12oz bottle picked up as soon as i saw this one on the shelf. an interesting style, brewed by three solid american breweries in close vicinity to each other? sure. i think i paid $3.49 for the single. drank from an over sized snifter.
A- this one pours out a translucent dark brown colored body with a pretty small khaki colored head on top. the head is quick to become no more than a crown and leaves behind little nothing to speak of as far as lacing goes.
S- the nose is very subtle, even at warmer temps. slightly toasted, caramel and toffee malts. there is definitely a peatyness here, but its subtle as well. slight milk chocolate notes as well. earthy hops finish this one off. not a trace of the alcohol.
T- the taste starts out with caramel, toffee, and slightly toasted malts. definitely more assertive than then subtle nose. some peat, milk chocolate, and smoke follow that. earthy hops at the end. the alcohol remains well hidden.
M- the body is on the lighter side of medium bodied. the carbonation is on the lower side of medium as well. the alcohol is well hidden. not much to speak of as far as aftertaste goes.
O- this is a three way collaboration of American brewers in the same vicinity tackling a distinctly european style of beer, and they do it well. there is not much if anything americian about this. the alcohol could sneak up on you without you knowing it if you drank a couple of these. if youre a fan of the style, check it out. its pretty legit.

Had this from a bottle.
A: pours mahogany body with small, off white head that dissipates and leaves minimal lacing
S: sweet, roasted toffee smell with some caramel and vanilla hints
T: sweet toffee and caramel notes with a subtle, roasted toffee aftertaste
M: full bodied and very smooth; silky
D: nice mouthfeel and taste combo; alcohol was warming on the back of the throat; pretty good example of a scotch ale

September 11th, 2013 - A beer of this calibre, and at this price ($17.99, California) is typically out of my range. But it's my birthday month, and a luxurious beer is better than a cake at my age. The Highway 78 Scotch Ale is a promising way to celebrate. The style is one of my favorite, and the bottle demonstrates all the pedigrees of an expensive collaboration. Once poured it looks a great deal like a pint of Coca-Cola. Large bubbles stick to the side of the glass, sitting just below the thinnest of mottled heads, and the body is that familiar semi-clear liquid that we've all seen splashed, swirled and slurped in a million Coke commercials. The aroma is dominated by hickory, hickory smoke, and wood, almost so as to snell like Virginian pipe tobacco. The hickory notes return on the tongue where they present as slightly sour. A mild to medium weight palate is closer to a flat carbonation than I would have expected, but the silence of the mouthfeel reveals other subtle flavors like juniper, blueberries, black pepper, and beef jerky. The traditional caramel sugars of the scotch ale don't appear here, nor does the whiskey burn of the barrel, but these are replaced with new and interesting flavors - a wonderful birthday gift.
