Brewed with Honey malt, Brown malt, and Rye malt, yams, pumpkin, toasted fenugreek, lemon verbena, and birch bark. Warrior hops, and New Zealand Motueka hops. "Citrouille", French for pumpkin, intentionally misspelled in honor of Patrick Rue.

12oz bottle to a Nonic style taster glass
*brewed 09/11/11

I think some retailers figured they can push out old stock of this one a year later given the season and use of pumpkin here. And yeah in my case it worked.

A: Look is a deep ruddy brown with some clearing around the edges. About a half finger of taupe colored head forms giving a pretty meager posture. Some fast receding sheets of lace leave a few dots splattered upon the glass.

S: Smells of nutty roast grains up front like that of a nice brown ale but with a bit of a citrus twist to it. Leafy earth notes perk with a dash of rum-spiced raisins. Pretty simple and clean aroma given the complexity of ingredients here. No pumpkin to be found in the nose.

T: Tastes of nutty roasted malts with a dash of rye spice and a firm floral/herb perfume character towards the end of the drink. Almost lavender like. Not what I was expecting, although I really did not know what to expect with the verbena and fenugreek. There are subtleties throughout this brew including lemon sprigs, maple/brown sugar, some earthy bark, and faint chocolate notes. There is a nice moderate bitterness mid palate that gives a soft pucker and tends to amplify some of the flavors here. Alcohol is well integrated. I can pick up just a hint of roast yam but would be guessing if I didn’t know all the specialty ingredients in use. Again the pumpkin is lost on me here and was probably more trouble than it’s worth brewing. Interesting brew to say the least.

M: A lighter mouth feel and seemingly lower carbonation give a soft smooth consistency. Gives this brew a real nice creamy texture overall that exhibits some drying in the finish.

D: Actually not bad given the age. Definitely a lot going on here but I do think this is done well for the overkill of ingredients utilized. This could have been an utter train wreck and maybe that’s where the brew masters should be praised. I would have embraced something a little bolder and stand-out in the flavor category given this is Stone. All in all a nice balance but the perfume character really throws it off for me. Not what you think of when it comes to pumpkin beers. This is more in lines of something I would expect DFH to pump out.

Poured into an Elysian Brewing pint glass. No freshness date.

A- Pours a translucent light brown color with a 1/4 inch head that immediately vanishes leaving a thin ring around the edge of the glass and light surface foam. Minimal lacing.

S- Smells sweet and lemony with some mild spice in the background. I think I can see where this is going. Light notes of nutmeg, allspice and a big heavy note of lemon-scented cleaner.

T- Flavor is a bit maltier than expected considering the perfume-like nose. It's actually quite roasty for the not-so-heavy body. Got some nutty notes with the lemon turned down a bit from the aroma. Not much pumpkin though, just things that hint at pumpkin like nutmeg and allspice (although the label claims none was used). The lemon is still the overriding aspect but the rye malt and spice lend a complexity that makes things enjoyable as I look forward to each sip.

M- Semi-thin considering the color. Low carbonation's a bit of a bummer though.

O- At first, when I smelled the lemon, I thought "Oh no, is lemon verbena Stone's new ingredient to put in every beer they're involved in making?" since the 16th Anniversary IPA they made was overrun by the stuff. While the verbena is certainly a main ingredient, it's not so overbearing that the rye malt (which I feel is the saving grace of this beer) and spice can't do their job. However, the pumpkin aspect is certainly lacking and this ends up just tasting like an herbed/spiced beer.

Poured into a standard pint glass.

Bottled in September 2011, this beer probably should have been enjoyed sooner. I was able to find it again and couldn't resist giving it a shot.

Appearance: Dark, clear amber pour with a finger of head. Head dissipated relatively quickly leaving a thin layer that hung around. Moderate to minimal lacing.

Smell: An earthy, malty, slightly spicy smell.

Taste: The flavor is dominated by hops and spice up front. The pumpkin and yam flavors are not very apparent to me, however there is a bit of a sweetness in the middle.

Mouthfeel: Moderate body and carbonation. I can't help but wonder what this beer would have been like fresh off the line. Clean finish and overall pleasant feel.

Overall: I really enjoyed this beer. It was unique, flavorful and drinkable.

Appearance: Had some great color to it. Dark and rich reddish brown, very autumnal.

Smell: A pretty balanced smell, not too spicy or sweet with definite floral notes from the hops.

Taste: A really well balanced flavor, but I could really do without the verbena, and the fenugreek seems to accentuate the bitterness in a less than flattering manner. Pretty serviceable, and very drinkable considering the upfront hoppiness. It's ultimately not bad, a little too hoppy and earthy for my taste.

