolate flavor, roasted malts, and a very light sweetness- it is definitely unique. I think the thing that holds this back is the roasted flavoring, overpowering as it is. Otherwise, it is a delicious experience to truly have.

The classic dry cocoa + pasilla pepper magic is very faded.

I get some vanilla, medium roasted malt and some coffee, but nothing that would wake me up. I smell the cinnamon, but can't taste it. The hot pepper tastes more like green bell pepper which clashes with the rest.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

Can poured into a Stone Brewing Co snifter

A: Pours dark brown very nearly black with a frothy khaki head that settles to a thin layer and leaves a little spotty lacing.

S: Spices come right out up front, pasilla peppers, cinnamon, and nutmeg all show up, roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, slight earthy notes, and caramel brown sugar sweetness.

T: Roasty, coffee and chocolate, quickly followed with a nice touch of spice, pasilla peppers, cinnamon, and nutmeg, a little vanilla, caramel and light brown sugar, slightly earth, a touch of char, and faint hints of dark fruit on the back end.

M: Medium to full body, moderate carbonation, a bit creamy, and just a touch of warmth from the peppers.

O: Solid variant, but I'll still take the original. The extra sweetness softens the flavors a bit more than I'd like.

Poured a dark ruby red with a medium tan head and moderate lacing.

Tastes of dark malt, lots of spice - especially nutmeg that lingers, cinnamon and vanilla. It has too much nutmeg for my liking but overall a good offering.

1/17/22 Canned 10/22/21. Complex, enjoyable brew. Chocolate & coffee in balance with hints of cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, even peppers. Not much of an aroma but the taste makes up for it. Would like again.

Pours dark. Tan foam. Spicy sweet aroma. Big spicy chocolate body. Sweet but not too sweet. Spiciness persists. Smooth. Excellent beer.

My beer guy at my local Total Wine suggested that this brew was pretty good but he mentioned it could be sweet and a few other things so I bought a single can just to try. Yes I have just drank that I find that my faith in stone brewery is well-founded. Delightful taste and not overwhelmingly sweet but I am now wishing I had bought a six pack. Hope to get back to Total Wine and buy a six pack!

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a half finger dark khaki head with great retention and nice lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, hot peppers, cinnamon and Mexican chocolate; dominated by peppers and cinnamon. Flavor is dark toasted malt, lactose, Mexican chocolate (cocoa and cinnamon), hot peppers and vanilla. Cinnamon leche, and pepper finish. Medium bodied with silky, moderate creaminess. It's been too long since I've had Xocoveza; glad to try it again in this interesting variant. It took some work getting a bottle of this; Stone's distribution in Seattle is unexpectedly horrible the last few years. Old standards like Bastard are widely available even at grocery stores, but many other offerings are just not available at the many places I haunt for craft beer. The big box stores had 12 and 24 packs of this, but I'm swamped with stouts now and just had no way to buy that many; I just wanted to try it and maybe have a few for extended sampling. I finally had to order a bomber from California (never saw a single bomber bottle in this area for the last three months). Well, glad I got it, this is one of the great annual non-standard stouts. Oddly, I'm not really getting (or remembering?) the difference between this and the base Xocoveza, which has always had a milk stout profile to my taste. I am getting a little more lactose, but it's a small difference. The good news is that as always, this is a great tribute to Mexican chocolate; particularly the peppery versions. Fine cocoa, lactose, cinnamon and an authentic kick from the pasilla peppers, including a mild, but noticeable burn in the aroma. The difference between this and the regular version is small enough it may not be enough for the struggle to get a single bottle, but this stout is reward enough in itself. Here's to easy to find Xocovesa next year.

L - Deep black with some mahogany highlights around the edges with a a light tan head that dissipates somewhat slowly leaving behind a thin cap and minimal lacing
S - Dark chocolate and roasted malts along with hints of spicy peppers and bitter coffee - some vanilla and caramel intermixed as well
T - Tons of rich dark chocolate and pasilla peppers up front and throughout - the peppers really shine on this years variant - followed by bitter, roasted coffee, vanilla, and caramel notes - pasilla peppers and cinnamon round everything out on the back end. Nutmeg intermixed in there as well - maybe some ginger and molasses. Very complex and very good as always
F - Medium leaning on full bodied with moderate amount of carbonation. Smooth.
O - This is a very, very good stout with a ton of flavor - especially the pasilla peppers which are a great addition - but honestly, I can't tell much of a difference between this and the original Xocoveza, which brings it down a little bit in my book

This beer pours a dark cola color from the can that looks more like a porter, but as it settles in the glass, it is has a black body under a substantial tan head. The nose has the coffee (lots) and the chocolate (less lots), with the peppers making an impressive appearance.

The taste is led by the coffee, with enough chocolate for balance, and a healthy dollop of peppers for a little heat. The key, for me, was to let this warm before pouring, because that allowed the peppers to open, and the subtle heat worked exceptionally well with the coffee and chocolate flavors, similar to the base beer.

I’m glad I have more cans of this to enjoy over the next few weeks, because this is a delicious beer, whether it’s an imperial stout (maybe), or an imperial porter (more likely, IMHO).

Poured at fridge temp. Pours jet black. Wow - lots of head! It actually overflowed a bit. Stuck around for a good 5 min and left some significant lacing. Nose is chocolate, spice, coffee, roasted malts, and a bit of caramel. Vanilla as well. The taste is very nice and smooth. The peppers really come through here. The coffee and dark chocolate are there as well. Cinnamon and nutmeg, along with vanilla. A bit of dark fruit and roasted malts. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, and the aftertaste is a mix of bitter and sweet. Overall, a really nice beer.

12 oz can poured into a tulip

A- Black with a two finger tan head.

S- Coffee, peppers, chocolate, some vanilla, cinnamon, touch of caramel and nutmeg.

T- Chocolate, peppers, coffee, vanilla, cinnamon, caramel, some nutmeg.

M- Smooth, medium body.

O- Not the biggest or boldest molé stout I’ve had, but flavors are nicely balanced and it’s very easy to drink.

Stone Xocoveza Tres Leches Imperial Stout, 8.5% ABV. Pours black with a two-finger tan head that left some lacing. Nose is chocolate, peppers, nutmeg, and coffee. Taste is chocolate, peppers, coffee, and cinnamon, slightly sweet, slightly bitter, nutmeg in the aftertaste. Good carbonation, and smooth. Overall excellent. One of those beers that I could sit and sniff all night, though the taste isn't as good.
