A porter with hints of chocolate & coffee balanced by subtle smokiness
First Release: December 1996

When first released, our smoky version of a traditional English porter was ahead of its time. Today, it's a highly regarded staple among craft beer fans and our go-to food complement, pairing effortlessly with all kinds of cuisine, from peanut butter and banana sandwiches to braised pork belly and apple pie. This worldly libation is dark, smooth and complex, with chocolate and coffee flavors suffused with subtle smokiness from the addition of peat-smoked malt.

A) Smooth aromatic pour with a deep mahogany color. Gentle carbonation with about 3mm of foam. I really enjoyed the dark color and soft carbonation, but I am partial to cask style porters.

S) A deep roasted aroma greets you as you approach the glass. The aroma is completely dominated by a deep malt aroma... while others could argue subtleties, I enjoyed the well balanced malty character of this beer's aroma. Not a trace of hops in the aroma.

T) Characteristic of Stone, this beer has an astonishingly complete flavor profile. This beer does not renege on its promise of a deep malt flavor. The aroma blends into the initial portion of the flavor perfectly and the malt persists through the entire experience. A slight hint of booziness greets you at the end of the mid-range, but for me this was a happy reminder. In my mind the thick flavor of a porter is well designed to mask a higher ABV than is afforded by less flavorful beers.

M) Smooth and refreshing, this beer was very easy to drink. Ideally, this beer would be a slight heavier... but I could be mistaken. This beer is easy to drink and has a very pleasant mouthfeel.

O) At $3.99, this is an excellent value. This beer is an exceptionally good porter and for the price... is awesome. My heart has been captured by Clown Feet's Lubrication, but given Stone's availability and price... this could easily be a close second. I will be buying this again.

Pours a dark brown with some red highlights, a thin tan head and no lacing. Smells of roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, a bit of smoke and some nuttiness. Taste follows the nose with additional notes of dark fruits and a nice hop presence. Expected far more smokiness, seems more like a porter. Medium bodied, light side of medium carbonation, smooth mouth feel.

From a bottle brewed 12/27/15. Dark brown color with a thin layer of brown head. Roasted malt and vanilla smell. Feels a little thin. Roasted malt and smoke with some hop bitterness on the finish. Great flavor, wish the feel was a little bit heavier.

From notes 4/2/12: Pours dark brown with a ruby highlight when held to the light. The pour produces a frothy, tan, short-lived head that receded to nothing and left no lacing. Aroma is dark roast, dark fruit, chocolate, a little cherry and smoke. Taste is the same with heavier dark malt notes and a nice nuttiness with minor hop hints in the finish and a lingering bitter aftertaste. The level of smoke is a little disappointing. The taste is well balanced. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy bodied with nice carbonation, smooth and very drinkable.

Not as smoke forward as I like but still an undeniably good beer. It's a bit more on the traditional porter side, with a nice hop bite, caramel sweetness and deep roasted nut aroma. There's a light kiss of smoke but it makes you work for it. Unfortunately, although a good beer, when reaching for a smoky fix I go for O'Fallon's smoked porter, Yazoo Sue, or Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Urbock.
