A porter with hints of chocolate & coffee balanced by subtle smokiness
First Release: December 1996

When first released, our smoky version of a traditional English porter was ahead of its time. Today, it's a highly regarded staple among craft beer fans and our go-to food complement, pairing effortlessly with all kinds of cuisine, from peanut butter and banana sandwiches to braised pork belly and apple pie. This worldly libation is dark, smooth and complex, with chocolate and coffee flavors suffused with subtle smokiness from the addition of peat-smoked malt.

My first experience with Stone, and I'm not much of an over the top Northwwestern hop kind of guy, but I have to try it at least once with a chance to get hands on some...espcially this one as I love porters and smoke flavored beers.

Pours a rubied deep brown that is impressive in it's thick creamy foamed head of a light molases color, and it holds for a while. Smells of sweet malts, very light alcohol underneath, with hops smelling grassy and gentle in a british way, but also blended with that northwestern american hops aroma. A subtle dopple like sweetness in the aroma as well. This smells like a lot is going on in a good way, and it's already not what I was expecting. Expecting a hop bomb of an ultra smoky porter... Here goes...tastes mostly brown actually; the smoke it faint and in the finish. Charred malt peaks through past the smoke and there is only a little bit of that to add complexity but not offend. The taste is classic dark brown/light porter with a few twists to give it complexity. It's balanced in hops actually. More comprable to jinx than I expected! Mainly just a note darker and a tad less smoky. I can see this as a porter, but it seems to have a lot in common with a medium bodied brown ale apart from the color. I like both browns and porters, and so it was more of a surprise expecting a near-stout kind of porter. A tasty, english style, balanced-flavored brew! Mouthfeel is medium with not intrusive carbonation ,in a really good way; very solid, which contributes to being one of the most excellent, easy drinking, sessionable beers I've had in a long time, and the 22oz split with a friend went down far quicker and more easily than I imagined! Drink this!

Pours a dark brown with some red highlights, a thin tan head and no lacing. Smells of roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, a bit of smoke and some nuttiness. Taste follows the nose with additional notes of dark fruits and a nice hop presence. Expected far more smokiness, seems more like a porter. Medium bodied, light side of medium carbonation, smooth mouth feel.

From a bottle brewed 12/27/15. Dark brown color with a thin layer of brown head. Roasted malt and vanilla smell. Feels a little thin. Roasted malt and smoke with some hop bitterness on the finish. Great flavor, wish the feel was a little bit heavier.

From notes 4/2/12: Pours dark brown with a ruby highlight when held to the light. The pour produces a frothy, tan, short-lived head that receded to nothing and left no lacing. Aroma is dark roast, dark fruit, chocolate, a little cherry and smoke. Taste is the same with heavier dark malt notes and a nice nuttiness with minor hop hints in the finish and a lingering bitter aftertaste. The level of smoke is a little disappointing. The taste is well balanced. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy bodied with nice carbonation, smooth and very drinkable.

Not as smoke forward as I like but still an undeniably good beer. It's a bit more on the traditional porter side, with a nice hop bite, caramel sweetness and deep roasted nut aroma. There's a light kiss of smoke but it makes you work for it. Unfortunately, although a good beer, when reaching for a smoky fix I go for O'Fallon's smoked porter, Yazoo Sue, or Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Urbock.
