As with any good epic, herein lies the promise of larger-than-life experiences, heroics and twists & turns as the adventure unfolds. These bottle-conditioned ales are specifically designed to be aged until sometime after December 12th, 2012. Provided you can wait that long. At that time, enjoy them in a "vertical" tasting. Each one unique to it's year of release. Each with its own "twist & turn" in the plotline. Each one released one year, one month and one day from the previous year's edition. To remind you, the remaining dates are: 12.12.12

Dark cinnamon brown with a muted glow capped smallishly to about a finger height with a bone white firm foam that slips off slowly leaving large trace amounts of patchy thin sheeting lace across the goblet.

Soft aroma of malty sweetness thats a bit of bright raisin and date, but dullly set, mixing with some duller bread notes. Lots of bell pepper spice shines through as it warms and brings in a bit of layering to its otherwise plainish malty fruity nose.

Taste brings in much more complexity then what the aroma tends to lead on with, as a much more, well defined peppery chili pepper and bell pepper sweet spicyness percolates the front end and slips off into a tender Belgain fruity breadyness of malty soothingness. Cookie spices of vanilla, molasses, cinnamon, and ginger all brim about the edge of some eager fruit bread laced with raisin, starfruit, apricot, and date. What I like most is how it all fits amoungst a firm yet dulled yeastyness that's both earthy dry yet sweetish. Quite a nice taster.

Bold medium body with a wholesome malt backbone promised by earthy dry yeastyness and lots of fun spices mixing about in its malty sweetness.

A wonderful treat of an Ale! Lots of potential for aging with its beefy 9+%. Will be interesting to see what developes as it sits even longer.

On tap at When Pigs Fly in Kittery. In a pint glass the beer was a red/orange/brown color with a small tan head.

Sweet malt and spice aroma. Warming in my nose.

The tastes worked well together. Caramel malt and clove. Chile present, warm, pleasant.

I enjoyed this beer. Nothing over the top, just a nice melange.

Will drink this again.

A- This beer pours a slightly dense dark caramel body with a sticky light tan head and a few random bubbles popping out of the body.

S- The rich caramel aroma has some dried chilies to follow with a soft chili vegetable note that lingered.

T- The nice chili flavor blends with a more full caramel flavor that has some woody cinnamon flavor that pokes through as the beer warms. There is gentle chili warmth that lingers. As the beer opens there is some green herbal chili flavor that comes through softly.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with no alcohol heat and a gentle fizz in the finish

O- This beer has a nice caramel malt flavor that is supported by chili and cinnamon. It has just a touch of sweetness making it a nice barleywine with chili and cinnamon. I don’t get any yeast character that would be “Belgian inspired”.

A- This beer pours a deep slightly dense auburn hue with a bubbly creamy light tan head that last a good bit.

S- The aroma of abbey yeast esters and some dark toasted malt takes on a vegital aroma that turns into poblano chillies as it opens up. There are some nice dark candy notes in the finish that remind me of a nice Dubble.

T- The roasted poblano chilies has a soft warmth that mixes with dry cinnamon and some dark malt hints that are a touch on the sweet side. The finish has a hearty pepper heat and hops bitterness that linger gently after each sip.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a full fizz and a warm somewhat hided alcohol heat due to the chile heat.

O- The full chili flavor is more vegital with a soft capsican warmth and is very well balanced with a very soft cinnamon quality that I wouldn't have picked up on if it wasn't on the bottle. This beer has a lot of nice qualities of a Dubble with a chili warmth for support. It paired really nice with winter squash and pot roast. Good balance of flavors.

Poured from a bottle into an oversize wine glass.

A – A nice ruby-brown color. Not crystal clear, but not overtly cloudy either. Thin eggshell-colored head, which faded almost instantly. Moderate lacing.

S – Cinnamon and spice, specifically chiles. I’m also picking up some scent of Belgian sugars/yeast. Maybe a hint of nutmeg?? Smells inviting.

