BEER INFO

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.70%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Jim Moorehouse, Nate Albrecht and Brad Zeller, three pals planning to open a Chicago brewpub under the moniker of Aleman, won first place at last year's Iron Brew homebrewing competition in the Windy City (judged by none other than Greg Koch, Jason Ebel of Two Brothers Brewing, and celebrated Chicago brewer, designer and author Randy Mosher). Their style-bending IPA artfully married the assertive tropical bite of Citra hops with amazing coffee flavor and aromatics to create something truly unique and exceptional.

Serendipitously, Two Brothers recently kicked off a new adventure roasting their own coffee beans, and provided just-in-time freshly roasted java for the brew. The result is an innovative IPA that's well balanced and intensely flavored thanks to the felicitous blend of hops and fresh roasted coffee.

A - Amber with good head retention

S - Very coffee forward. Dark roast. Hardly any IPA characteristics on the nose

T - Follows the smell. Not picking up a lot of IPA in this one. Again, mostly dark roast coffee biterness.

M - Dry finish. Decent carbonation.

O- Not the best Stone collaboration, but worthy of trying. I get all dark roast coffee out of this one. Would be good for an after dinner drink.

Bomber poured into my Gulden Draak snifter, appearance is clpoear bronze with an olive-tinged off-white head leaving foamy lace.

Smell is roasted beans with some herbal, grassy hops.

Taste is great, really nice low acid coffee, like a pour through. The citrus notes meld in a delicious vanilla like manner. A little graham cracker, decent bitterness. Pure hop flavor creeps out more strongly on the after taste, as well as a hint of chocolate.

Mouthfeel is dry, some creamy carbonation, medium light body.

Drinkability is very high for me. Bold west coast coffee and IPA are by far my favorite drinks, and this melds them gloriously. Loving this, although undeniably, the coffee slowed me down noticably compared to your average DIPA.

Poured into a snifter

A: Clear amber with a white half-finger head. Decent lacing.

S: Grainy hops. Coffee. A nice blend of the two.

T: Wow. Love this mix of light coffee and grassy hops. Coffee isn't overpowering as in some coffee flavored beers. Hops are smooth and not biting. A great blend.

M: Medium with smooth and creamy carbonation.

O: Highly recommended. Different, in a very good way.

A- A medium amber colored body with some highlights of gold and tan. Mostly transparent with a sticky off-white head.

S- Lots of roasted coffee grounds come through first, then there is a wave of juicy, tropical hop aroma. Lot really muddled either, both aromas come through nicely.

T- Really interesting combination of flavors here, but I expected that going in. Again, the coffee and the juicy hops both come through in a big way. Tons of roasty coffee grounds bouncing off of the juicy, hoppy flavors. I get a tiny bit more coffee than IIPA flavors, but the combination is seamless. Tasty, roasty after taste.

M- Medium carbonation, full flavor, very crisp and smooth like most Stone beers.

O- For such an unexpected combination, this one is done incredibly well. Great flavors come through and provide a great experience.

Pours copper with 2 fingers of cream colored head. Nice head retention & lacing

S: Coffee, biscuitty malt & grapefruit, plus pine

T: Coffee grinds, pine, grapefruit up front. Woody hops, dryness & more coffee as this warms, much grapefruit as well as this warms. Dry with much coffee & grapefruit in the finish

MF: Medium bodied, dry, subtle carbonation, good balance

Coffee IPA doesn't make me think"match made in heaven". This has a good flavor profile, but give me a coffee stout or a hop bomb, mixing them together doesn't float my boat all the way to the promised land. This is about as good as a coffee IPA is gonna get, no need to plow this field again:P
