Notes / Commercial Description:
The IPA That Launched Generations of Hop Fanatics
First Release: August 1997

By definition, an India pale ale is hoppier and higher in alcohol than its little brother, pale ale—and we deliver in spades. Now one of the most well-respected and best-selling IPAs in the country, this golden beauty explodes with citrusy, piney hop flavors and aromas, all perfectly balanced by a subtle malt character. This crisp, extra hoppy brew is hugely refreshing on a hot day, but will always deliver no matter when you choose to drink it.

Poured into a standard unmarked pint glass. I picked this up in Hudson and enjoyed it while cleaning out/organizing the cellar.

The color is a deep golden color with a light tan fluffy head that has great retention and leaves lacing on the side of the glass.

The nose is very hoppy, citrus and grapefruit and floral hops all shine in this one. It also gives off a strong cannabis like smell. This is pretty dang good.

The taste is dominated by hops, much like the nose, but there is also a significant malt backbone that comes through at cellar temperature. Very hoppy and straight forward, but very balanced and complex. Very tasty.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a light appropriate carbonation. Lingering bitter aftertaste.

This is a staple in the world of IPA's. It's affordable, and widely distributed (but not widely enough!). It's good enough to hang with the big boys (Sculpin, Pliny) and cheap enough to win out over them most of the time. What a great brew.

1st of 6 half liter Stones. Rare for these parts. Thanks OstrungT.

A rich amber pour with nitrous like fine fomy persistant head and lace.
Aroma Pine - taking it outdoors to admire its beauty its aroma seemed more predominatly that of pears. Alcoholic aroma noticable. Other aromas similar to its taste.
Strong beading of "silent bubbles" -those microscopic enough to move through a capilary as easily as a red blood cell.

Taste starting clean and crisp with sweetness offset by easily roused CO2 in middle ending in warming sweet caramel and perfect hops.

AFTERTASTE! I can only describe as a happy bee returning to is hive and doing an excited "waggle dance" on my tongue shedding hop resin and oils as it completes its figure 8s.

Reaching the end of this bottle is like loosing an old friend.

Pours out a beautiful amber with a nice white head. I don't like this quite as much as ruination, but it is still an awesome ipa! The hops pack the punch here, but the grain taste adds its charm too. Sooo smooth and so creamy. Feels so good. Tastes so good. A nice big stone IPA for all of us!

This IPA pours a bright copper/gold. It has a decent head that didn’t retain all that long. A nice lace did stick around after the head deteriorated. The nose is a bright, citrusy hops. This smells fresh, and really gives you a live feel. The taste is a floral/citrus balance on the front. You really don’t feel the malt until the back of the taste. It’s very good though. . It has a light feel, and a good drinkability. This is high on my list of summer beers.

Had this on tap today at RedBones. I can't change much except the head was great, and the hops in the beer led to an even better retention of the head, and a nice lace. Great floral lead on teh nose. Maybe a little bit more of a bite from the hops than the bottle usually gives.

12 oz bottle poured into a wine glass

Appearance: Golden orange color with a 1 inch white head. Clear beer, with no sediment to speak of. Small amounts of lacing are left behind in the wake of the head.

Smell: Fresh and floral. Moreso than Ruination. Generous dry hopping is iin effect, with many varieties in smells like. Aromas are peach, grapefruit, strawberry. Undertones are Rose, cut grass, and honeysuckle.

Taste: Sweet but bitter in the forefront. Flavors of raspberry are actually there. Maybe some other berry goodness in there too. The taste is dominated by hops though. A pleasant, easygoing balance of flavors.

Mouthfeel: Like Ruination, creamy and easy to swallow. Not overwhelmed with carbonation but there is still plenty of bittering hops to go around in the finish. You basically get a nice sprtiz of carbonation and then the creaminess takes over. And, unlike other IPAs, there ISN'T A HUGE drying effect on the palate.

Drinkability: Great. Beers like this deserve to be imbibed until ossification. Seriously, it is a great beer that I would consume a lot of if given the chance. How much for a keg? ;-)

22 oz bomber

Apperance: Head was thick, white and laced very nicely. The color was inviting. It was gold or mild apricot. The head lasted a while, but not long enough. It gave way to a patch-worked head. Some think parts and some thin parts. the rings were nice.

Nose: Man! Stone brews have the best smells. This one was all hops malt and a bit of fruit and flowers. It was hoppy at first and sweet at the end.

Taste: Carbonation was not rough, but opened the palate very well. Again, I get hops, a lot of malt, and some fruits at the end. The end leaves you with an organic leafy type of taste in the mouth. Very nice.

Notes: This is sooo drinkable. Not too bitter, but very malty.