T – Wow! Complex. Like a trappist monk had a baby with a Tijuana whore. Predominant flavor is spice, with cinnamon claming the top spot fading into a mild saltiness from the chilies, which then bring just the slightest amount of heat to the tongue. Balanced by sweet Belgian yeast which brings banana esters to the table that come out even more when it warms. 9.4% abv??? Where is this alcohol they speak of, because you sure can’t taste it here. Slightly metallic/astringent aftertaste. Totally unique and bordering on delicious.

M – Full bodied. Carbonation is just enough so that this beer coats the mouth without becoming too heavy or syrupy. They nailed it here.

O – I thoroughly enjoyed this for its uniqueness if nothing else. Definitely couldn’t drink more than one at a session and I don’t know that I’d rush right out to buy another, but I’m definitely glad I bought this bottle. Not a beer to rush through, but to be savored. I would love to try this after it ages to see how it matures.

Crystal clear (you can read through it) deep amber with a 3 1/2 finger tan head. It looks pretty awesome in my Duvel tulip.

Unmistakable chili pepper backed up by the cinnamon and Belgian yeast. Sometimes almost a smokey aroma, and coffee. The chili is potent enough to give the nose a light tickle.

Sweet malts and tart hops upfront, but the chili peppers soon take over. Strong bitternes: a combination of the hops and the pepper. It finishes on the dry/tart side.

Medium-bodied. Some light peppery heat in the mouth and more heat/heartburn in the throat, from both the pepper and the alcohol. Slightly drying on the tongue.

A great change of pace. I especially enjoyed the contrast with the 2 sqaures of the Lindt Intense Orange chocolate bar that I sampled.

This time a very hard pour yielded a 5 finger head that receded fairly quickly leaving some moderate lacing. I'm calling it deep amber to ruby now.

The aroma is pretty consistent with my previous review except I don't really get any coffee.

Again, the taste is like before, but this time, the bitterness seems to be all pepper.

Ditto on the mouthfeel.

Overall, this is pretty much the same as I remember it. Though the pepper is dominate, it meshes well with the other flavors. Well-rounded. I'm letting my precious rating stand.

Appearance - A darker shade of auburn, with notable carbonation. The initial fluff of head from the pour quickly is reduced to just a thin sliver barely covering the beer below. Lots of carbonation though.

Smell - The aromas springing forth from this are amazing. What comes to mind immediately is fresh pear, apple cinnamon, buttery rolls, maple syrup, and a hint of fresh chili pepper spice. My expectations for the flavor have just been kicked up a notch. As the beer warms up, I'm picking up much more of the chili peppers, as if there literally is hot sauce contained within.

Taste - Before I go any further I have to state that this is actually my first chili beer, and it's proving to be a very interesting and fun experience. I'm glad this one has rested for a year or so. That Belgian yeast and dark fruit flavor comes and goes in a flash, and then one might as well think that the drink is a Bloody Mary. The pear and cinnamon flavor lingers as the icing on the cake.

Mouthfeel - This is a relatively medium bodied beer despite the ABV. It's not very apparent how strong the alcohol content really is. The finish is kind of faint, and eventually I realize its rather dry as well.

Overall - Again, this is one of the most interesting beers I have had... as for a recommendation, I would say if you're not a fan of Bloody Marys, do not buy. Somehow Stone pulls off this Belgian Bloody Mary hybrid though... I like it, and I'm glad I still have another bottle!

22 oz. bottle poured into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a clear, darker amber color, but is ruby through the light. Minimal filmy off-white head and very little visible carbonation.

Smell: Good malt aroma with some fruit-like sweetness, and a hint of yeast. I think I can get a slight whiff of the peppers.

Taste: Pleasant malt flavor (carramel) up front, which gradually gives way to some cinnamon and mild yeast flavors towards the finish. There's a bit of bitterness in the aftertaste. It takes a few sips for the chilies to register, but they add a nice, additional dimension to the taste, and gives it a mildly spicy aftertaste as well.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and quite smooth; very mild carbonation.