Mouthfeel: A nice full body. Lacks any kind of stickiness despite the body. A real plus in this department. I have no complaints about this and they did a great job.

Overall: I had some higher expectation from the yam and pumpkin, but the yam and earthy notes from the fenugreek definitely come through in the forefront. To be honest, though I didn't really love this beer, it's pretty unique amongst autumn offerings. Most of which opt for the cloyingly sweet, nutty, or spicy. It can't be said to be any of that, and its definitely got a harmony to its structure. You should give it a shot if you're looking for a unique experience from the norm.

Honestly, I think expectation really screws the pooch on this whole thing. There was a lot put into this but really what comes out is a excellently balanced and easily drinkable hoppy ale.

A: A bit dark for the style, not really sure what to think about it--the color looks somewhere between barleywine and porter.

S: Malty on the nose, joined by all the Thanksgiving spices, gingerbread, with some yams and pumpkin spice in the background. Definitely get some lemon which gives it a Christmasy, fruit cake aroma.

T: Wow, bigtime lemongrass throughout--maybe a bit pithy. Bitter on the end, but fades away to gingerbread spice and fruitcake. I'm getting very little, but still ever so slightly noticeable pumpkin and yam through the middle.

M: Pretty light mouthfeel with medium carbonation. No real warmth as the ABV is pretty low.

Poured from a bottle into a mason jar mug.

A-Biggest head I've ever seen. About an inch of liquid and the rest of the glass filled with a fluffy white head.

S-Lemon zest coming through the strongest. Although I wouldn't say it's necessarily a pleasant lemon smell,it smells kinda like lysol. Interesting to say the least.

T-The birch really dominates. Zero pumpkin and yams.

M- It's not bad, easy sippin. I liked it better as it warmed up and I continued to get used to it.

O-While this gets a few points for uniqueness and creativity, it gets docked points for not fitting properly into its category. You wouldn't call something an IPA if it lacked all hop bitterness. This "pumpkin beer" completely lacks any pumpkin taste or smell to it.

2x nice pours tonight at Bier Thirty... Pretty cool to get this one in Boise. Nice white head.... the brew was a little darker than I had expected... a fairly clear amber.

Nose shows a decent sweetness that seems to be magnified by some underlying sweet spices... some lemon too... hard to pick apart... Not my cup of tea.. too much spice.

Flavor pretty much mirrors the nose.. not as sweet as the nose would suggest, with an underlying toastiness that helps damper the spices.

Body is much bigger than I would have guessed for a 5% beer... carbonation is about right... I had my share, I don't need to try it again.

Poured from the bottle into a goblet.

Appearance: The beer pours a murky reddish brown color with a finger of fluffy off white head. The head fades to a ring around the pour as the beer settles.

Smell: Lots of spices, reminds me a bit of Christmas. Slightly sweet from the malt. Kind of like gingerbread.

Taste: No real sweetness here, big change from the taste. I'm getting the birch along with some spices. The Christmas theme doesn't really continue here. Rather bitter in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with fluffy carbonation and a very dry finish.

Overall: This was a weird one for me. I enjoyed it enough, but there may have been too much going on. Not sure I need another.

A - Deep mahogany maple syrup.  Off-white head.  Nice retention and lace.

S - A savory mix of allspice, thyme, salt, and a touch of cinnamon.

T -  Similar profile to the nose.  Cinnamon, allspice, and thyme layered with rich pumpkin and light smoke.  Kiss of lemon in the center.  Lightly salty finish.

M - Medium/full body. Low carbonation.

O - A savory take on a pumpkin ale, but not necessarily a successful one.

Pours a brownish amber color with a medium size light brown tinged head.

Aromas begin with lightly burnt raisin, deeply toasted brown sugar encrusted caramelized brown bread crust and a citrus note somehow that is a bit like Meyer lemon or not quite floral orange zest. As it warms I get a fair amount of woodiness to it and the spice notes become quite dominant.

The tastes begin with caramelized and toasted malt character up front that quickly yields to an ample spiciness and a woody character to it. As it warms it continues to get quite spicy and seems to be a bit too sharp at times; woody notes also become a bit burdensome on the palate.

Mouthfeel is medium to light bodied with medium carbonation. The finish also has a brightness to it from a lemon zest like flavor, though the spices seem to slow this down a bit.

Overall this was a huge miss for me. The flavor profile is too spicy and sharp to be enjoyable even if you were going to pair this with food. The spiciness clashes too much with the toasted, slightly roasted malt character as well.

Pour - Dark chestnut with a slight yellow tinted head.

