Style: Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 12.50%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Brewmasters Stone's Mitch Steele, Green Flash's Chuck Silva and Pizza Port Carlsbad's Jeff Bagby created this intensely malty brew named after an 18 mile stretch of asphalt uniting their three breweries.

Unfiltered and aged 16 months, 20% Highland Malt Whiskey Barrels, 40% Islay Malt Whiskey Barrels, 40% Lowland Grain Whiskey Barrels. Producing a complex beer with a harmony of rich flavors. Bitter oaky tones, sweet vanilla and maple flavors and earthy smokiness.

There are two different bottlings of this release. Batch #1 (Chuck/Jeff/Mitch Blend) and batch #2 (Wagner Blend). The Wagner Blend is higher in Highland Malt Whiskey and much lower in Lowland Whiskey.

Batch 01: Green Flash/Pizza Port Carlsbad/Stone Highway 78 Scotch Ale aged in Scotch Whisky Barrels: “Chuck/Jeff/Mitch” Blend (Released: 02.10.13) - 12.5% ABV

Batch 02: Green Flash/Pizza Port Carlsbad/Stone Highway 78 Scotch Ale aged in Scotch Whisky Barrels: “Wagner” Blend (Released: 02.10.13) - 12.2% ABV

Pours a virtually still dark amber color with little to no khaki colored head that recedes to leave some spotty lacing.

Aromas are all peat, scotch and booze initially. As it warms I get some darker fruits and toffee from the base beer and some estery lighter fruitiness. But make no mistake the peat and scotch barrel aging are the big contributors here.

The flavors follow the nose with a ton of peated maltiness and boozy scotch oaky flavors. The dark fruits and toffee and even a pear fruitiness are in the background but only pop out occationally over the charred oak and smokey peat flavors.

Mouthfeel is medium to heavy bodied due to the lackluster carbonation, which isn't a big factor and makes sense for this style. Finish is quite oaky and drying.

Overall this is a huge difference than the base beer and really only for fans of heavily barrel-forward beers or fans of peated scotch whiskey. The beer flavors are almost non-existent in this treatment.
