Odd year, oak smoked, with two years rest.
This pours a dark caramel color with thin foam.
There's a light char and a touch of toasted coconut under a bit of booze.the beer itself runs hot, with some smoke and an intense bitterness that remains, although the hops faded away.

P- Hazed darker almond amber, fine bubble head, leaves what its supposed to leave

S- light malts on the nose

T- Smooth and super flavorful. Light smoke, wood, caramel malts, whiskey come to mind.

M- Smooth is the word here. Lower carbonation , velvet on the tongue.

O- High quality sipper, that I enjoyed every sip of...

Picked one of these up at the COOP tonight for $6ish... clear deep amber brew with a long lasting tannish head... good lacing with a firm cap.

The nose is Old Guardian with a little bit of campfire thrown in.... caramel and lesser toasty malt with plenty of pungent hops with the smoke sorta complimenting the sweetness in the aroma.

The flavors mirror the nose with a more pervasive smokiness... standard big bitterness that lingers mid palate through the finish... caramel malts are also very present, a bit of nuttiness also shows up.

Thick and coating on the palate allows the finish to linger forever..

Not sure that I dig this one... I think the bitterness and heavy hop hand clash with the smoked malt.

On-tap 3/15/2013 at Track 84 in Warwick, RI, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a bright coppery red color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains caramelized malts, dark fruit, bourbon and some hops.

T: The taste starts out with a hearty malt character followed by mild flavors of dark fruit, caramel and bourbon. The hops presence is a bit subdued but brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, very strong kick, good representation of style, it’s a good beer but I prefer the regular versions because of the more pronounced hops bitterness.

22oz bottle poured into a tulip

The body pours a mahogany brown with a fluffy yellowish cap. The cap rose two fingers and then settled slowly, leaving some big clingy lace behind.

Notes of cherries, brown sugar, oak, toffee, and smoke greet you upon the initial dive. A little bit of molasses, peat, raisins, plums, and a touch of vanilla round out a complex and broad nose.

Toffee and cherries seem to lay the foundation with smoke and oak doing the heavy lifting. Vanilla, brown sugar, plums, molasses and raisins all poke through in the middle before leading to a oak and smoke infused toffee finish. Some fruity hops poke through and lend a little bitterness to the dry, oaky, smokey finish.

Medium body with good carbonation. Smooth.

This is as advertised, but doesn't necessarily wow me. A good beer across the board.

A fairly tasty, good smoked beer; that it's a barleywine implies more about malt usage and less of flavor. I'd take a German rauchbier over this any day for greater depth of flavor and easier drinkability, but this is not a bad beer, though only one I'd seek out again to share with friends.

Pours a 2cm head of light tan to dark beige foam, made up of small to medium-sized bubbles. Retention is excellent, lasting several minutes before falling to a thick ring around the glass and an island of foam atop the body of the beer. Lacing is excellent, the faded foam leaves a honeycomb-like pattern along all sides of the glass. Body is a deep caramel brown color, with light, bringing out amber-brown highlights and tones.

Aroma of caramel malts and smoked beechwood malt, slight Robitussin original cough syrup. Mostly of smoked malt, not leaving much complexity, but not bad either. Actually, when considering the amount of smoked malts that went into this beer, that this is not cloying or overly smoky is a sign of the brewers' skill.

Overall flavor is rich in caramel malt and smoky malt character, with medium-strong hop bitterness without much other hop flavor. Front of palate detects heavy caramel malt with slight campfire-like smokiness. Mid-palate notes smoky, sharp oak-smoked wheat, more campfire than smoked meat. Heavy caramel malt, moderate hop bitterness with little citrus flavor, mild ethanol. Back of palate picks up beechwood smoked malt giving a campfire taste, moderately bitter hops. Aftertaste is of lingering smoked malt, slightly spicy hops, more prominent ethanol, a bit of tanginess, and strong hop bitterness.

Beer is heavy-bodied, with medium-low levels of carbonation, leading to a smooth, somewhat placid mouthfeel. More carbonation could benefit this. Closes semi-dry with a flash of ethanol on throat and in nostrils. Heavy residual stickiness on palate and lips.

May 7th, 2015 - Stone's Old Guardian is already a burly beer, but smoking it makes for a potent potable. Dark and somber in the glass, the aroma is crazy intense, spiced with fine leather and cumin. The flavor is much the same, but with an overwhelming booziness. The hops tries to assert itself, but the maelstrom of ethanol is far too much to cope with, suggesting that the base recipe might be at maximum strength already. Any additional oomph is too much.

Bottled January 2013

Nice toasted amber with a central dome and ring of light tan foam. Smells of rich alcohol, malts, some oak, a good smoke and a little raisin. Flavor is smoke, oak, more oak than in the nose, sweet candied malts, some bitterness and burn. Medium bodied with a tight, higher than usual carb and a nice wet and dry finish. At first this beer was a little aggressive, it's much better as it warms. I like it.