Smell - With a smell of yams (with the marshmallow topping), hints of cinnamon, and birch.

Taste - Going in to it i thought it was going to be heavy and super flavorful beer. I found it to be the opposite. Light mouth feel. Flavors of cinnamon and yams, no big hints of pumpkin in my opinion.

Please note. I DO NOT LIKE PUMPKIN BEER, and did not read the label before buying. Not one i would recommend.

Brown pour with thin sheen of cream head. No retention and no lace.

Nose is quite understated. Light roasted pumpkin seed, toffee, and a bit of citrus. Nice enough.

Understated flavor as well. Flat cola flavor. Get bits of roast pumpkin and a bit of dark coffee.

Feel starts strong, but finishes thin.

Maybe they tried to hard ...

Review from 2/22/12-on tap at Blind Tiger in NYC: pours dark brown with a small tan head that left decent lacing.

Mild nose, it was sweet, with caramel, grains, cinnamon toast, light floral hops, herbs, and then what seems like yam or pumpkin; started reading the profile at the bar after a few sips and the ingredient list was quite a combo that worked well together.

Tastes of sweet malt, cinnamon, floral hops, caramel, light syrup, roasted grains, lemon, coriander, light spices like pepper, pumpkin, peat moss, grass and hay; very complex and flavorful, smooth and easy drinking, this is an odd mix in a very good way that was well balanced, yet nothing was overpowering which to me was a good thing.

Mouthfeel is rich, smooth and roasty, with nice citrus flavors, little to no carbonation, and a light body that goes down very easy.

Highly drinkable, this is a unique beer that hides the ABV well and goes down incredibly easy. A high recommendation if you can find this as it was just so damn smooth for s pumpkin beer that it needs to be tried.

Often released as a fall seasonal, Pumpkin Ales are quite varied. Some brewers opt to add hand-cut pumpkins and drop them in the mash, while others use puree or pumpkin flavoring. These beers also tend to be spiced with pumpkin pie spices, like: ground ginger, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, and allspice. Pumpkin Ales are typically mild, with little to no bitterness, a malty backbone, with some spice often taking the lead. Many will contain a starchy, slightly thick-ish, mouthfeel too. In our opinion, best versions use real pumpkin, while roasting the pumpkin can also add tremendous depth of character for even better results, though both methods are time-consuming and tend to drive brewmasters insan

Ok, This lives up to the style to a T. Pours a dark dark brown with a tan head that goes away fast. Decent lacing.

Smells of distant dank bark and spices I can not decipher. A very nice something sweet in there. Nothing really stands out for me.
Tastes very sweet up front. Bark, sweet raisins, pumpkin, and various gourds flavors.

Best part of this conglomeration is the sweet semi-thick moutfeel that has awesome carbonation!

Pours a dark amber/chestnut brown color with golden orange edges and a one finger light beige head that slowly settles into a lasting ring.  Streaks of lace left behind.

Sweet, slightly spicy aroma with lots of pumpkin, autumnal spice and toasted malt.  Pumpkin purée along with cinnamon, clove and ginger followed by caramel, toast and hazelnut.  

Medium bodied with a dry herbal presence that lingers throughout into a  medicinal finish.  Not really all that sweet with more of a vegetal pumpkin/yam presence with some dry, zesty spice.  Hints of toasted pumpkin seed, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and clove followed by some caramel, toast, rye and a strange medicinal finish.  Kind of a mess.

Thanks to screamforme for sending this extra along in a recent trade...

With Autumn not coming along as fast as I'd like it to, I thought I might help it along by popping this one this AM...

Nice dark copper pour with a creamy head... Looking thru the glass, there's an unmistakable fall look to this...reddish and deep... Nice...

A brown sugar/toffee-like aroma seems to dominate through and through... Hints of the birch surface here and there along with some of the spices... Not getting any of the verbena... For a pumpkin ale, it does little to reinforce the gourd's presence as I'm not finding it anywhere...

A little spiciness from the rye malt is present front and center with a caramel sweetness on the finish... I'm not sure about this... It speaks fall but not really pumpkin... Sort of an anomaly... Its good but not great like it should be considering the breweries involved...

Honestly? A little disappointing... Its just sort of middle of the road to me... Too little pumpkin ale and too much brown ale...

S: smells floral and slightly piny with some slight sweetness and spice notes
T: spice and slight pumpkin up front with a bit of hop bitterness, decent sweetness from the malt throughout and aftertaste is slightly toasted malt and faintly chocolatey with a bit of spice
M: smooth and slightly creamy with soft carbonation. very nice mouthfeel
O: not very pumpkiny and hops are a bit heavy handed even with some age. Not a bad beer and done in the stone regimen of hop scheduling. Nice in that it's different but not what you want if you plan on trying to drink a pumpkin pie.

