Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The IPA That Launched Generations of Hop Fanatics
First Release: August 1997

By definition, an India pale ale is hoppier and higher in alcohol than its little brother, pale aleā€”and we deliver in spades. Now one of the most well-respected and best-selling IPAs in the country, this golden beauty explodes with citrusy, piney hop flavors and aromas, all perfectly balanced by a subtle malt character. This crisp, extra hoppy brew is hugely refreshing on a hot day, but will always deliver no matter when you choose to drink it.

12oz bottle into Nonic Pint
bottled 1/19/17, about six weeks old
L- clear pale gold, with thin white foam cap, solid retention, gorgeous lacing as well
S- Piney and Citrussy, to the tune of tangerines, along with some sweet bready malt
T- solid malt backbone, followed by the citrus of the hops as well as some pine, and a load of alcohol on the finish
F- crisp and exceptionally smooth drinking
Overall, this is a crisp smooth IPA, nice drinking and all the one negative is the extreme alcohol fusels on the finish

Pours a lovely golden color with a modest head of very fine bubbles. Aroma is dominated with the scent of piney hops. Taste: bitter but not in a bad way, pine resin & malt, a little bit of sweetness too. . I'm not a fan of IPA's but I like this. Plenty of carbonation mixed with the spices flavor tickle the tongue.

Poured from 12oz bottle into Spiegelau IPA Glass. Bottled December 15th 2016.

L: Clear honey gold amber, great two finger head, excellent retention with excellent lacing. Beautiful beer.

S: Lots of hop aroma, citrus, pine, and hints of floral and herbal and a spiciness.

T: Spicy hops first, herbal, pine, grassy notes. Decent malt backbone.

F: Very crisp, full bodied, thick and smooth with a oily slick feeling left on your tongue until it goes dry.

O: You really cant go wrong with most of what Stone has to offer and this "basic" IPA just proves that point, big strong flavors with a good body and mouthfeel make this a stellar beer.

Pours medium gold with a medium, thick, white head that lasts a while.

Smells tropical, citrus, sweet bready malt and light pine.

Tastes tropical and bready malt, light citrus and pine. Finish is dry with a bitter pine linger. Medium body with higher side of medium fizzy carbonation

I've had a few stone IPAs but this one is my favorite. Lots of varying citrus such as orange and lemon along with incredibly balanced hop bitterness. This is one of the best widely available IPAs out there in my opinion.

After walking past this beer for 3 years I finally decided to throw it into a mix a six and give it a try. I am not usually the biggest fan of IPA's, I'm more of a stout and porter guy, although I have been venturing more into the IPA world and starting to enjoy them.
L: Stone IPA looks great, it pours a nice dark gold color with a bit of an amber tint to it and a head that fades pretty quick. There is decent lacing as you drink the beer.
S: I could not get a whole lot of of the smell other than the hops maybe a little bit of citrus but that's about it.
T: Very hoppy at least for me. I do not think that I would have liked this beer if I would have tried it 2-3 months ago but I am really trying to get into IPA's and I'm finding that I am starting to like them more and this hoppy beast was a pretty good brew for the style.
F: I actually really liked the mouthfeel for this one. To me it was kind of thick for an IPA and I actually really liked it.
Overall: A solid IPA that i would gladly drink again not my favorite but one of the better beers I have had in the style.
