Stone IPA (India Pale Ale)Stone IPA (India Pale Ale)

Brewed by:
Stone Brewing
California, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The IPA That Launched Generations of Hop Fanatics
First Release: August 1997

By definition, an India pale ale is hoppier and higher in alcohol than its little brother, pale ale—and we deliver in spades. Now one of the most well-respected and best-selling IPAs in the country, this golden beauty explodes with citrusy, piney hop flavors and aromas, all perfectly balanced by a subtle malt character. This crisp, extra hoppy brew is hugely refreshing on a hot day, but will always deliver no matter when you choose to drink it.

This is my revelation beer. 6 years ago, it convinced me I was a hop head. Today, my love for it has not waned and I enjoy it every time our paths cross. My favorite aspect is that it knows what it is. Hop heavy, bitter, piney, dry. In a craft where complexity is praised and valued, sometimes being consistent, simple, crisp and delicious wins.

A: Clear golden, with minimal head

S: fairly minimal aromatics in this stemless wine glass, I'll have to revisit as it warms a touch and there's a little more room in the glass... nope, never really develops.

T: A bitterness assault, resiny and piney in a particularly woody/vegetal way, like chewing on a sprig.

F: A little heavy bodied for a regular IPA. Lots of heavy, mouth-coating bitterness. Induced almost a bit of post-nasal-drip feeling in the throat.

O: In the classic style, no doubt, but not really what I feel like the modern IPA drinker is looking for.

One of the best examples of a good simple IPA. This is one of my go to beers for summer time. It isn't juicy like a Pliny or other top level IPAs, but is very drinkable and delicious.

12oz bottle into my Dogfish glass.

A: Pours a vibrant clear gold/copper with 1" white head that recedes fairly quickly. Retention is out-of-this-world. Lacing is middling.

S: Bready malt with some resinous hops underneath. A dab of grassiness is present.

T: Leads in with mild bready maltiness & a bit of pepper note. Mid palate is more of the same with increasing resinous hop character finishing with an off-sweet hop kick. Not bad.

M: Good, moderate carb. Surprisingly light & dry body with just a bit of oiliness.

O: Very solid, classic IPA.

This is my favorite Stone offering after Enjoy By. Very light drinker for a 6.9% IPA. Smell and taste is floral, some citrus, bready. I can pound these all day.

Clear dark amber with little head or lace, which is a surprise as the HB lidded stein usually promotes head formation.

The aroma is filled with pine tar, followed by citrus and an unexpected sweetness. Light floral notes are released with warmth.

Bitterness is substantial, while caramel, pine, and orange rind follow long into a lingering, bitter finish. This IPA is crisp and clean with grassiness middle to end that is accentuated with warming.

A well carbonated, full body with light alcohol, a satin texture and moderate astringency.

This IPA works well while sitting under a shade tree on a cool summer day. This is a fine relaxing beer that would work well after a day of yard work.

Light amber color with perfect amount of foam after pour. I will note that this beer is very hazy and had more sediment than I assume the beer normally has. The flavor is very appealing, better then your average IPA. It is decently balanced with slightly bitter floral citrus flavors forward followed by mellowing out in the middle with a slightly bitter hop finish.

Pour cloudy orange with 1 finger fluffy white head.

Aroma yields big pine and dankness.

Taste follows the nose. Big hit of pine, light citrus notes, followed by a massive hit of hop bitterness.

Overall solid IPA. However it isn't the best IPA I have tasted from stone. It is a tad bit unbalanced leading to an overagression of pine bitterness that could be toned down with a kiss more malt. I could see pairing this with a nice bbq pork chop glazed with bbq sauce. It gets a 90/100.

Pretty good IPA, classic West Coast notes of grapefruit and pine with just enough malt to keep it from being hop tea. Would definitely drink again, I can't believe I passed it up for so long.

Clear golden yellow like color. Little to no aroma that I could detect. Taste was extremely balanced, a little hoppy/citrusy with a tad bit of bitterness. Little bit of carbonation. Overall, an extremely smooth finish, an excellent IPA that I would definitely buy again.

A - Poured a semi-opaque dark golden color. Fluffy, 3 finger head, with good retention, a lot of lacing present.

S - Bitterness and hops are the main aromas of the beer. The bitterness is not to overwhelming and is mitigated by the sweet malt presence; well blended. A blend of citrus and various other fruits appear present; most dominantly grape. Hints of coffee aromas present as well. Very interesting, complex scented beer.

T - Very fresh, smooth and fairly straightforward tasting beer. A solid blend of hops and coffee notes finishing with various spices.

M - Light to medium bodied beer, averagely carbonated. Fresh and crisp finish with a mild hop aftertaste.

O - Great beer overall from a great company. A solid, bitter IPA that pairs well with a steak or burger.

I may have actually given this one better reviews, but Stone is one of those breweries that I hold to a higher standard. This is a good beer, but not nearly as good as most of stones offerings.

