Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The IPA That Launched Generations of Hop Fanatics
First Release: August 1997

By definition, an India pale ale is hoppier and higher in alcohol than its little brother, pale aleā€”and we deliver in spades. Now one of the most well-respected and best-selling IPAs in the country, this golden beauty explodes with citrusy, piney hop flavors and aromas, all perfectly balanced by a subtle malt character. This crisp, extra hoppy brew is hugely refreshing on a hot day, but will always deliver no matter when you choose to drink it.

Stone IPA is excellent and one of the best IPA's I've enjoyed. Since IPA's are rather new to me, I am still finding my sensory footing, so to speak, needed to adequately rate the astmo chart.
The bitterness is the best I've experienced in the Pale Ale beer quest. The mouth feel is nirvana and my tastbuds sing with thanks to this excellent entry. Well done and Bravo Stone Brewing!!

poured from a bottle into a large tulip glass...

I've had this from a can previously and found it to be an easy-to-drink IPA, not complex, but very well balanced and smooth with a lemony-citrus aftertaste.

tonight, I am comparing it with some other IPA's on tap at Whole Foods: Four Peaks Hop Knot, Ballast Point Sculpin IPA, Mother Road Lost Highway Black IPA, Dragoon IPA, and the standard for double IPA's Dogfish Head 90.

color and appearance are a lovely dark yellow, almost amber with a head that settles down to about 1/2" thick

smell is nice, very well hopped and sort of piney... not sure exactly what hops Stone uses for this brew, but it was given top marks in Consumer Reports' review of craft beers and it's easy to see (and tast and smell) why.

taste is more hops forward than any of the other IPA's I am drinking tonight

In my search for the perfect IPA, this one is definitely in the top 10!

12 oz bottle poured into an IPA glass. Drink by date of 10/30. Consumed on 9/27.

A - Golden orange in color. Poured little to no head which quickly dissipated. Light foam around edges were liquid touches glass and some light foam in center where carbonation reaches surface. Apparent carbonation. Clear/no cloudiness or sediment. Ornate lacing as liquid recedes.

S - Hints of peach, tangerine, and mango.

T - Complex bouquet of flavors includes pineapple, melon, honey, coconut, and papaya with a hoppy bitterness and slight peppery finish. Alcohol notes are readily apparent, but pleasant. Very light malt backbone.

M - Tingly on tongue initially and feels very light, but carbonation quickly releases, leaving a more full bodied texture. Some foaming in mouth.

A - All in all, a very good single IPA. Not going to make you take a step back, but a solid option.