Drinkability: Strong ABV but little to no alcohol present in the taste.

I quite enjoyed this one - the yeast was quite mild, and the chilies were a nice touch.

This review was written about a bottle that was aged over a year. I aged it because the new bottles were somewhat overwhelming.

Poured from a bomber into a tulip. Super dark orange/ golden brown with little head and no retention or lacing.

The aged smell is more subdued than the new smell. Still bubblegum,cinnamon, and chile but not near as pronounced based on my recollection.

The taste is not the assault on the palate as I remember from a year ago. Chile beer to start with a somewhat hoppy malt middle and a fairly clean aftertaste. Very pleasant and very different. Unlike any other beer I have ever had. I guess you could call it a Belgian strong ale but its unlike any other beer I have ever had.

Mouthfeel is okay. Good carbonation and as usual it smoothes out as it warms.

Overall a good beer and super different. I'm glad I aged it as it did mellow with time. The new version was pretty close to over the top.

Served on tap at Jupiter restaurant in Berkeley CA.

Appearance - Stone VEA 11 appears a very deep enticing hue of reddish amber, almost like a red ale.

smell- it's a whirlwind of fruit, belgian yeastiness, and of course the cinnamon and chile that make this beer special.

taste - Pretty much a thoughtful interpretation of a strong belgian ale. High alcohol and belgian yeasts blend nicely with the chile, cinnamon, and sour notes.

mouthfeel - to me this beer had the sharp feel of a red ale, but without the sourness. Its delicately carbonated, and has the expected texture of a fine belgian ale.

overall - an interesting take on a classic style, high quality, and as others have said, a palate overload. I wouldnt expect much less from Stone, and this beer only being brewed one time, if you ever see it, TRY IT!

Poured into a Duvel glass.

Pours a mahagony dark brownish red. Nice fluffy puckered light tan head. Head settles to a nice layer the whole drink and leaves good lace. Good looks here.

Brew smells of Belgian spices and sugars. Dark fruits, bananas, yeasts, cloves and some nice spices. Good smelling brew.

Brew is complex; spicy, yeasty, dark fruits and touched off with cinnamon and chili spices. Brew starts of creamy from the nice head that sits atop, then makes way for some subtle prickly spice and cloves and banana and dark fruits and malts in the middle. Brew finishes dry and mellow. Wow great stuff here.

Stone is a world class brewer and this brew is right in their style; complex, big and filled with everything a beer geek would love. I wish I had the patience to let it age. Oh well I will have to pick up more to do that. Stellar stuff here.

Live review. Poured from the 22 oz. bomber that I bought on 11 11 11 at Save-On Tobacco & Beverage in Mentor for $8.99 into a clean, clear glass and cellared in the bottom of my fridge until now. I was trying to hold out until the recommended date of 11 11 12 but I wanted this review to be my number 1,111 for obvious reasons. Hmm…”Ale Brewed with Anaheim Chiles and Cinnamon” stamped on the side of the bottle. Sounds interesting! A special mention to my nephew Michael whose 22nd birthday was 11.11.11!

A Big, creamy and very “Stone” head that lingers satisfyingly for a while atop a dark amber or even red copper body that is translucent. Good look. 4.0

S Chiles are in the front for me. I get some cinnamon in the distance and no alcohol in the smell for me despite the healthy 9.4% ABV mentioned on the label. Nothing if not an interesting, uncommon smell to a beer. 4.0

T The chiles and cinnamon are there in the proportions that I smelled but then there is a significant wash of medium roast malt, sweet nectar goodness that washes over with every sip. This is an exceptionally good tasting beer with plenty going on to keep one’s interest up. 4.5

M Moderately thick with that syrupy malt goodness and the heat from the chiles. There may also be some “heat” from the alcohol but it is not obvious, eclipsed by the other strong tastes going on. This is an exceptional feel. 4.5

D/O Drinkability is not that good. I will finish the bomber but this is one big beer and I do not believe that I would want more in an evening. Overall this is an excellent beer, a real asset to the Vertical Epic Series and possibly one of my favorite. 4.0

Appearance is nice, with a thick tan head that does not lace much, but what is really interesting is while the primary color of the beer is brown, its got a rather interesting red hue to it.

