Tried this at the same time as the white wine barrel version. Personally, I think that the white barrel aging suited the original style better and resulted in a better beer. The red is by no means a bad beer, but it did not resonate as strongly with me as the white. With the red, some of the stronger flavors, astringency, and more distinct wood flavor covered up some of the more delicate flavors of the base beer. Still fantastically complex and a super easy drinker. A great variant of one of my favorite beers.

Served from tap in to a Trappe Door tulip. Poured a golden yellow-orange with a two finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount very slowly. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, dark fruit, earth, spice, wood, banana, and very subtle red wine. The flavor was of sweet malt, red wine, oak, spice, earth, and subtle funk. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty decent brew. The red wine was the star of the show on this one if I'm honest. Very spicy and earthy which is what you would expect from a red wine. The barrel added a slightly note to it but it definitely was as prominent as the wine itself. Made it very easy to drink for me as I enjoy red wine from time to time. Granted, it wasn't a life changing experience sadly.