Had this beer at our tasting session last night in Farmington, NM.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tasting glass. Big nose of pumpkin pie spice. Nutmeg, cinnamon, clove. Maybe I'm getting that from the fenugreek...whatever that is. Pours a deep brown with an ample 1" of tan thick head. Retention is good, but appears to be somewhat oily. Taste was more bitter than I expected. The pumpkin flavor was not over the top. Adequate carbonation. Decent beer overall. Certainly not a beer I'm dying to seek out and have again.

A 12oz bottle picked up at Green's in Columbia, SC

A - A dark copper/brown, with not much clarity. 1 finger of head, and a tiny amount of lace.

S - Birch, which almost smells like tree bark, and lemon oil totally dominate

T - The birch dominates again, with an aftertaste of pumpkin and yam. Spiceds from the pumpkins/yams are prevalent too. Pretty tasty.

M - Medium bodied, well carbonated.

O - It really comes across as a fruit beer to me. Not my favorite style, but I love the expirimentation.

A: A dark walnut color with a solid 1.5-finger tan head
S: Brown sugar, yams, a bit nutty & a bit of pine oil
T: Walnuts at first, followed by nutmeg, yams. A bit of citrus/bitch comes through towards the end with just a kiss of hops.
M: Medium-bodied but not remarkable.
O: I think this is pretty tasty. Not as pumpkin-driven as many fall-seasonal beers, but the spice/other components add a nice touch.

A- Pours a clear deep amber-brown with a finger of foamy, off-white head

S- Pumpkin spices, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, come light citrus as well, very warm and inviting

T- Pumpkin pie spices at the start, some good balancing dry bitterness that lingers throughout, malt comes in after the middle with a buttery crustiness, reminds me almost of a pie crust, finish is lightly bitter and malty

M- Moderate carbonation and a light to moderate body, some dryness and warmth

O- The aromas I got were excellent and really started the beer off on a positive note, look and mouthfeel were good, taste was pretty good in my opinion, good balance between the sweetness and spice and some hop bitterness. My only complaint is that I was expecting more complexity given the list of odd ingredients on the bottle, still a good beer overall though

Something different. The pumpkin was well in the secondary of taste to the herbs and slight bitterness and woodiness.Lots of nutmeg and some cinammon. I liked it and could drink this anytime, particular at this level of sessionability. Generous head, smooth drinker.

Bottle purchased from Ledgers Liquors in Berkeley, CA.

Pours a deep, dark brown colour, immaculately clear, with a big, frothy head of orange-white, pocked foam. Lacing is sticky and excellent. Decent body. Overall, it's a damn good-looking beer.

Nose is spicy and strong, with a peppery bite coming through and mingling with a hoppy note that could well be the Motueka. Underneath, there's certainly a pumpkin pie sweetness, giving a roasted, starchy pumpkin note along with smoother vanilla and cinnamon. It's a really lovely-smelling Pumpkin ale. I hope it tastes as good.

It's close, but as I feared, only brewing this to 5% ABV means it lacks much sweetness and body. But still, there are nice things about it. The pumpkin still gets a dominant part to play, leaving a pleasant vegetative note on the mid to back palate, and the spices are nicely integrated, leaving some vanilla sugar and a bite slightly like aniseed swinging around the place.

Feel is weak, in fact, depressingly so given the other characters of the beer.

Not a bad drop all up, and in fact, there are some lovely points to it. Unfortunately, it fails to deliver on its promise, and while it's certainly an above average Pumpkin Beer, it doesn't really cut it put up against some of the great other beers from these collaborators.

Picked up a bottle from Total Wine in late March for $3.49. Call me a sucker for Stone collaborations! My guess is that it was bottle back in the fall.

Beer poured a nice stout off white head that had some good legs.

Nose was strong lemon with hints of pumpkin spice.

Taste was hop forward, strong lemon with a low level pumpkin and yam.

Mouthfeel is medium and decently carbonated but not overly smooth.

Overall i like this brew, it is pretty funky but in a good way. Reminds me a bit of less boozy version of DFH Pumpkin Ale.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a New Belgium globe. Pours a deep copper color with a minimal amount of off-white head. The aroma has slight pumpkin notes along with some lemon and herbs. The taste definitely is "earthy", with the birch standing out. Some faint notes of caramel and pumpkin spices as well. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied with a decent amount of carbonation. The beer finishes very crisply and goes down smooth.

Overall, it is a solid beer that is worth a try because of its uniqueness.