Aroma is subdued, I have tried to let it warm up slightly, but what is there is very interesting, an abudnance of cinnamon, and a touch of the chili peppers. It sort of reminds me of a fresh baked bread with peppers mixed in, and the aroma is quite sweet.

Taste is spectacular, the cinnamon is very present coming accross as almost chocolately, the peppers are there but not really spicy, but adding a nice flavor profile. Taste is incredibly well defined and robust but mostly consists of those notes.

Mouth feel is nice, coats nicely.

Overall an incredibly enjoyable beer!

After staring at this bottle the past year in my fridge, its finally time! Waited a little longer than the 12-12-12 date to coordinate a online tasting together with my BA in crime andrenaline. STOKED!
A - poured into a tall tulip, itsa murky purple brown hue, two finger of head settled at a solid cover, very consistent lace ring
S - big dark Belgian fruity aromas of candied plumb and raisin, some bready yeast, then the chilli builds and keeps building, and is then met by cinnamon to produce a big sweet and spicy finish
T - plumb and pear fruitiness with some yeasty funk opens it up, quickly turns to a sweet heat chili flavour with an oily aspect, just a hint of a boiled veggie flavour that seems to be part of the deal with most chili beers but its light and passes quickly, the cinnamon adds a sweet and spicy aspect that also brings out the chili heat a little more, finishes with some light peppery hop notes and a bready quality, and just a touch of chili lasting way late in the finish
M - big and rich with less than medium carbonation, creamy and super smooth throughout with the chili heat just lingering late in the finish as you have more sips, i didn't try it upon purchase but i'd imagine the ABV has mellowed significantly as you would never guess its high octane
O - I must say i'm proud of myself for having waiting until the best after date to crack this, well worth the wait. I'm only recently started to put together some brews to age and this is really my first try of anything aged, great experience, can't wait to make a trip south of the 49th parallel and grab the 12-12-12, along with one or two for my homie andrenaline!

Opened on 11/13/12 shared with a friend and poured into a tulip glass.

Only bought 2 when they came out and didnt drink them so this is my first taste.

Appearance: pours almost a light brownish and cloudy, small amount of light getting though. 1 finger off white head dissapated quickly, some lacing

Aroma: bready, malty, belgiany, sweet smell. not getting much chili or cinnamon in the nose.

Taste: very mild belgian taste, maybe the year of age mellowed it out. Get a hint of spice and clove, Really nice sweetness but not too sweet then folowed by the chili in the back of the mouth and slightly boozy as it warms your chest up a little.

Overall: Great tasting beer, Definitely worth the wait. Lots of complex flavors, almost too rich for my palate to dicipher.

Had this on tap at The Petrol Station in Houston, review from notes.

Poured a hazy burnt amber with no head.

Cinnamon, bananas, clove and chiles make up the aroma. Very interesting. The chiles give it a certain Sex Panther quality... stings the nostrils (in a good way).

Taste follows the nose for the most part... Cinnamon, bananas and chiles dominate the palate. Cinnamon and bananas right of the back with the chiles making up the back end. This beer is complex as all hell. The flavors are all very distinct but they work extrememly well together. Very tasty.

Medium bodied with a copious amount of carbonation.

I will admist that this is the absolute worst sounding beer I've ever had... Cinnamon, bananas and chiles sound like a clusterfuck of a beer but this beer makes it work. Just like an onion, this beer has some serious layers and they are all delicious

Poured from a 22oz. bottle into a stemmed La Fin Du Monde glass.

