California, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The IPA That Launched Generations of Hop Fanatics
First Release: August 1997

By definition, an India pale ale is hoppier and higher in alcohol than its little brother, pale ale—and we deliver in spades. Now one of the most well-respected and best-selling IPAs in the country, this golden beauty explodes with citrusy, piney hop flavors and aromas, all perfectly balanced by a subtle malt character. This crisp, extra hoppy brew is hugely refreshing on a hot day, but will always deliver no matter when you choose to drink it.

Orange tinged golden color. Clear. Light carbonation visible. Pours with nice ivory head. Good retention. Beautiful medium thick lacing.

Citrusy smell, particularly orange zest. Certainly some pine here. Mild sweetness in background.

Big rush of hops up front, fades to tart grapefuit in the middle with strong, bitter, piney finish.

Mouthfeel is light without feeling insubstantial. Sits nicely on the tongue. Moderate carbonation. Very smooth beer.

This IPA isn't the most complex of its kind, but it's so eminently drinkable. Certainly one of my favorite go to beers of the summer. Always have wished that the flavors interacted more rather than hitting the palate in distinct phases. But certainly an IPA I recommend for individuals wanting to tread in a more hoppy direction.

A - Yellow-orange, a little cloudy. I could care less about appearance, so unless it's really beautiful or really ugly, it will get the average of the other ratings. Who drinks a beer for appearance anyway?

S - Flowery, citrus, some pine. Dry hopping with high quality hops here.

T - Light malt profile that really lets the hops cut through. Plenty of fruit, citrus, and pine with good bitterness, but not overpowering, very light and clean for such a heavily hopped beer.

M - Smooth and dry, very balanced.

O - This is the standard by which I measure all IPAs, and since I can get it for $9.99 a six pack, it's a great deal too.

Poured a 12oz bottle into my OMB tulip. Enjoy by 9-23-13 written on the neck.

A - Pours a clear, amber color with a slight haze. A small head vanishes quickly leaving a small touch of foam in the middle of the glass. Very light lacing holds on tightly.

S - Touch of pine with slight citrus undertones chiming in. Not too overwhelming. I actually expected some more punch from their flagship IPA.

T - Tastes much better than it smells. Perfect amount of hops for an IPA and malt backbone. I'm also picking up some grapefruit rind, ground black pepper and caramel. The alcohol at 7% is pretty masked.

M - Finishes pretty clean and is refreshingly light on the palate, which I don't typically experience with Stone beers. I love how easy this goes down.

O - Stone has created yet another excellent example of a "west coast" IPA. It's very drinkable and very true to the style. I wish I had another.
