It's just a shade off black with a thick tan head. The smell is roasted malt with a hint of chocolate and very noticeable traces of alcohol. The smoke flavor is barely detectable at first but becomes a bit more pronounced as it warms. Unfortunately, the alcohol flavor also becomes more noticeable and overwhelms the more subtle fruity and smoky flavors. 8% abv just seems a bit high for a beer like this. Stone's smoked porter is more balanced and enjoyable.

This one pours dark black with a thick head and good retention. Aroma is sweet with notes of chocolate and vanilla. Smoke is way in the back. Full bodied and slightly syrupy. More like an Imperial Stout in my opinion. Very smooth and alcohol is well disguised by the roasty sweet malt. This is one heavy Porter bordering on a Stout. Has a slight bitter and dry finish.

Dark brown body, generous light tan head. Floral hops aroma, not very strong. Very unusual flavor, I've never had a hoppy stout before. Hop, pepper & other spices initially followed by a salty chocolate!/coffee bitter finish. I like it. Excellent.

Solid, all the way through. I'm a bit bummed that I didn't get the chance to try this when it was younger though. Poured at Stone Winter Storm 2011.

Appearance is a slightly-turbid brown color, with minimal tan head. Swirling revives the bubbles.

Smell is quite good. It's very, very roasty - the roastiness was crazy. Some smoke, and underlying sweet flavors, perhaps some breadiness.

Taste was good, just like the nose. Strong roasted notes, slight coffee-ish undercurrent, raisins?

Mouthfeel was okay, but a bit too thin. I would have really liked it if this were fuller.

Drinkability was strong. Sometimes roasty beers get tiresome... but I didn't have a problem with this one. Nice beer, probably on it's way downhill at the point though. Drink 'em if you've got 'em.

Many thanks to SawDog555 for this bottle!

A - Pitch black pour with a massively thick, creamy, sticky, toffee colored lacing.

S - Chocolate mocha.

T - Chocolate all the way through with an extremely bitter pine finish.

M - Nice big medium body with a creamy finish.

O - This beer defies the style. But I'm enjoying it.

This is a pitch black beer with notes of deep brown. It pours with a dark brown head which is dense, creamy and pretty persistent. The aroma is one of malt, roasted malt with a bit of smoke and perhaps a hint of alcohol in the nose. There is a nice thick mouthfeel to this one, and it gently coats your entire mouth. The finish has a hint of alcohol. There is lots of smoky malt flavor in this beer as well. The roasted notes remind me of coffee. A bit of sweetness becomes evident as it warms up. This beer feels thick, almost oily on my tongue, the smoke only reinforces this perception. This 22 oz bottle is a meal unto itself. Overall a fairly solid beer, I like it.

22 oz bottle dated 4/11/16.

Deep brown color with a gorgeous, thick, creamy tan head. Dark chocolate and roasted malt combine with herbal hops to form a pleasant aroma. Some light oak in the background, not much smoke at all. Good balance with a slight bitter finish. Full bodied with a smooth texture.

A nice Porter that could benefit from more smoke and less hop bitterness. Fun to get to try this re-release of the original beer brewed back in 2002.

Taste and nose are nice roasted chocolate malts. Very highly roasted. A by of smokeyness. Finishes with a typical stone herbal bitterness. Great beer. Very easy drinking for the abv. Will be disappointed to see this go.

Black. Texture is hardened water but has good weight. Brown hue. Smell and taste are good. Good yeast presence adds a honey sweet. Moderate smokey roast. Light chocolate. Molasses bitterness.

Medium body. Biting carbonation.

Go for it.

On tap at Knickerbockers in Altoona Pa

Arrives in a pint glass thick black with an oatmeal colored head. Leaves excellent lacing

Surprisingly, there was not much on the nose at all, except faint whiff of malt.

However, the taste was excellent. Solid malt background, alcohol well hidden, and a nice peppery finish.

Mouth was medium-full.

Overall, an extremely tasty take on a Baltic Porter.