The color is a clear dark amber with s finger and a half of foamy brownish head ans some slight lacing left on the glass.

The smell is truly spicy in the aroma and gives off some Belgian aroma like a triple with some banana and some fig aroma.

The taste is Belgian at first then take a left turn to drop some chili spice on me. The more Belgian flavor comes out with some nice malt sweetness and a bitter hop flavor in the back. The taste swings back and forth with some nice banana flavor with a hot flavor that is like cinnamon more in the nose then in the flavor but comes out now when I am sipping rather then when I was trying to smell this beer.

The feel of this beer is big from the ABV to the complex flavors that is throughout the flavor of this beer. This is something that is new and amazing, a Belgian beer with some chili spices.

On-tap at Kelly Korner Tavern in a shaker pint. On to the beer:

Looks brownish amber in color with a small white head which leaves spots of lacing around the glass. There are a lot of chili peppers in the nose, and just when you think it's one-dimensional, out comes a fruity Belgian yeast character that hits the spot.

I anticipated a really spicy beer, and while the spice is there, it doesn't kill your paalte. In fact, it's quite complimentary to the Belgian yeast characteristics. Dark fruits like plums and raisin, also some unsweetened chocolate. There's little (if any) sign of the alcohol, which at the time I suspected was just under 8%, not the listed 9.4%.

To my surprise, I liked this quite a bit.

Picked up a bomber at Calandro's and poured into an imperial pint.

It's a ruby red color, clear with a finger or so of off white head. There isn't much lacing but some good looking pooling.

The smell is rather malty with some strong cinnamon notes. There's a little Belgian floral hop note in there as well. Pretty appetizing.

The taste is a lot more chile in there with a flavor that closely resembles a Belgian dubbel. I'm a big fan of the interaction.

Very easy to drink with a minimal alcohol note despite a good abv.

Another winner from Stone.

General: Got this from the Stone Beer Garden in downtown San Diego. I couldn't believe that they still had a couple of bottle of this so I picked up a couple. Poured it into my New Belgium tulip glass to enjoy tonight!

Appearance: Dark brown with ruby color with an off white head. The head disappears pretty quickly and doesn't have much lacing.

Aroma: There is an aroma of the red wine bottle that this was aged in, pretty nice. There is a touch of something spiced too. Very nice!

Mouthfeel: A little thinner than I would expect but still very nice. Carbonation is pretty mild

Taste: This is really strange. I'm not too sure about this flavor. There is a hint of the cinnamon and chills but the biggest flavor is the red wine barrel aging.

Overall: It's good, I enjoy it but it's not something that I will want all that often. It's unfortunate that this is retired because it's kind of weird and quirky and it would be fun every once in a while.

A: Poured into a FFF teku a hazy copper with a minimal few millimeters of foam that quickly recedes leaving a minimal amount of lacing - most likely from the wet glass

S: Spices - cinnamon and clove, some chile, tart red wine, and a bit of funk.

T: Tart fruits and red wine at first, immediately giving way to a subtle yet noticeable hint of chile spice and detectable funkiness. After a few moments, the Cinnamon starts to reveal itself, along with a definite peppery zing from the Belgian yeast, and more herbal notes. I also am detecting a buttery sweetness, which is an interesting companion to the tannicity from the red wine barrels. Finishes with a pleasant and crisp hop bitterness that emerges from the peppery and herbal spice, which nicely balances the buttery sweetness present in the middle. After exhaling I get more pepper, cinnamon, spice, andsome medicinal phenol.

M: Oddly buttery and sweet, considering the tart and tannic aspects from the yeast and red wine barrels.

O: A very unique and interesting beer that really pushes the limits of what yeast can do, without overdoing what many brewers chose to push too hard. Perfect level of funk, and I really was intrigued at how it could be so buttery, and yet also have a somewhat tannic as well as tart finish. Truly an interesting blend. Thats why time after time, Stone fails to disappoint…..but maybe thats just homerism

Drinking it on tap at the flying saucer in San Antonio.

