Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The IPA That Launched Generations of Hop Fanatics
First Release: August 1997

By definition, an India pale ale is hoppier and higher in alcohol than its little brother, pale aleā€”and we deliver in spades. Now one of the most well-respected and best-selling IPAs in the country, this golden beauty explodes with citrusy, piney hop flavors and aromas, all perfectly balanced by a subtle malt character. This crisp, extra hoppy brew is hugely refreshing on a hot day, but will always deliver no matter when you choose to drink it.

Appearance: Transparent gold with surprisingly thin white head. Appears very carbonated though, I've had a couple of sips and I still see a ton of bubbles heading to the surface.

Smell: What I'd expect for an IPA. Piney hops are very apparent, hint of grapefruit.

Taste: Pine, hops, grapefruit, makes for a light tart flavor with some bitterness. A lot of the super-bitter IPAs don't have much flavor but like that this is so dry but flavorful. Aftertaste is a bit different, definitely some residual bitterness and hops but also pick up some of the alcohol (in a good way).

Mouthfeel: Lot going on here. Very dry and the heavy carbonation makes this beer seem very light. Just pleasant to drink. You don't really notice the bitterness until after drinking, again leaves some lingering bitterness which helps reinforce the flavor.

Overall: Enjoyed this one. I usually like my IPAs a little sweeter but like what Stone did here. In my opinion a lot of the very bitter IPAs don't have much flavor, just dry dry dry, but this one is dry with impactful flavor. Think the mouthfeel is what I appreciated the most though, very light. Good summer IPA.

12oz bottle poured into a perfect pint. Enjoy by 11/30/13

A - Straw golden in color showing good clarity. White head dissipates rather quickly.
Some spotty lacing.

S - Nice oily dank hops. Strikes me as pine heavy, still citrusy as well. Layer of bisquit malt shows some balance.

T - Big piney hop flavors right away and throughout. Very little sign of malt. Bitterness shows up midway and only grows till the finish. Wow that gets bitter, hops are all sorts of oily and just crammed in there. Finish leaves a influx of hop flavor and alcohol.

M - Medium body, medium-light carbonation, bone dry.

O - Classic bitterness profile starting modestly and then just letting the flood gates go. More so than usual, very one sided beer which I am beginning to warm up to more. Aroma pops out but lacks some dimension, flavor is also the same story. That mouthfeel is perfect and should be emulated. A cornerstone of the American IPA style.