This IPA embodies the American style IPA. It has a definite hops flavor to it giving it that nice bitter IPA taste. It's a very stripped down IPA so if you're into the sweeter IPA's or the stronger citrus notes there probably not going to be found in this beer. Overall a really good IPA.

Hops at the forefront, in both aroma and taste. Piney aroma on top of hazy golden body with medium, creamy head. taste is astringent and bitter, and stays on the palate. Some lemony citrus notes are in the background. Excellent.

Across the board great beer. Couple I like better but solid. Slight malt and perfect blend of hop character. Not bitter at all on the finish. Overall a great Stone classic.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Shaker pint glass, "enjoy by" date 6-25-15.

APPEARANCE: pours a clear, dark golden color with one-finger white head that quickly dissipated until a thin, broken layer of small bubbles remained, there is a moderate amount of lacing on the glass, medium carbonation.

SMELL: flowers, sweet honey, citrus/grapefruit, pine, bread, very pleasant to the nose.

TASTE: the taste follows the nose, initially sweet honey and citrus then an assertive piney hop profile that really lingered.

PALATE: medium body and carbonation.

OVERALL: this is my second beer from Stone, the other was pale ale and I disliked it so much I avoided all their other beers until now. Clearly, that was a mistake, this is a very good IPA, it's more assertive than most but would appeal to anyone who enjoys the style, I would have this again for sure and will try more from this brewer.

I get it, it's very hoppy.. I'm an IPA person, but once you peel back all the hops from this there really isn't much there. Don't get me wrong, I love Stone and will drink these all night, but it's just not a particularly tasty beer.

Initially it is overwhelming, but that is what they are going for. Feels like I'm drinking a pine tree. After the first one, they are delicious. Just as any Stone beer is.

Found this at the Four Firkins in Minneapolis. The best by date suggests it's still good for another three weeks. Poured right from the fridge into my pint glass.

L: Pours a warm honey amber with about an inch-and-a-half of white, dense head that sticks around for a nice bit and leaves some cling on the glass. Clear, with lots of specks of particulate and moderate carbonation visible.

S: Pine hops are the prominent notes in the bouquet, along with some grapefruit and orange/tangerine. Some bready malt notes lingering underneath it all. Not a huge aroma to this one.

T: Assertive pine hop notes right out of the gate, with the caramel and bready malts working to keep things in check. A bit of citrus as the taste moves to the middle--some orange and grapefruit. There's also a bit of clear alcohol as it moves into the back. The close is probably my favorite part about this beer: there's nice resinous pine and much more assertive grapefruit rind that have a little stick and carry the aftertaste for a good long while.

F: On the heavier side for a single IPA, this one makes you feel like you're drinking a substantial beer. It's got smoothness/creaminess, but that quickly turns bright/bitter by the back end, leaving some substantial bitter on the palate. The carbonation is spot-on.

O: I wasn't sure if this one could live up to the hype for me, but it definitely did. This is an expertly crafted IPA that has beautiful straightforward hop flavors that really hit the tongue hard. For all of the big flavor, it still manages to deliver some complexity. I will definitely revisit this one again when I have the chance.

Taste: Caramel malt, pine, grass, grapefruit and lemongrass.
Body: Medium body and carbonation. Long, bitter finish.

Great IPA!

Damn near perfect IPA. I don't know what a perfect IPA taste like but I'd imagine this is pretty close.
The smell is fantastic and so aromatic. The pines and hops hits all your senses and begs to be drank. Tastes is perfectly balanced of floral, hops, citrus, grapefruit, pineapples, too much shit to name. I've been drinking this for years and buy in bulk.

This beer pours a slightly hazy golden burnt orange with a sudsy two finger off white head. Retention is fantastic and there are spots and rings of lacing left all over the glass. Smell is pine, grapefruit, tangerine and some sweet caramel malts. Taste is the same with a bitter finish. Feel is medium with a sticky resinous finish. Overall an excellent beer, one of the classics. Stone IPA and Torpedo were the two beers that really lead down the IPA rabbit hole.

Look- exactly what you expect from a miraculous ipa. Dark golden in color, lacing down the glass, and a medium thick pillowy head. Very inviting.

Smell- smells baseline. Underlying citrus but primarily floral, hoppy notes. To be honest, as spectacular as the taste is, isdexpect a more intense, piney smell. That being said, it smells like an ipa.

Taste- this is where this beer becomes legendary. When you order an ipa, you have certain expectations. Strong flavor, beautiful bitterness, and a smell that utters "buckle your seatbelts, this is about to get real." Stone ipa reminds you of why you avoid domesticated beers, and thrive for artistry. This beer, my friends, is one that you can consider one of the "royal ipa's"

Feel- Incredibly intense floral notes, yet this beer is incredibly light, and easy to drink. High carbonation, relatable to a cold soda on a hot day. This may not fall under feel, but this beer takes me back to my first ipa experience and caresses me at all the turns it first took me on.

Overall- Great beer. If you're new to the ipa realm or a well travled ipa veteran, Stone IPA hits on all the qualities you want it to. Expect nothing but greatness from Stone!