A- the beer is a deep amber color with a thick inviting head. Tons of lace is left on the side of my snifter.

S- pepper and spice. Anaheim chili peppers and beer. I'm into it the aroma is different.

T- up front I am hit with flavor from the peppers. The pepper flavor is awesome. Anaheim peppers are known for their great flavor, so I assume it was a good choice of pepper on the part of stone. It is a big Belgian style beer and the next thing I taste is the big malt flavor. The beer finishes with a moderate dose of hops.

M- the chili peppers dominate but with awesome subtle flavors form the malts.

D- were can I go form here its over 9%for ABV and by taste buds just had sex with this beer.

Bottle to a snifter. Just had some spicy soup, hoping that will compliment the chilies

Pours a dark brownish red. Half a finger of khaki foam recedes rather quickly with moderate carbonation, moderate lacing. Pretty run of the mill

Smells of chillies, tart cherry and apple, cinnamon, grainy yeast, some clove, brown sugar, and a touch of alcohol. Some real complexity, pretty solid

Taste follows the nose well, strong chili and a mildly tart cherry, some hops, cinnamon, sweet malt, and a tinge of alcohol. Mild clove and brown sugar have a solid after taste, everything comes together really well. The blend of mild spice and sour is interesting, and works pretty well

Feel is solid as well, medium body, mild spice and sour. Alcohol is well hidden for being so high, nice dry finish. Pretty drinkable

This stuff is really good, complimented dinner pretty well. I've got two more, it will be interesting to see where age takes them

Poured into my tulip glass. This beer pours a hazy, cloudy, deep amber mahogany brownish red color with a nice fluffy slightly tan colored head about an inch thick when poured. Settles to a nice thick ring lining the inside of the glass and pretty good lacing. Aromas of spices such as cinnamon, grains of paradise and clove among others, dark fruits such as apple, a hint of plum, grape, banana, and a bit of hops. Interesting and complex, flavor, especially as the beer warms. It starts out with a slightly sweet and slightly roasted caramel malt flavor that immediately gives way to the aforementioned fruits and spices, that is rounded out with a touch of citrus hop bitterness. There is also a slight hint of salt and vinegar. This beer certainly does, in at least some degree, have a nice Merlot red wine like quality to it too. A very unique beer indeed. Has a crisp, medium to full bodied, dry mouthfeel with light to moderate carbonation. A slow sipper to be sure. To quote my friend Erich Lasher, who is one of the owners and bartenders at a favorite local bar of mine called La Cave Du Vin, "This beer...its weird!" Yes it is Erich, yes it is! In a good way too. I am quite curious to see what some agine does to the bottle I have in by cellar.

On tap at Exit 6 in Cottleville, MO

A: Served a clear mahogany color with a small head with some lacing.

S: Aroma of cinnamon and spice with a trace of sweetness. Very enticing aroma.

T: Nice flavor of cinnamon, bit of spice and trace of fruity sweetness. Very subtle bitterness and a dry finish.

F: Medium body, very smooth and clean. There is no hint of the alcohol, just a pleasant warming feeling. Excellent balance.

O: One of the best beers I have had this year. Can't beat fresh on tap.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 10/2011. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy deep ruby red color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, plum, fig, pear, cinnamon, clove, caramel, toast, dark candi sugar, chili pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast, dark malt, and cinnamon/chile spice notes; with good strength. Taste of raisin, plum, fig, pear, cinnamon, clove, caramel, toast, dark candi sugar, brown bread, clove, chile pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Light chile heat/spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, plum, fig, pear, cinnamon, clove, caramel, toast, dark candi sugar, brown bread, chile pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, dark/bready malt, and cinnamon/chile spice flavors; with big robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth, fairly crisp, and lightly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding Belgian chile beer. All around fantastic complexity and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, dark/bready malt, and cinnamon/chile spice flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.
