Notes / Commercial Description:
A porter with hints of chocolate & coffee balanced by subtle smokiness
First Release: December 1996

When first released, our smoky version of a traditional English porter was ahead of its time. Today, it's a highly regarded staple among craft beer fans and our go-to food complement, pairing effortlessly with all kinds of cuisine, from peanut butter and banana sandwiches to braised pork belly and apple pie. This worldly libation is dark, smooth and complex, with chocolate and coffee flavors suffused with subtle smokiness from the addition of peat-smoked malt.

The beer poured a deep brown with sone red shining through when held into the light. A tan bubbly head builds about one and a haf fingers high and leaves good lacing.
The smell is of roasted malts and chocolate.
Tasting the beer, I expected more smokiness out of this beer. Up front there was the roasted malts with coffee and chocolate coming out in the middle. The end was almost a little citrus hops.
A medium to light bodied porter which is nicely done, but could have been a little more smokier for my taste.

Poured from a 22-oz. bottle into a pint glass. Color was very dark, but more brown than black. Reddish looks in there, too. A bit more than an inch of head, that lasted for awhile. Nice coat of bubbly lacing on the top. Frosty tan film on the sides of the glass.

First smell was an almost even whiff of chocolate and coffee. On the second whiff, coffee seemed to be the overwhelming note. Caramel and toffee contributed to the nose.

Initial taste was dark chocolate, which seemed to be the middle marker of coffee and chocolate. Also some smoky, roasty malts. Nice and smooth.

Medium-to-full body. Slick texture. Soft-to-average carbonation. Long, smooth finish. Smokiness ruled the day here.

A decent beer overall, but I have to say the taste and feel let me down a bit.

i know this is older, so its at least 4-5 months old.

pours cola black. dark with a hint of light creeping through. lots of creamy head, lingers well.

sweet with lots of roasted flavor bursting out. faint hops in the back.

roasted through out, with a nice sweetness in the background to round it out. light smokey and citrus hoppy aftertaste.

mild to moderate carbonation. light easy body.

i hate smoked beers so i was hesitant to try this but this is really good, i will for sure buy this again. a great porter. very reminiscent to the english ones.

I am really new to drinking beer for taste. This is my first review, the reason is becasue this is simply one of the best beers that I have ever had. It poured almost pitch black into a pint glass. And left a nice one and half to two inch brown like lacey head.

I could definitely taste smoke (hickory). I can't wait to drink one of these again, but with a nice strong cigar next time.

On tap into a pint glass

A: Nearly jet black. Ruby tones. Respectable asn, foamy head. Excellent.

S: Bitter cocoa, smoke (fruitwood). Nice hrainy element (biscuit).

T: Somewhat underwhelming. Don't get me wrong, it is nice but a little lighter than expected. Smokiness is very light and offers an umami element. woodiness, cola spice, bitter.

M: A little too thin and dry for my taste. Okay.

D: Good. Would happily enjoy or offer to others.
