Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The IPA That Launched Generations of Hop Fanatics
First Release: August 1997

By definition, an India pale ale is hoppier and higher in alcohol than its little brother, pale ale—and we deliver in spades. Now one of the most well-respected and best-selling IPAs in the country, this golden beauty explodes with citrusy, piney hop flavors and aromas, all perfectly balanced by a subtle malt character. This crisp, extra hoppy brew is hugely refreshing on a hot day, but will always deliver no matter when you choose to drink it.

The popularity of this ale is earned. A near perfect blend of citrus and bitter hops. The color is one of the best I've seen, transparent but distinct.

Thought it tasted different recently and so read the fine print on the label; it's "Stone IPA 1.1" now; not the same taste. I'm done with it. They ruined (pun intended) Ruination with the "2" version, and my guess is that sales fell, so the brewery was a little more discreet with the labeling this time. Stone IPA 1.1 is now a routine IPA. Drinkable, certainly, but nothing special.

Backlog. 12 oz bottle. Smells of apricot, citrus, pine. Amber-gold color. Not much head or lacing. Nice bitterness. Tastes of fruit, pine. Low on the carbonation end. Very nice IPA.

The jazz standard. The repertoire classic.
The song you want to hear at the concert—that you patiently wait for.
A beat-up Ford that keeps running. A pair of worn-in jeans, now & forevermore.
It goes. You chug it. It disappears. You need more.
It pours golden. It shines. It doesn't fuss around.
It starts with pine, & introduces honey, malt, & a drop of lemon.
You're in a house in the woods, or riding a motorcycle on a highway.
A maltiness gestures. A bitterness engulfs.
In its warmness a fruitiness appears:
That famous fruity touch that other breweries seek to emulate, but not to copy.
& in that fruitiness the happiness of drinking Stone IPA appears.

Lt. lemon amber color, aroma hoppy, taste citrus, piney - stronger than expected. Lingering bitter aftertaste. Better very cold.

On tap at the beach. Poured into a plastic cup. Amber appearance with a nice head of foam. Smells of biscuit and faint pine needles. Stone India Pale Ale tastes mellow yet you can distinguish it from lager. It has a slight hoppy bite and a faint taste of pepper at the back of the throat. The mouth feel was a bit heavy in my opinion but not bad. At 7% abv it is a sipping rather than guzzling beer. I paired it with a lobster roll and coleslaw. Over all a solidly crafted beer. It is a tad bit expensive in the stores though. I'd give it a B+.
