A "Black, Smoked Saison"? Uh, OK. Poured into straight pint glass. Poured a solid black color with almost an inch of medium brown head that had decent retention and light lacing.

The aroma blasted out as soon as the bottle was cracked open. A lot of smoke, some yeast and some roast were the dominant aspects. On the tongue all those things combined and clashed all across the palate. The things that Saisons so great are totally covered up by roast and an alcohol sharpness.

The body was thick and sticky, not Saison like at all. Drinkability was a bit rough, with the roast and alcohol being a less than pleasant combination. Overall, a perfect example of why you shouldn't do something just because you can. This beer is kind of a mess. I can't recommend it.

A - Brown pour with a thin foam head. Some carbonation is noted.

S - Slight burnt toast smell of roasted malt. There is a little bit of dried fruit smell that gives a sugary smell. Overall my take was that it smelled like a hickory BBQ sauce.

T - Really not sure here. I didn't get anything remotely resembling saison qualities. There was more of a malt presence and dry hop finish than what I expected. Some fig or raisin flavors were noted.

M - Feels relatively light and is easy to dink. Actually leaves a bit of a yeasty funk in the finish. Really a complex and quite odd beer.

O - A bit all over the place and I really don't know what the right classification for this would be. Many of the Stone collabs are out of the box concepts, but in this case I don't think I'd be looking to try this again.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Samuel Smith glass. Thin, dissipating head with minimal lacing. Brownish black in color, almost like a porter.

Not much going on in the smell, some sweet dark fruits, citrus hops. There is a bit of oak, though I don't know if this beer is wood aged.

Taste is decent, but first perception is this doesn't dry out and finish dry enough. Caramel malts are the initial taste with some citrus hops and a bit of resinous bitterness.

Mouthfeel is too thick and sugary. Beer definitely needed more attenuation.

Overall, I think this missed the mark for the Saison style.
