When it came time to brew Bottleworks' 13th anniversary beer, we turned to Stone to brew this behemoth. "The Matts" traveled down to San Diego in December to help create this 13-hop, 13-grain monument to our 13 years of selling great craft beer!

cellared since whenever the hell this came out.

poured a murky brown without practically any head. aroma had a little bit of oxidation, but overall more grainy, chewy, raisin goodness. flavor was surprisingly smoky! i see there is some peat malt in there so that makes sense, but time seemed to amplify that aspect. a full-bodied and rich flavored ale. not sure if I set the bar too low, but was surprisingly happy with this dusty bottle!

Pulled this bottle from a dusty corner of the cellar...

Look: Darkest brown, but not black: ebony, with glints of ruby around the edges when held up to light. Khaki head. Fine bubbles interspersed with larger ones.

Smell: Figs, dates, just a hint of coffee...and booze.

Taste: hoppy (surprising for its age), oak, sherry (my imagination?), alcohol, arrogance, mellow citrus (no bite); a full, round flavor that evolves; sweeter at the beginning and drying toward the end--an aftertaste that seems to go straight from the tongue to prompting the hand to reach for the glass for another sip, without passing through the brain.

Feel: light but sufficient carbonation--fine bubbles.

Overall: Looking at other BAs' reviews, I may have done the right thing to wait. This was a complex and completely satisfying bastard of an American Strong Ale.

Aged 2 years. A very good American Strong Ale. Poured into a pint glass, a dark brown color with some ruby highlights coming through at the sides and bottom of the glass. Nice big light brown head with good retention and thick bands of brown lacing on the glass.

Smell and aroma are nicely balanced between sweet caramel and bready malts and moderate piney hoppiness. The flavor is rich with some coffee and chocolate malt. Overall slightly sweet but not annoyingly so.

Mouthfeel is rich and malty with some balancing bitterness.

I don't know how this beer was fresh, but with two years on it, it is a fine slow sipper!!!
